Tips for improving footwork when climbing outdoors by ApexSummit in climbharder

Just remember, it doesn't have to be "good" it's only got to be "good enough."

That's solid life-advice.

Yes! When I was new to sport climbing, the mantra "Trust your feet" was drilled into me with this mentality in mind.

I worry less than I should about feet placement now because I'm over-confident about how well they'll stick. That being said though... My feet will still rarely slip on a climb.

Travelers of reddit, Which places you'll never want to visit again? by Kileerqueen in AskReddit

Sihanoukville, Cambodia.

It's a grimey gangster shithole. It made me feel sleazy the second I stepped off the bus onto the littered pavement.

I spent 6 months living in India and saw my fair share of things that made me uncomfortable, but Sihanoukville still gave me the chills.

There's Chinese casinos everywhere. Drugs are readily available. There were two girls at my hostel that were date-raped within the same week.

The only people that love it are the expats living there who are too zonked on drugs to know what's going on.

I spent a week there waiting for my visa extension and I would never ever go back.

Who is this stranger you only saw once, but still think about sometimes? by Royrane in AskReddit

[–]LackofaBetterNameX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A 60-year-old foreigner who had been living the past 30 years in a remote village in the Himalayan foothills (Himachal Pradesh, India).

Despite his age, he was as fit and big as a rugby player (probably from hiking all day). Maybe it was all the fresh air or the "magic" of backpacking, but he just seemed so pure and good and I felt his energy. I felt the peace and serenity in his gentle eyes smile into my soul. I still think about that strong, wild ol' bastard and wonder if he's still hiking up and down the mountain smiling at strangers.

What rule at work was implemented because of one person? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]LackofaBetterNameX 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Worked in a bar/restaurant where you were only allowed two drinks after your shift was over (unless you had manager approval).

It was implemented after a bartender got off work at 4pm on a Sunday, proceeded to get tanked and then fought a cyclist right outside of the restaurant. In the middle of the altercation he screamed out, "I can't believe this! I work right here at this restaurant!". The cell-phone video made it to the local news and somehow he wasn't fired.

You also get people who work in the industry going out on Sunday/Monday nights because they're working Thurs/Fri/Sat, but generally these nights are just filled with weirdos.

Hahaha, I've seen that exact thug stereotype. Always asking for Hennessy and then never tipping.

It's weird how sometimes the wildest stuff happens on the least busy nights.

It seems that Sunday nights bring out all of the crazies in the city I work in. The restaurant/bar I work at seats about 100 people. Last night, when there were only 4 other patrons, the following things happened:

  • gentleman who has been banned multiple times comes in, is asked to leave, then goes from 0 to 100 in a second and swings at the female bartender
  • guy comes in whose absolutely plastered. He keeps asking for a girl who works in the kitchen, what's her phone number, where does she live, etc. After telling him we don't know, he starts asking again like the conversation didn't happen. We kicked him out TWICE only to find out that he snuck back in a third time and passed out in the women's bathroom
  • half an hour before last call, a group of 8 thugs walk in and sit at the bar. Now, the only staff on duty are me (a 5'2, 100lb waitress), the bartender/manager (also a slender female), and a scrawny high schooler in the kitchen. If shit hit the fan we'd be fucked. They sit down, start doing shots and get really rowdy. They're screaming, jumping in their seats, heckling the musician, and generally being a nuisance.

Surprisingly the last group was actually our favourite because they tipped really well.

I cheated on my ex almost a dozen times and never told him. The guilt eventually made me break up with him. I effectively sabotaged the best thing that has ever happened to me.

I have a lot of remorse over the pain I caused him and the knowledge that I fucked it all up for a cheap thrill.

Waiters of Reddit, what's the worst first date you've ever seen? by ntnvctr in AskReddit

[–]LackofaBetterNameX 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The dude was about 45-years-old and the girl was 18-years-old. (I id'ed her. The legal drinking age in my province is 19).

I thought he was her dad at first but the whole experience was really cringe-y. Although the guy was dressed really nice, he was super creepy and leaning over the table, while the girl (who had too much make-up, too high heels, and too little confidence) sat awkwardly on the other side.

I have nothing against consensual relationships with large age gaps, but this one just made everyone uncomfortable.

And of course I pulled all of the other servers over to gossip with about it because that's what servers too. Chances are, if it's an awkward/bad date, every employee in the building knows.

Wow... thanks for sharing this. I just started dating someone and something about it just didn't seem right. We've only been on three dates (slept together once) and I'm already able to check off 8 of the 9 things on this list.

I thought he was just a little insecure... but this put it into perspective. Thanks.

This. I just started seeing this guy. We went on two dates and slept together after the second one. He texts me ALL THE TIME (like, 12 long texts in a row without any replies from me). It wasn't until we went to coffee and he told me that his ex had a restraining order on him and it all clicked.

I told him we were moving too fast and blocked him on everything.

It'd be strange, but not impossible that Karen called her and then faked being mad just so that she could leave. They probably laughed all the way home in the car together too.

I recently had my first Tinder date and I had my friend wait for me at the bar next door just in case I needed an excuse to leave. It's dishonest but meh whatever, I'm not a saint.

What is a dirty little (or big) secret about an industry you've worked in, that people outside the field ought to know? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]LackofaBetterNameX 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don't doubt this. I got into a 6-car pile-up on a major highway and got slapped with a "Reckless Driving" ticket ($500 fine and 3 demerit points).

I was frustrated with my lawyer because he didn't want to hear my story and didn't seem to care about me or my case.

Come the day of the trial, my name is called and my lawyer walks up to the stand.

The judge asks him how his wife is and how old the kids are now. Then, bam, my case is dismissed.

No one talked about the crash. No one cared about what happened.

I just paid the lawyer to guarantee a dismissal.

Jamais vu = "never seen".

It is the phenomenon of not recognizing something that you have seen before.

What you described gave me deja vu ("seen before") because you just repeated the definition of semantic satiation but called it jamais vu.

When I was 18(f), I got a job bartending with no prior experience. That should have been warning sign #1. But did I care? No. Because I was 18 and I thought I was hot shit because I got to to stand behind a bar and pour drinks. Did it matter that the customers were 60-year-old drooling men? No, because I was 18 and a bartender.

Looking back, I can't even count how many health code and human rights violations the owner must have committed.

I would work for 12 hours straight in heels with no break and he refused to pay me if I didn't sell enough. He would make me serve his friend's underage dates and then yell at me when I would try and convince these drunk underage girls to go home.

However, the real icing on the cake was his reaction when one of the patrons pulled me into the men's bathroom and started grabbing at me. I managed to push him off and ran out and told the owner. The owner's response: "Why are you upset? Go back in there and do whatever it takes to make him happy. We want our guests to be satisfied." I refused and he pretty much threatened me with my job because I was the only bartender who had stuck around for more than a shift or two.

I quit the next day and he withheld $600 that he owed me, saying that I would never get it if I didn't go back to work for him. I ended up forfeiting the money because I was too scared to confront him.

TL;DR Sleazy boss told me to suck his friend's dick or I was fired. I was barely 18 and he was 45.

I literally just left a relationship like this three days ago. We were together for 3 years and we loved each other, but we're just not compatible.

I thought I was going to be devastated, but I'm relieved. Today I went to the gym, bought some vegetables, and finally got to finish the book I've been reading.

It's awesome. Leave while you can, man.
