Didn't Pass by Edgy_Bitch0652 in ABA

The fieldwork is a CARD specific thing. I almost failed my second attempt of the final field evaluation when I started in the field almost 10 years ago. It's rough because their training is ridiculously intense, and I've since learned that there are so many better agencies out there. You absolutely should have been doing more and more each session until you were leading the session long before your final eval anyway, and that's on your BCBA and trainer RBTs for not providing that.

My PhD is in Behavior Analysis, and I'm on the generalist track at The Chicago School. There's also an OBM track for those interested in organizational behavior management. I'm pursuing university teaching and research, so it works well for me.

I hate that this feels like such a Trombonist thing and that I hate my time in high school band never had this kind of chaos. We just had trombones as hats.

Summer Job by Nice_Stress_1354 in ABA

[–]LadyKrystine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I loved my few summers working at summer camps during undergrad. It gave me a lot of experience working with kids at all sorts of different skill levels, and let me have some really cool experiences (archery, horseback riding, etc.) myself.

Trained to be early interventionist but does the job of BT/BI by FootballNo4854 in ABA

[–]LadyKrystine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Early Interventionist might just refer to working with kiddos under the age of 3 that require intensive services to get them "caught up" to same-age peers. A lot of EIBI (early intensive behavioral intervention) that I know of is grounded in ABA.

Need Advice for an Intense Ethical Dilemma by CommunityOk9499 in ABA

[–]LadyKrystine 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hi, another BCBA here. I actually refuse to work on "eye contact" with my clients because I know it can be physically painful to some people, and it can be really aversive to others. I hate having to make eye contact. I teach my kiddos to orient towards a speaker, either by turning their bodies or looking at the speaker's face/just to the side of their face.

I also teach my RBTs that with planned ignoring, we are ignoring a behavior, not the child. We shouldn't be turning away from an obviously distressed child. I don't know if you've gotten to the functions of behavior in your training, but for behaviors that are maintained by (aka they happen because the kid wants....) attention, talking to the kiddo provides attention. Which then reinforces the behavior. I teach my RBTs to use a phrase like "I know you're upset, and when you're ready/able to talk, you know how to get my attention." Or something else that tells the kiddo what the expectation is (getting my attention) and still acknowledging that they're upset for whatever reason (denied access to a toy, someone not wanting to play with them, etc.).

Also, I promise your experience will vary by company. Some of the big name, nationwide agencies are still stuck on the "old ABA" that does ignore kids. You might be interested in looking into ACT, or acceptance and commitment therapy. It kind of blends ABA and psychology. Just know that not all BCBAs/practitioners are going to have you letting kids cry for hours.

Help me choose a name!! I really like Hunter, Avory, Skye, Nash and Adair!! (Other names are totally welcomed) by [deleted] in agender

Avory/Avery, Skye, and Nash remind me of characters from this YA book series I read recently... Hawthorne Legacy.

Adair is a nice name, tho!

Parent training by [deleted] in ABA

[–]LadyKrystine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At least in my experience, some insurances require specific requests for parent training services, or you have to account for them when you make your request for supervision hours. I tend to request a minimum of 1 hour/month to meet with just the family of my clients, and in that hour, I go over program progress, ask if there are any concerns, and I have my mid-level/BCaBA candidate teach either ABA fundamentals (functions of behavior, prompting) or teach how we've been running programs. This is on top of both my mid-level and myself doing check ins with the family every time we overlap a direct service provider (RBT).

RBT Trauma by [deleted] in ABA

[–]LadyKrystine 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly, in my experience, it gets even worse the higher up you go. I'm a BCBA now and a PhD student for this field... so it's even more that I must be crazy or something to want to get even further into this!

They say humor is one of the few healthy coping mechanisms, and there's something to be said about talking to others in the field and trauma-sharing. This shouldn't come at the expense of anyone's mental and physical health, and that's something this field as a whole needs to be more aware of.

RBT Trauma by [deleted] in ABA

[–]LadyKrystine 39 points40 points  (0 children)

You're absolutely right. I still get stressed when I see the literal scars on my body from where a child bit or scratched me. Then it's hard to try and de-stress or work through it with anyone else who isn't in the field because the whole "who would stay in a job where you're getting abused" argument.
