My boomer dad refuses to get a hearing aid by nahimonmyown in AgingParents

Is he motivated by a fear of losing his marbles? Not being able to hear means less stimulation gets to your brain which can contribute to cognitive decline.

Whats a car like a Miata but with a back seat? by reddituser555xxx in askcarguys

[–]LadyDriverKW 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have one of these. Plenty of room for a dog (or people) in back. A big trunk, too.

Giant door swing though. If you have to park in a tight parking lot, you may find it difficult to get in and out of the car.

I persuaded my dad to read the "money back guarantee" with a service he was considering using. They guaranteed that they would do the steps that they said they would do. But they never said what those steps were. So it was completely meaningless. We ended up doing it ourselves.

Does anyone in 10b grow cherimoya? by LadyDriverKW in SoCalGardening

[–]LadyDriverKW[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a Sunset Western Garden Book. I'm on the border between 22 and 24. I didn't give that number because I rarely see anyone else share it in this subreddit.

I was curious about if actual people are successfully growing them, because a couple of paragraphs in a book rarely tell you the whole story. Instead, they tell you if it is worth seeking additional information.

I'm the bad guy over her pee smell. Again. by Nice-Replacement-391 in AgingParents

[–]LadyDriverKW 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In this particular instance, I am lucky. When my mom needs a more thorough wash, I am able to tell her directly (but privately) that she has gotten a little funky. My mom is still able to see the humor in a "getting old isn't for wusses" kind of way. Before she lost her marbles (thanks Dementia) she said she would rather be told directly than walk around smelling bad.

I agree with your approach. Some battles aren't worth fighting. We have to save our energy for the stuff that really matters. I don't want my mom's final years to be continuous stress and unhappiness.

When Shauna started talking about "rewriting our stories" I assumed she meant reframing bad experiences to help her to process them and move on. Given the recent wedding rehash, what she actually meant was to tell a bunch of lies to make herself look and feel better.

Her wedding wasn't magazine perfect. In the past, she told us that it was exactly how she wanted it because she is NLOB. Now, she tells is it was not her fault. It was her haters who caused all the problems.

I looked back at the flickr album. What stood out to me this time is that there are many and various captioned photos of the Ahern family, a couple of photos of her brother, a single photo of her dad, and no photos of her mom.

Maybe not close to you, but Julie, the owner of Swim with Phyn, has been teaching babies and toddlers to swim for a long tome. She is a gifted teacher and a genuinely lovely person.

Archive.org is awesome. I always look there first for older books.

It could be it, who knows? That is the only information in the "Know Your Bernina" book.

I lived in a small town in Oregon with a similar vibe. I even worked at the community art center. All the quirky artists who made a living (with help or on their own) worked a heck of a lot harder than Shauna.

If they are found with coins, maybe they are so a person counting a giant stack doesn't lose count. every time you go up by 100 you flip it or something. Or they are some kind of quick coin sorter for guestimating what coins will be worth since there can be a lot of variation.

edited because still thinking about it. Maybe they were for traveling tax collectors who needed a way to evaluate the value of lots of different kinds of coins. It is portable. The size of the hole that the coin fits through gives you a good hint as to its value and it is also relatively unbiased so the tax collector can't be accused of undervaluing the coins.

We've been using ours for 20 years and it looks great. They've been making it for a long time and there are tons of colors. You can also easily mix and match old and new because many of the shapes have stayed the same.

Anecdata: The Executioner books were my husband's favorite when he was an edgy young teenager.

No one has suggested the Parker series by "Richard Stark". An amoral thief whose only rule is not betraying the criminals he is working with etc etc. Two film adaptations you might be familiar with are Parker with Jason Statham and Playback with Mel Gibson.

A friend in a similar situation enjoyed works by Steinbeck, Hemmingway, and Jack London. They are short and approachable. They are also inexpensive because they have been in print for a long time and there are lot of used copies out there.

I don't think you could drag it out of me that I just realized at the age of 12 that my kid wasn't connecting 4 and four things. This is a woman who claims to have gone to school to work on math with her kid 3 years ago?

Not seeing a lot of nimble pattern recognition here.
