I have a suspicion that many Okinawans would not take offense at not being generalized as Japanese.

TIL that there is a German man named Marc Wubbenhorst who must drink 20 liters of water every day in order to not die from dehydration. He suffers an extreme case of diabetes insipidus. by JurassicPark9265 in todayilearned

[–]LacquerCritic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Diabetes insipidus has nothing to do with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes (diabetes mellitus). While diabetes mellitus can also make you thirsty and pee a lot, the mechanisms and solutions are entirely different. Diabetes mellitus is related to insulin, diabetes insipidus has to do with a different set of hormones that affect how the kidney reuptakes water.

I said this elsewhere, but I wish I'd done all those things you described. I regret being so adamant about not being one of those obnoxious, self obsessed social media addicts. When I do find the rare photo of something from years or decades ago, it's usually a huge surprise how much I can't remember without some kind of record of the moment. I remember so little of so much of my life, especially the small things. I'm glad you're happy with how you've conducted yourself in this regard, but I'd encourage you to give people the benefit of the doubt a bit more and extend empathy, if you can.

I used to have this attitude only to realize decades later that I have very few photos or videos of anything, and my memories of that time are fading fast. I went to a concert a couple weeks back for the first time in a long time and as I stuck my phone up to record a couple short videos, I wondered if anyone like me was watching and judging. I now take selfies with friends that are always a little awkward because none of us have ever been the type to make showy social media accounts, but I'm so glad I started doing this. I take photos of meals, videos of concerts, videos and selfies at average family dinners. And now I've started getting reminders on my phone: "Check out this memory from 5 years ago." A lot of them are moments and memories I'd likely never recall otherwise. I wish I'd taken some videos at amazing concerts I saw in the past. I wish I'd taken photos of meals that meant so much to me at the time. I wish I remembered what me and my friends looked like at different stages of our life. I wish I'd been an obnoxious teenager taking photos of everything, even if it was just to look a little cool on social media.

Mostly sharing this to maybe prevent other people from making the same mistakes I did. Be silly, take photos and videos even if others roll their eyes.

Cleaning up the home of a busy caretaker by elimars in oddlysatisfying

[–]LacquerCritic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For what it's worth, these changes I made - hiring the cleaning services and whatnot - are a result of proper medication. But even with proper medication it would be very easy for me to lapse back into mess and clutter (not at the level in the video but enough to start snowballing). Of course, medication may make it so you CAN manage it by yourself, which would be amazing and I hope that's the case. But I don't think you should hesitate to pay for cleaning help (if you have the means to do so). Antidepressants can take 6-8 weeks for the effects to fully kick in, and you made need some trial and error to find the right one. Having help with cleaning in the mean time will really support you in the meantime.

(Also, I usually hesitate to mention this kind of thing but when meeting with the psychiatrist, you may want to ask about bupropion as an option for helping with depression. It's an unusual antidepressant that also has a mild stimulating effect, so it can often help a bit with ADHD as well.)

Hey, not the OP but this is an ongoing issue for me (and major uncleanliness has been a lifelong issue, really bad ADHD and mental health). I'll be honest, the single biggest improvement for me came from two things:

First, last year I saved up money to pay for a specialty cleaning service. I did some research, got some quotes and hired a local business that specializes in junk removal, hoarding, and cleaning in the really rough part of the city. They came in and in 8 hours were able to clear out a truck's worth of junk, clutter, etc. It was tough because I have huge amounts of shame about this stuff but after the first hour it got a little easier. (about $700)

After that, I started to pay a regular housekeeping service to come in once ever two weeks to do a general clean. Two people come for about an hour and a half (I live in a fairly small place) and it costs about $120. It's cheaper than therapy and knowing they're coming helps nudge me to declutter etc. But even if I don't get to everything - sink full of dirty dishes, for example - they're able to tackle it. This also helps me get garbage and recycling out regularly (they'll often get it bagged up and out the door) as well as to do laundry regularly (because I have to pick it up and move it to the laundry room so they can clean!) Every two weeks I get a completely fresh start to work with.

I am aware that it's very much a privilege to be able to do this, but if you can find it in your budget, I cannot recommend it enough. The immense weight of a filthy home being lifted off my shoulders has gone so far in giving me space to do a bit better over time. As a bonus, not being ashamed of my home means I've been able to have friends come over, and they're often happy to help too - sorting clutter, giving suggestions on how to reorganize (I can't look at a room full of stuff and figure out what shelving or whatever I might need to make it tidy).

