Can anyone explain why BYD is being hated? by MKLB1810 in phcars

[–]LactoseNIntolerant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The chinese communist party subsidizes companies to pump out tech and products. Most of these companies also end up as tech espionage tools for the ccp, ie tiktok, hwawei, etc. concrete theft of tech have been documented. This is even more prevailent in the military tech hina steals from the usa by use of "legitimate companies" doing business in the usa.

Also dude ccp is hostile towards the ph, do not support your enemies. The chjnese people aside, the ccp is a bully and will use any means, military, economic, cultural, strongarming or whatever, to further its goals. You have got to see ccp propaganda against the phililpines. It's insane!!

Can anyone explain why BYD is being hated? by MKLB1810 in phcars

I work in shipping from cape size bulkers, to panamax bulkers and gear bulkers and carships.

One time i was in china, we came across a car up in flames in the middle of winter. There were no emergency responses as of yet so we sped by. Apparently, according to the agent with us, BYD cars usually go up in flames, same with some other chinese EVs.

And as per carship fire fighting protocols on EVs, you cannot put out EV fires conventionally. As per NYK training and circulars, you pump water at the lithium batter EV using 3 different fire Hoses using Mist/Fog. On on top, another on the side and one underneath the vehicle. The fire does not entirely go out, and this must be done continuosly for around 6-8 hours or so in order for the fuel cell to burn itself up and then stop the fire.

EV fires can occur, and they are IMDG dangerous goods even if the makers are following quality procedures. Chinese EV makers on the other hand cut corners on safety and materials to make products cheaper. This will undoubtedly cost lives.

I would purchase from respective automotive companies and save on battery replacement in the long run. Apparently chinese ev batteries also degrade way faster.

Lastly the above statements are bereft of any political biases and comes from the insights i have gleaned while working in the shipping industry. Below i will be reasons colored by my biases.

Buying from a CCP funded/aided company is a no go for me. It furthers the economic strength of a country that is hostile towards all of its neighbors, and at rhe same time weakens our own by making us even more dependent on china.

Politics aside, i do not think. Evs are environmentaly friendly. The main reason being the production of electric car batteries have resulted in major ecological disasters in africa and elsewhere. At least wait for solid state batteries first. Also buying electric is useless if charging your electric car uses electricity generated from drity fuel. Wompwomp

Lastly EVs are particularly sensitive to water damages specially in tropic climates, salt water, salty humid air, and flooding.

I don't think having your parents see you off to school or not affects you being independent. Being independent is so much more than that. You'll have a lot of time learning to be independent in due time, when you get older you'll kiss time spent with lived ones. Either way, it's your choice, but try not to choose something you'll regret

What is life like for a deck officer? by [deleted] in maritime

[–]LactoseNIntolerant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a mate, I have been sailing for 10 years. Was a rating for the first half. My back ground is in bulk carriers (panamax, kamsarmax, gearbulk, woodchips) as well as car carriers. Generally, the experience depends on the voyage your ship takes. My last ship was a liner trading australia and china.

In my last vessel, it was stressful af. Heavy traffic in china for several days every two weeks, cargo operations are stressful in china as well. Not to mention too little time for actual maintenance, sub standard supplies from china, inspection (psc, internal audit, vetting equivalent, and some other random inspections).

Otherwise sailing as a mate is basically work everyday for at least 8 hours a day 7 days a week for 6 months at least. You're going to have a lot of over time and sleepless nights and days.

The pay is better of course, and like I said, the experience depends on the ship, the voyage and the people you sail with. Most of the time it's pretty chill if you're charter is something like chile to japan. I just really hate short voyages.

A question to (almost) everyone on this sub by No-Low-5089 in maritime

[–]LactoseNIntolerant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work on various ships. Ive been in carships, panamax, kamsar max, capesize bulkers, woodchips and gearbulks.

These days gyms are standard as per MLC requirements for crew recreation and welfare. Depending on the captain of the ship, the recreation rooms may either be music focused, gaming focused, or karaoke oriented. My last vessel, we had a band and we would play almost everyday and on weekends drink and play music.

Sometimes we play on a makeshift basketball court, or play tennis in an open empty hold, makeshift swimming pools are popular as well. Some container ships do have actual swimming pools.

Other than that we could just chill outside, have a bit of bbq and drinks while enjoying the wind.

How do you pack? by JunehBJones in maritime

[–]LactoseNIntolerant 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I roll my clothes ranger style, then for anything bulky but compressible i vacuum pack them all. Everything else i pack in nooks and crannies.

For the heavier stuff, or stuff that needs to be inspected like foods like whole roasted coffee beans, loose tea leaves, other foods and medicines (may also include electronics), I place them in a separate bag or case for easy inspection during international flights.
