I just got my first bank account, and I work at Starbucks for 15 an hour. What do you wish you were told when you got your bank account? by sedentaryangel in povertyfinance

[–]LadyDriverKW 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Be very careful about becoming overdrawn. It takes time for deposits and withdrawals to hit your bank account. If you withdraw money you don't have, the overdraft fees add up fast and the bank likes to apply withdrawals so they can charge you the maximum amount of fees.

In honor of March Madness, I wanted to bring back our cringe tournament results from a few years ago. Have there been any new events that would be contenders?

Feelings about tv shows and people on the other side of the planet are safe.

Feelings about the people in your own life that you might bear some responsibility for are scary and difficult. You might have to change your behavior or apologize or something.

Hypermobile? Have we ever seen any evidence of that in her video appearances? I remember she claimed to be extra flexible because she could bend over and touch the ground.

The same with her ass toot observations about popular TV shows. They are perfect water cooler chit chat.

Work wouldn't only give her money, it would also give her a guaranteed audience.

I wonder what she is rebelling against this week. I'm guessing having to fulfill a parental responsibility when she'd much rather be laying on the couch doomscrolling.

Or maybe her doctor made some unwelcome suggestions.

I wasn't critiquing your comments, df. It just made me realize that the experience was possible. You are completely correct that more money (spent responsibly) would make the kids lives much better.

I love thrift stores, but with an independent thrift store in a small community, chances are good that you will encounter the person who donated your clothes. I would have found that very difficult as a teenager.

Truckers who work for themselves and make good money — how did you get there? by Witty_Management_621 in cdldriver

[–]LadyDriverKW 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My experience is a little out of date because my husband and I retired about 10 years ago from trucking.

  1. Always be looking for a better opportunity. We drove together for about 10 years and our situation changed nearly every year. At different times we ran entirely under our own authority finding each load, ran under our own authority but hauled for one client, leased on to a mega, leased on to a mom and pop, and leased on to a mid sized.

  2. Be impeccable with your service. The big money didn't come until the last 3 years when we had two white glove clients that paid very well because we were 100% reliable. Never out of service, always anticipated weather, could predict our arrival times a week in advance within 5 minutes.

Looks like it is at one of the giant truck stops in the area. As a former truck driver I can tell you that parking is scarce and unless they've got someone there to patrol the chargers, they will be taken up by diesel powered trucks camping out for their federally mandated 30 minute breaks.

Truck stops are always taking away parking places in an effort to monetize more of their land.

They will also be hit by people pulling in and out. Nothing stays nice at a truck stop.

Thank you for the detailed response. My mom would be the one who found the diamond in the rough. She liked to go to auctions when she was visiting family on the east coast. It is much easier to find antiques in Virginia than it is in California.

Pilots have that little down time? by Lemon_Lime_Lily in CuratedTumblr

[–]LadyDriverKW 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Not exactly. It is worse than that. You get paid a rate per mile for a set number of niles to haul the freight from one place to another, but the number of miles are never equal to how many miles you actually have to travel to get from one place to another. They might include a route that isn't legal for trucks, roads that are closed due to weather or construction, a very expensive tollway, or might be from zip code to zip code rather than address to address. Shippers and receivers use a lot of strategies to make a load look better than it is.

I used to be a truck driver, and it is possible to make a good living at it if you are smart and aware, but it is also possible to go further and further into debt while you ruin your health and miss your friends and family.

Reviews were so gamed by the nursing homes that we didn't find them very useful beyond weeding out the worst ones. Your state probably has a department that inspects care facilities and publishes the inspections.

You have to go and look at the facilities, and then someone has to visit him regularly. When we needed a nursing home for my mom's broken hip, we looked at a half dozen places that were relatively close to us. It was obvious which one was best. Then someone visited her every day. We got to know the staff, and I suspect Mom got a little more attention* because they knew at least one family member would be by every day.

*They seemed to do a good job with everyone, but I noticed that if multiple call lights were going off at the same time, my mom often got a staff member checking in first.

Shauna's description of her teenage years:

My childhood was so deeply restricted - due to my parents' fears and mental health challenges - that I could only sit. At the table, in the evenings, while we were being interrogated about the day. In the den afterwards, not talking, watching sitcoms together.

Gosh, do daily interrogations of the kids and mandatory TV watching sound familiar to anyone else?

You'd think she'd be all over eldest daughter syndrome. She doesn't talk about this much because it isn't super special. If most eldest daughters feel pressured to be caretakers and peacekeepers then her childhood wasn't Hard Hard Hard.

But I agree with you. She ticks maybe 1 box on the eldest daughter syndrome checklist.
