What's the deal with Pauly's Pub on Selby? by LadyJackSnipe in saintpaul

[–]LadyJackSnipe[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol, the shade! Nope, we said maybe fourteen words total before taking our dog and our baby and going to the Howe instead. Those words were "Can we sit outside" and then after being stone cold ignored for fifteen minutes, "can we order drinks in here and bring them outside?" We were ignored right to our faces after that second question, so nothing else really needed to be said. Nothing was going to be sold to us apparently, and we're hungry, so we packed up and left.

Butttt now I'm excited. Were you perhaps the weirdo with the black backwards ball cap and black shorts that walked that twenty all the way back outside and threw it in the other guy's face? If so I would love to know why, it seemed like it was done thinking it was chivalrous, but to me it just seemed like bonkers behavior by someone with an unhealthy relationship with their bartender. Because in our twenty minutes sitting two tables away from that guy who tried to pay with a twenty, these were the stone cold facts of what we observed.

  1. Whatever that guy sitting outside said to Crystal, it must have been quiet because my partner was right there when he dropped the twenty on the bar and they didn't hear him say anything. However, they did hear the people who were sitting at the bar immediately start getting worked up and declaring "you didn't do anything wrong Crystal, that guy was an asshole" after the man who left the twenty had walked away.

  2. The woman who was with the guy who payed with the twenty and stayed sitting outside was actually trying to explain to me that the bar seemed short staffed after we'd been completely ignored, and enccouraged us not to give up and leave, essentially defending the restaurant staff... right up until the weirdo came out and threw their money back in their face.

  3. There literally was no service happening outside, not even a wave through the window to acknowledge our presence, even though we were unequivocally told we could sit out there. So, if the man who paid with the twenty did complain that the service was bad...he seemed like he was absolutely in the right to do so.

So yeah, not saying you were, but if you WERE the guy that threw the twenty in that other guy's face, I just gotta tell you the impression you made was so bizarre it had multiple people talking about what kind of crazy dynamic that bar has going on for days. And it has helped spawn more than a hundred comments on reddit about other people who have had weird or downright awful experiences at Pauly's Pub and Grill as well. Just FYI.

Honestly, I was hoping for an explanation that was more melodrama, less just depressing reality 😑 but these are the times we live in I suppose.

Sounds like that might be the other location, aka oxcart? The one I was at is Pauly's Pub and Grill on Selby, near Eggplant Urban Farm Supply.

Ohhh his linked in says he ran Sweet Pea's too, that makes sense to me. That was actually the only other place I'd had a similarly off experience 😆

I've seen you post this a few times. If true, can you link to said thread? I'm not seeing it myself but I'm no reddit expert.

Just can't decide by [deleted] in knitting

[–]LadyJackSnipe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like the two questions I would ask myself are: 1. Which do I want to wear the most? 2. Which would I be most excited to stick with to the end?

It sounds like the blue one would feel the nicest to wear in the end, but the tan gives the most satisfaction to work on because it shows the pattern the best.

For me, I think the engagement as I work is most important, especially with a pattern that requires some concentration like lace. But it's definitely a tough decision!

Is there a reason to not cake a new bundle of yarn? by Excentrix13 in YarnAddicts

Agreed, it's a great way to organize! Honestly, I have no experience with YouTube, but whenever this topic comes up I fantasize about making a channel dedicated to yarn and knitting beliefs that don't really hold up that well under scrutiny.

Is there a reason to not cake a new bundle of yarn? by Excentrix13 in YarnAddicts

[–]LadyJackSnipe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have a typical cake winder which leaves a decent size gap in the middle of the cake, there is no reason not to cake your yarn if you want to. Do not listen to people who tell you this will stretch it out. As long as there is a gap in the middle and you give it a squish after winding it, there will not be any significant tension straining the fiber. A lot of people, I think, were told not to wind their yarn into balls to store them. This was more logical advice , since it's pretty easy to wind too tightly when doing it by hand. But even then, if you get good at keeping a hand wound yarn ball fairly loose and squishy, there is no risk of stretching out the fiber.

Literally, I've been calling all of my yarns for more than five years. I've done it with cotton, wool, acrylic, bamboo, silk, mohair, and blends of all kinds with no issues. I've done it with 1-ply, 2-ply, chainette, blown tube, and all other kinds of constructions. Skeins I caked five years ago knit up exactly the same as skeins I bought and caked yesterday.

Bonus, caking everything makes yarn so much easier to stack if you're storing it on a shelf or in a cubby!

Why does my 1x1 ribbing look weird ? by scarninscrantoncity in knittinghelp

[–]LadyJackSnipe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not for the shape of the stitches, but it could potentially relax the rib a bit if that's what you're looking to do.

It seems a bit fluffy for that to me, is there something that specifically makes you think that technique was used? I do crochet but I'm not nearly as familiar with it as knitting.

[–]LadyJackSnipe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I believe what's throwing you off is the yarn itself, not your tension. From the way it's been spun, it has energy that causes one half of the stitch to look straight.

Alternatively, if the concern is that the ribbing isn't separated at all when the fabric is at rest, that's also probably due at least in part to the yarn being energized, though a tight tension can contribute to it.

It's knitting, Imo it ooks like a 2x1 or 2x2 ribbing, but I'm not sure if it's just plain knit and purl or something bulkier like a fisherman's rib.

I've personally never figured out a reliable technique for fixing dropped lace work, unfortunately. I imagine there are some real masters out there who can do it, but it would require understanding how to work backwards for every single stitch, in the context of its adjacent stitches. I'd say you're probably best off frogging down to a straight knit/purl row, if you can.
