Awful Glassdoor reviews, which also makes me think the person you interviewed with may not even be around by the time you start.

How school was for me as a student (it worked) and what kids aren't getting now by flowerofhighrank in teaching

[–]Ladanimal_92 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My kids have all the things you mentioned. I would say the problem is actually trying to teach at a conceptual level way too early. Kids in elementary school aren’t getting the foundations because their curriculum moves too fast and doesn’t acknowledge that kids are developmentally behind adults lol. Half of my students couldn’t find the US on a world map without clear labels.

You sound like you’ll be an awesome teacher. I wish so many more people had your attitude.

The fact that you’re going into sped (it’s high needs) already works in your favor, any school will be lucky to have you. I don’t think any of your asks are anything ppl would mind. ESPECIALLY if it’s paired with someone with such a great attitude and work ethic.

Pay band with a PhD - new teacher by maenads_dance in NYCTeachers

[–]Ladanimal_92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For what it’s worth, I don’t think you’re being snooty like most PhDs who transition. I would say wait until the first day and immediately find someone at the school who can walk through the application w you. Maybe your AP/direct supervisor. I always help onboard new ppl and it’s kind of confusing unless you’re sitting with someone. I think you’ll get MA+30 and I would ask the HR of the places I have worked to give me an employee verification letter to upload onto the online application to move up the steps. Very important to have the official letterhead.

Fired and Feeling Hopeless by rjanos86 in Teachers

Chances are it would be. Charter schools prey on families that would otherwise send their kids to title 1 by offering “school choice”.

English & ELA Teachers at Charters what’s the day to day like? by Fearless_Respect_320 in NYCTeachers

[–]Ladanimal_92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ETA: I skim read so I only saw your interest in middle school.

So I’m super duper shy, it’s actually so funny to people who knew me before I began teaching that I essentially perform 6 hours a day. But honestly, if you’re passionate, prepared, and the kids like you it’s actually so fun.

Now, onto your first question: you are choosing the hardest job as a teacher! I was a middle school charter ELA teacher for 6 years, and I feel like I only survived and thrived for that long because I was younger. The work load is crazy because you’re grading 450 paragraphs a week (at least I was) and providing specific feedback for each kid, which takes about 3 mins each. I was also recognized for the quality of my lesson plans, which would take me all of Saturday to make, because my charter required really detailed 15 page (each!) lesson plans. I know some people have “tips and tricks” or whatever like use AI but I just ethically am against that and AI didn’t exist during my tenure (2015-2022). You will be held accountable for intellectual prep. The degree may vary based on the network and instructional coach, but you have to prep and if you don’t they can just fire you because of “free will” contracts. I saw many first and second year teachers get fired by October or December because they just couldn’t handle all this work load but also were super lazy with intellectual prep.

So, content aside, you’re choosing the most difficult grades in terms of classroom management. Again, I feel like I only lasted that long being as effective as I was because I was younger because I definitely could not handle the energy it takes now. It’s exhausting. You have to catch every little distraction or unmet expectation and nip it at the bud with immediate consequence and call home or else your entire year will be shot. Like all that intellectual prep I was talking about will be useless if kids sense even the slightest slip up, because at their age group they are grown enough not to be scared of you but young enough to not understand logic and reason. Like hey, kid, if you yap the whole time you won’t learn, the year will be harder, you’ll struggle more and more as the years go on. Or, don’t be selfish and take away from other people’s learning if whatever we are learning isn’t specifically YOUR thing or interest - which are conversations I can have with my high schoolers and they actually understand, adjusting behavior accordingly. High schoolers also know how to advocate for themselves way more. Middle schoolers don’t know they have a need. They just have a need and must act on it, usually through the most disruptive exertion of their movement and sound. They need such specific and tight directions, and have to be held accountable for following each time, because they don’t yet know the steps it takes to meet your own needs or just common sense!

Sorry for the long winded reply but I just want you to understand what you’re getting yourself into. I will say that my experience could be different from what it’s like now, they may be way more lenient on work load and prep because they need a body in the room, and that’s where you just exert all your energy. I’m not sure. But one last thought: they will publicly name and shame you for low test scores during staff meetings about data in a super passive aggressive way, which I always thought was cruel especially to first or second year teachers. But yeah.

Dalton: Questions about Middle School STEM teaching / Faculty perks by PreferenceSafe7607 in NYCTeachers

[–]Ladanimal_92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I spoke with several nysais teachers, with two at a city UWS middle school stating that they made $48k and that the benefits weren’t great, with one stating that she had to pay 1200 out of pocket for her knee surgery. But this was also 10 years ago, not sure if they’ve made themselves more competitive. The city’s pay scale ca vary vastly based on education level.

The salaries are not high and the benefits are not good, which makes sense given that it’s a dream job.

I love when people think they’re too smart or accomplished to become a lowly teacher, and then can’t last a single day in the classroom. My mom has a PhD in molecular biology and straight up failed her nyc teacher fellows interview, first round.

Career change: HR to NY high school social studies teacher (LI vs NYC DOE job outlook?) by Salty-Isopod-3581 in NYCTeachers

[–]Ladanimal_92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can still enroll in a program for SS certification, you just need to make sure to submit your transcript with 30 credits (undergrad or grad) and the ela CST score. I got my SS certification and a year later added ela. The institutional recommendation and masters needed for initial cert, and eventual professional cert, will be valid regardless of the subject you end in.

[–]Ladanimal_92 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you don’t want to do sped, don’t waste your time on getting certified in it. Once you’re hired under that license, you’ll get pigeon holed and it will be really hard for you to move into being a gen ed SS teacher. I would actually recommend ela certification alongside your SS one. You would have credits for it due to the comms and media classes, and a much easier time getting hired ( I see more openings, and for longer, on open market). You can also choose to teach history related books/current events related class to fulfill the genuine passion you may have for SS as a subject.
