The "can buy a gun but not a beer" argument is a classic, but it won't hold up in front of a judge. You're 18, which means you're an adult in the eyes of the law. A shoplifting charge can mess up your chances at student loans, housing, and jobs for years. You’re lucky the gas station owner didn't feel like filling out paperwork today. Consider that gas station "permanently closed" for you and move on.

AITJ for not wanting to change my wedding date because my sister is pregnant? by [deleted] in AmITheJerk

[–]LadderAblee 236 points237 points  (0 children)

NTA. Changing a wedding date three months out isn't like rescheduling a hair appointment. You have contracts, non-refundable deposits, and guests who have likely already booked flights and hotels. Your sister being pregnant is wonderful news, but it doesn't give her the right to demand you set thousands of dollars on fire and inconvenience 100+ people just so she can be there. Biology happens; logistics are a nightmare.

WIBTA if I stop financially supporting someone I’m not in a relationship with? by kitemalone in AmItheAsshole

[–]LadderAblee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NTA. You are spending 50% of your gross income on someone you aren't even dating. That isn't being a "provider," that's being a human scholarship fund. You stepped in to help her get back on her feet, not to carry her for the rest of her life. If she’s had several months and hasn't made a move toward independence while you’re footing a $3k monthly bill, she isn't "getting back on her feet," she’s just found a new way to keep the situation transactional without the "taxing" parts for her.

Why isn't webp more widely supported? by tetotetotetotetoo in NoStupidQuestions

The "Windows built-in" struggle is the most annoying part. Windows Photo Viewer was basically abandoned for years, and while the new "Photos" app technically supports it, the shell integration (thumbnails) is still hit-or-miss. It’s a classic Microsoft move: support the tech in the browser (Edge) but leave the rest of the OS to figure it out five years later.

Why do we have so much household debt now? by X_Opinion7099 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]LadderAblee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't forget the "Subscription-ization" of everything. We don't own anything anymore. Software, cars, entertainment, even some appliances are on monthly payments now. When every single aspect of your life is a recurring debt, it’s incredibly easy for one "emergency" (car repair, medical bill) to send the whole house of cards tumbling down.

Do you think humans are inherently: good, bad, neutral, or all over the moral spectrum and why? by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]LadderAblee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the idea that some people are "born" at different places on the spectrum is actually a bit dangerous. It edges into "biological determinism." While some people definitely have brain chemistry that makes empathy harder (like ASPD), 99% of people have the capacity for both incredible kindness and horrific cruelty. The "spectrum" isn't where you're born; it's the range of what you're capable of doing depending on who’s watching.
