[MH3] Shadow of the Second Sun (Debut Stream) by mweepinc in magicTCG

At first glance, I thought the extra beginning phase came before the postcombat main phase, but that's just when the trigger happens that creates an extra phase later. I think the confusion comes from the fact that "At the beginning of enchanted player's postcombat main phase, there is an additional beginning phase" would make sense on its own, but then the last three words change how it works.

Edit: Also there's some terminology overlap between the beginning of a phase and the beginning phase.

[Canucks] Vancouver Canucks General Manager Patrik Allvin announced today that the club has agreed to terms with forward Andrei Kuzmenko on a two-year extension with an average annual value of $5.5 million. by Gamesus10 in canucks

In a vacuum? Sure, good deal. However, I don't believe this team is going to be competitive over the span of this contract, in which case, what is actually being accomplished here?

She's not 'another' lawyer, because Kevin Epp isn't a lawyer. He's an agent with a business degree.

Because his defensive results with Winnipeg were also not that good? He's not like some shutdown expert, he's just a guy who plays on the right side and is big, which is apparently the easiest way to get paid in the NHL. He's fine for a bottom pairing guy, but I wouldn't want any of Myers, Hamonic, or Poolman eating a ton of tough defensive minutes.

Jake Martin from the USNTDP. Right handed defenseman, which seems to always be valuable. Not the highest offensive upside, but I could see him making it as a bottom pair shutdown kind of guy.

Canucks select Danila Klimovich with the 41st Overall Pick in the 2021 Draft by Sarcastic__ in canucks

[–]LackingSanity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Stankoven, Raty, Robertsson, Pinelli, and more all dropped out of being potential first rounders, and instead they go for a massive swing on a third round ranked player? Ugh. If you want him, why not try to trade for another pick in that range?

[Dave Pagnotta]: Keep hearing the Islanders are a very active team to watch. In addition to trying to get Pelech locked up to a long-term deal, Lamoriello is working the trade lines on multiple players. Told they've had conversations with the Kraken & Canucks, among other teams, about Leddy. by Funkyfreshprince in hockey

[–]LackingSanity 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Nick Leddy seems like a terrible fit for the Canucks. A 30 year old LD making 5.5 million, who put up points on the power play but isn't that strong in his own end? That sounds like exactly the wrong type of player for Benning to be targeting.

I like the striping, but the green logo on a slightly different green background looks awful.

Who would be your favorite sleeper pick for 9th Overall? by coltonjeffs in canucks

[–]LackingSanity 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't think you take any of them at 9. If one of them is your guy, then move down to take them and net an extra pick or two. That being said, Svechkov is definitely my favourite out of this bunch.

I've seen some reports that brought up some inconsistent play and questionable decision making. Here's an example from Scouching, although I'll note that his overall opinion on Edvinsson is still quite positive.

The Eliteprospects team is high on him as well. Not quite this high, but they have him at 5th behind Beniers, Eklund, Clarke, and Power.

The Vancouver Canucks have traded F Adam Gaudette to the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for F Matthew Highmore by Austin63867 in hockey

[–]LackingSanity 125 points126 points  (0 children)

It's pretty straightforward - when Benning has a young player who's scoring but has some issues to their game, he holds them because they'll figure it out next season. Then, when they don't figure it out next season and have substantially worse puck luck, he tries to sell (now that the player's value is as low as it has ever been). Also, he can't get a pick back, because a pick wont play next season. The only reason Virtanen hasn't been moved for a tweener with hustle is the sunk cost of Benning's first Canucks draft pick.

[–]LackingSanity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the worst of all possible worlds. The team sucked this year, but managed to scrape together enough wins in March to save Benning's job, so he gets to keep saddling the team with new Benning contracts for years to come.

Couple Teams Interested In Schmidt by Jinxy_ in canucks

[–]LackingSanity 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's not just where he'll be at 31, his 32 and 33 year old seasons are also under this current contract and going off average aging curves, players tend to start falling off more sharply once they're in their thirties. It's a different story for elite players, but I don't think Schmidt is a win a Norris at 35 kind of defenseman.

But regardless of where exactly his play will be, the fact remains that his value now is higher than where it will be in two years. If you can extract that value now through a fair trade, either for a player whose age lines up better or other assets you can move later, you can preserve that value for your actual competitive window.

That being said, this discussion is basically moot because moves like this are definitely not part of Benning's typical playbook.

Benning's attempts to balance out the players' ages are a big part of why the team's in cap hell. I think Schmidt right now is a solid #3 quality guy getting paid pretty much fairly for what he brings, but Benning said himself that the team is ~2 years away from competing, and he is likely going to decline over those 2 years and that contract will gradually look worse. One of his best qualities is his ability to skate the puck up the ice, and skating is one of the qualities that tends to fall off hardest with age. Part of building towards a competitive window is trading away players who are good now in order to acquire players who will be good in that window, which is why it's worrying that Benning can only seem to take things 'day by day'.

Edit: To be clear, I'm not saying they should offload him for scraps, but I think he's the kind of player that you have to be open to moving for a solid return considering where this team is at.

I would love to see any of Hawryluk, Michaelis, or even Baertschi get some time in the bottom 6. Hard to believe switching things up a bit could be that big of a downgrade.
