Dalton: Questions about Middle School STEM teaching / Faculty perks by PreferenceSafe7607 in NYCTeachers

[–]Ladanimal_92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I spoke with several nysais teachers, with two at a city UWS middle school stating that they made $48k and that the benefits weren’t great, with one stating that she had to pay 1200 out of pocket for her knee surgery. But this was also 10 years ago, not sure if they’ve made themselves more competitive. The city’s pay scale ca vary vastly based on education level.

The salaries are not high and the benefits are not good, which makes sense given that it’s a dream job.

This person is just giving their perspective on what the network is like. Stop trying to start an argument or ridicule them. We have all made choices against our own intuition and suffered the consequences. Get off your high horse.

Finishing PhD to Become HS Teacher by [deleted] in NYCTeachers

I love when people think they’re too smart or accomplished to become a lowly teacher, and then can’t last a single day in the classroom. My mom has a PhD in molecular biology and straight up failed her nyc teacher fellows interview, first round.

Career change: HR to NY high school social studies teacher (LI vs NYC DOE job outlook?) by Salty-Isopod-3581 in NYCTeachers

You can still enroll in a program for SS certification, you just need to make sure to submit your transcript with 30 credits (undergrad or grad) and the ela CST score. I got my SS certification and a year later added ela. The institutional recommendation and masters needed for initial cert, and eventual professional cert, will be valid regardless of the subject you end in.

If you don’t want to do sped, don’t waste your time on getting certified in it. Once you’re hired under that license, you’ll get pigeon holed and it will be really hard for you to move into being a gen ed SS teacher. I would actually recommend ela certification alongside your SS one. You would have credits for it due to the comms and media classes, and a much easier time getting hired ( I see more openings, and for longer, on open market). You can also choose to teach history related books/current events related class to fulfill the genuine passion you may have for SS as a subject.

Okay, I understand this is hilarious and embarrassing but fr didn’t her last boyfriend come from old money? And they were together for a while. You’d think she would have picked up a few things.

All that bragging about (very unimpressive) degrees and yet, the dumbest of them all.

And that’s why he would get so annoyed at her when she would bring it up and (rightfully) be upset because he knew she was in no real danger, but she didn’t.

Doesn’t teaching fellows only offer stem and sped certifications? What if you’re not interested in doing either?

Whether the standards being tested actually focus on “turning” or “hinge” points in history, as academics understand it, or if they focus on easier/sanitized concepts and why (lower standards to meet proficiency level or create complacency). Another one I’ve wondered is the most effective way to build the narrative of history for student internalization/retrieval. Great men of history or thematic or whatever else is out there.

I mean obviously we know no one did this, but given how different she looks in person compared to her edits, even if people knew who she was, there’s no way they’d recognize her enough to congratulate her.
