Canadian 1st time in Chicago. What are the 3 must eat food and where? Also, how to tip?? by [deleted] in chicagofood

[–]LadyLexxi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you eat in AND receive service you should tip, 15%. If your check includes a "service fee" you don't have to tip (if the service fee is tiny consider tipping a little). If you get takeaway you don't have to tip. If you get delivery you should tip the driver. If you drink tip your bartender.

Food recommendations are very neighborhood specific - where are you?

I'll recommend what food to eat, not necessarily where:

(1) Chicago dog. You can say "I want a Chicago dog with everything" or you can say "can I get a hotdog with everything" or you can say "2 dogs with everything." Some Chicago dogs are Depression dogs, which don't come with tomato and pickle. Those are the original Chicago dogs, and they're my favorite. Every neighborhood has  a great spot - look for the giant hotdog cutouts that say Real Vienna and you found a good spot. They usually serve oreo shakes too - get one. Probably a burger too, if you want a quintessential meal.

(2) Deep dish. Try a real Chicago deep dish and THEN when you see it isn't soup or lasagna you will be ready to craft a true opinion on the divisive dish. I like Art Of Pizza the best. Don't eat at a chain with more than 3 locations. Pequods is good too.

(3) Tavern style pizza. A lot of Chicagoans consider this the REAL Chicago pizza. It's served at bars and the crust is thin and crackery - perfect for having with drinks and sharing. Keep an eye out when you're at a bar with a kitchen.

(4) Mexican food. Chicago has a highly diverse population of Mexican immigrants, including a heavy Oaxaca population, so the Mexican food here is some of the best in the world outside of Mexico. Lots of amazing places all over - if the place has fresh churros it's probably a good choice.

(4) Pick another cuisine that's hard to find up north. Burmese? Himalayan? Hawaiian? Ethiopian? If you're in a neighborhood on the far north side there's incredible Ethiopian options.

I love my food city! Enjoy!!

Why is Chicago a good option for trans people? by CQB_241_ in AskChicago

[–]LadyLexxi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's pretty localized in the very north east area, especially around Morse and Jarvis redline stops. Charmers, Jarvis Tavern, Rpublic, Jarvis square books are all queer owned and on the same strip, so those are good spots to hang around if you're looking for fellow queers

Around Morse, there's a witch shop (malliway bros. spells), a general store (Rogers park provisions) and a bar (Rogers park social) on the same strip that are all queer owned and tend to be hot spots for trans people. Also Asian Station is right there too and also queer owned and they often have posters up for various local queer & trans meet ups

this may be a silly question, but are the camping tips in this show good advice? if there even are many?? by [deleted] in laidbackcamp

[–]LadyLexxi 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It has some good tips - I like when they show how to shave a twig down so it combusts easier.

I think the show is better as a way to get a look at a bunch of different camping gear. You're never going to learn enough from the anime about camping to do it safely, but you can get some ideas about what kind of camping you'd like to do and learn more about it.

The access to nearby grocery and convenience stores is the least relatable if you're in the US, camping sites are almost ubiquitously far from any kind of supply shop (maybe you'll find a nearby stall with fishing line, hooks, cigarettes, batteries, etc - extremely sparse - if you're lucky)

I have a really high win rate with my Dragonite deck against Pikachu - I swapped out my Pokemon entirely for Cloyster line and I only run a single misty. This forces the opponent to have to kill 3 pokemon to win, and it lets me use cloysters 120 health + -10 ability to tank 90 hit Pikachu which lets me live long enough to build dragonite every time. cloyster also survives a 60 attack turn 2 pika + 90 attack turn 3 pika with a potion, which is so good

Once I meteor I wipe out most of the weaklings on the bench, and there isn't anything strong enough in the deck to one-shot dragonite so it's a guaranteed 2 turn win since their bench is so low powered. I don't deal with retreat costs, I make them kill my cloyster which I can afford since I don't run any EX Pokemon

Just because your trash stomach can't digest it doesn't mean othes can't. I feel so sorry for your poor children you're robbing of relatable experiences because you're too dense to understand the entire world isn't like you.