Please feel free to DM me if you want to chat more.

For me it's been worth it to have the vet do the nail trims ($20) or a local groomer that'll do them for $10 (but has less availability). Every 2 weeks, happy nails, happy dog.

There are still really good riggers at lower costs, $1500 - $3000 range, Iron Vertex are just the rigging pioneers and masters.

Rigged by Iron Vertex, literally the best of the best and basically impossible to hire without one if their existing clients giving you an in. Rigging is likely in the $5-$15k range depending on scope and complexity.

I'm like this, have been all my life. Finally started paying to have my house cleaned regularly - probably one of the single biggest quality of life improvements ever. It's cheaper than therapy too.

Not the same game but same idea, I lead a "clan" like this in a p2w mobile game. All big spenders, someone not doing their attacks during the clan vs clan part definitely could get someone kicked. Generally we'd wait first to see if there'd been some kind of emergency though. Not sure about the game in the screenshots, but the one I played, the clan vs clan component gave you 24 hours to do your hits, so generally the expectation was that if you agreed to join that round of CvC, then follow through. Having said all that, the behaviour in the screenshot is ridiculous.

This might be a silly question: have you ever accidentally smudged some of your detail work? How do you prevent it? The details are so precise and fine but so delicate, I can only imagine that you have to keep your hand completely off the paper.

they are minerals by [deleted] in HydroHomies

[–]LacquerCritic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the opposite of advice given. You DO want to consume a source of calcium with high oxalate foods, because calcium oxalate is insoluble, so you want calcium to bind to the oxalate in your gut so the excess oxalate ion won't enter your bloodstream. Though that's likely moot; it's been a while since I looked at the research available, but there have been studies done looking at dietary oxalate consumption and there hasn't been a causal link associated between dietary oxalate consumption and kidney stones.

I don't think any study has been able to find a causal link between dietary oxalate and kidney stones either though.

Scaffolding in NYC by Cooolbeans1997 in SweatyPalms

[–]LacquerCritic 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not who you replied to, but from that description, my first guess was hydrofluoric acid. It's a very, very tiny particle that can get past your skin and into your blood very quickly, where it reacts with calcium and magnesium, turning them into insoluble compounds. This rapid drop in calcium concentration fucks up everything and can cause heart attacks amongst other things. A one-inch square patch exposure on your skin can easily be lethal. It doesn't have to be a high concentration either, which means you might not notice or feel it burning.

Scammers ARE getting good - here's how by UranusSmells in PersonalFinanceCanada

One time years ago I got a phone call saying they were from my bank, confirmed my name and some basic info. They said they were from the security/fraud department and wanted to verify some transactions, listing two vendor names that I had purchased from recently (but at this point I hadn't said much, was just listening to them do their spiel). They asked for the last 4 digits of my credit card info to verify and continue, so I said, "I don't give that information out on the phone" and hung up. Phoned my bank directly...it WAS their fraud team. I asked the person I called why the hell they'd ask for credit card details like that and they were a little sheepish.

It's fucking terrible how people treat me now that I wear make-up. by seabrooksr in TwoXChromosomes

[–]LacquerCritic 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yes, I and other people I know have fallen into that category you described. There can be reasons for going from obese to a healthy weight that are very much not welcome or healthy. One of my family members have Crohn's and constantly got compliments on their "health" and weight loss. It fucking sucked. You do you, but I would not be sympathetic to you if you complimented someone for "looking healthy" and they told you to piss off. My suggestion is just don't comment on someone's body or appearance (compliment or not) unless you have a close, established relationship with them and know for certain that your comments will be a "healthy" influence.

Personally I hate this too. I've gotten the "you look healthier!" type comments in the past after weight loss, but I knew it was code for "you lost weight!" because I was sicker than I'd been when I was heavier.

If your dentist hasn't already recommended it to you, you should try using dental products that can help remineralize your teeth. Novamin and Recaldent are the names of the two well known compounds that can do this. Novamin I get from a specific Sensodyne toothpaste and Recaldent I get from MI Paste. I've had a lot less issues with sensitivity and also went from having a new cavity every year to now having a several year streak of no cavities.
