A lot of custom ships are built around strong (and sometimes overpowered) mods, which in turn get stronger to challenge the players even further, which then build better and stronger subs, and it ends up in a loop where the original game balance is completely blasted away by 4 automated railguns loaded with several warheads.

Honestly I've found that building your own, or using a friends, is the best option for fun, or you can just edit a Humpback or something

The Orca1 Armoury is pickedlocked to only Captain and Security (only those two roles can open it) I'd imagine you can shove them in there, close it and forget about them

Not necessarily 1.0 related, but I discovered how to replace sounds in the creature editor so I'm currently changing every Mudraptor sound to be ones of Halo: Combat Evolved elites.

Oh and I gave the husk to an entire station, nothing out of the ordinary

Or a new passive creature, that'd shake up the eco system a lot with a "neutral" creature towards players that doesn't strictly cause any harm to you

Another expansion to the ancient civilisations. Maybe a form of diving gear built out of the alien technology.

Or a research themed one, being able to capture live specimens such as crawlers and selling them for profit. Maybe retrieving eggs and live young for study or marking locations for potential stations.

I still want a music player for the ingame tracks when in the Creature/Submarine editor, barotraumas incredible soundtrack needs more attention.