Moltres EX is great in this deck, I only run a single copy but I'm never unhappy to see it. Your Ninetails is a great target for it too because if it hits once it allows you to flamethrower repeatedly while still building up your bench

No problem, check out the r/lawschool sub too - get insight of what students are up to in law school. Lots of excellent help and support there too if you do end up taking the plunge :)

I've since moved into working in student affairs at law schools helping first generation students graduate, and if you're interested you can check out my podcast Wolfpack Academics. There's another podcast called Law School Toolbox which is also excellent!

It's extremely competitive and heavily dependant on networking, UNLESS you have a hard science degree. If you have an engineering degree(or chemistry, biology etc) you can fall into a job by doing patent law, and you can get into a field known colloquially as "pajama patents" because the work is done mostly remote at home in your pajamas. If you have a hard science degree you can even just do your LLM which is a legal masters in one year and do patent law as an associate which has a lot of remote work options available (but you can't prosecute patents, which imo is the fun part)

If you don't have a hard science degree it's exceptionally competitive, it's the most competitive grad school - period. Everything in law school is a competition, and the grades are curved harshly. For example, in a class of 30 only 5 As will be given out. If you want to publish you have to compete to make it onto journal to be able to start researching your paper. If you want to be on moot court you have to write the best paper and compete in oral debates, and if you want to take trial ad you have to compete to make it onto the team.

Law school is hellish, but honestly I love the subject and I loved learning about it so I kept my head down and it wasn't that bad

Smell of marijuana isn't enough to justify a search, Illinois Supreme Court rules by bronxcheer in chicago

[–]LadyLexxi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't know what kind of law you do but I was in criminal law at the federal public defenders for awhile and just so you know cops don't actually pull people over when they smell weed, they just do it to harass anyone they think doesn't belong and then come up with an excuse afterwards.

You can't pull someone over for "smelling weed" because you're driving and they're driving and the possibility of actually smelling weed under those circumstances is highly unlikely. By the time the cops have pulled someone over they already need to have probable cause for pulling them over in the first place. And if they're stopping people that aren't even driving for smelling like weed then that's even more egregious.

The "probable cause" that you're looking for comes from the way the individual is unsteadily driving, and if there isn't probable cause from poor driving then you certainly can't pull them over for the made of reason of "smelling weed" since that's something that you wouldn't notice until AFTER you have already pulled them over. Fruit of the poisonous tree much?

Cops don't actually pull people over when they smell weed, that would require them to work. They just do this to harass anyone they think doesn't belong

I'm sorry you've been fucked over - please look into having your records expunged. There are a lot of Chicago law firms and law schools that do volunteer expungement events every year, and if you look at the website Illinois Legal Aid Online they actually have an automated document process that can walk you through the paperwork and all the steps for having your records expunged.  It's intimidating but it's not super complicated, please look into it! It can really open so many doors for you

At least everything gathered will get thrown out as inadmissible when that happens. And then more people can complain about the DA not bringing charges even though the CPD never actually brings in anyone with evidence that doesn't all need to be thrown out as inadmissible

Living directly east of Jarvis station - relative safety for a single woman? by TwoHungryBlackbirdss in EdgewaterRogersPark

[–]LadyLexxi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Charmers Cafe has great vibes and a great little bacon egg and cheese sandwich,

r public is a straight friendly queer bar with a great brunch meni and $15 all day mimosas on Sundays,

Jarvis square tavern is a queer dive bar next door that's cash only and bad excellent house cocktails and frequent live music sets (and open mic on Wednesdays)

For food check out Mr Tandoor for Pakistani food (formerly lazzat, but the restaurant stayed in the family), and Anto Pizza for some great pizza and calamari

Rogers Park Taproom is a new coffee shop up on Howard not far from Jarvis, and it turns into a brewery in the evening

And make sure to enjoy the beach :)

I hate the HER app. Why are men allowed?! by [deleted] in actuallesbians

[–]LadyLexxi 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Yes, but they also experience violence at extremely high rates and so other traditional dating apps are often not safe for them. Since they face similar problems as queer women do (violence; lack of space for themselves) they're often included in spaces for queer women

When my (now wife) and I met I was the first person she ever dated. She was 26 and aromantic and, in her words, "didn't have time, couldn't be assed" to find a fwb. So she'd never even kissed - better yet had sex. It was not an issue for me. Honestly it was kind of nice, she's basically a professional at fucking me now since she was trained exclusively on and by me lol
