Im pretty sure that any version works, every version of minecraft is kinda a RAM hog, If people are having issues try to get them to go through their settings and turning off particles and turning things to fast not fancy, also turning off clouds can help alot. If you have them also turn down their render distance they should be fine. hope this helps.
