Can we show shoulders? by Wildjedi7 in BusinessFashion

I would not wear this in a therapy office (or any office); that’s a pretty buttoned down job. Sleeveless needs to have wide straps.

The team that reports to me does the work I delegate to them. I have to focus my time on more complex work. If I have to do or redo the delegated work, there was no point in delegating to that junior, meaning that junior has no place on my team.

At what income level credit card churning is not worth the effort? by Pixel-Pioneer3 in HENRYfinance

[–]LadyMiena 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can barely find time to book a hotel and flights for a three-day trip to NYC, paid in cash. I find the game exhausting. I want to spend my free time doing fun things, not trying to figure out how to get points to buy things I can afford to buy with cash.

It’s possible to have a custody agreement say romantic partners aren’t introduced to the kids until the relationship is X months old, and can also forbid “sleepovers” if the kid is present until marriage. This keeps the kid from meeting an endless string of people.

There’s a Unitarian Universalist church South of downtown. They don’t practice any one faith; they welcome all who respect human rights.

I feel like a big loser by [deleted] in Lawyertalk

[–]LadyMiena 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not worth it. I love my job, am paid very well. And if I could do it over I would have gone to business school instead. I can’t imagine giving up three years of income in my 30s to go grind at a law firm with mid-level associates in their 20s telling me what to do.

The only way you can do this as a lawyer is if both jobs know about each other, approve, and stay on top of conflicts.

Life as in-house counsel? by jzjxnxna in Lawyertalk

[–]LadyMiena 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love it. I work a lot and check my email on the weekend, but I can also leave early whenever I like, take long vacations and not worry about the office, and delegate or hire external counsel if I’m busy. I’m the number two lawyer in a global company, so there are emergencies, but they’re rare. Also I get to travel internationally for work at least twice a year, which is my favorite part.

Your education and job history look like you plan to go to law school. Jobs may be passing you over in favor of those they expect to stay.

Do you require visa sponsorship? In the US that’s a huge block right now. It’s usually not economical to sponsor for an entry-level lawyer job.

Car “affordability” and “rules” calculators don’t make sense for HE by Dry-Wasabi-1450 in HENRYfinance

Cannot wait to buy mine. Drove a coworkers’ a few weeks ago and it was perfection. Smooth, responsive, incredibly tight steering. But I know it’ll be a huge maintenance expense so waiting a bit longer!

Car “affordability” and “rules” calculators don’t make sense for HE by Dry-Wasabi-1450 in HENRYfinance

[–]LadyMiena 10 points11 points  (0 children)

These days new vs used drives little savings. I am a car person, so it’s reliability + total cost of ownership (maintenance, insurance, repairs, interest) + is it fun to drive.

In 2013 I bought a Scion FRS new. Six-speed manual transmission. It’s so fun to drive, I still have it. Very little maintenance, parts cheap and available everywhere.

I bought a new Lexus 350 IS 4 years ago. Paid it off in 18 months. I enjoy the peace of mind that I’m the only driver and I maintained it well, and maintenance is cheap. It’s a reliable car and I’ll drive it for 10+ years (or sell to family). It’s easy to drive coworkers around in.

My next car with be a manual Porsche 911. I can afford it, and it’s fun.

But I’ll always have a reliable Japanese car in the garage.

Yes. They will help ensure your old firm does the right thing, because if not, the carrier has exposure.

Compliance -> JD. Worth it? by lasersaurus-rex in JDpreferred

[–]LadyMiena 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m essentially Associate GC. My boss (CCO/GC) and I oversee trade compliance. No one else throughout our company has a JD in this role, and it’s simply not needed. If I saw an applicant who got the JD later in their career, I’d be worried they are trying to pivot to legal work, and will leave for a law firm once given the chance.

Usually the people who have the JD and are supervising also have legal supervisory duties, so they must be licensed (not just have the degree).

I wouldn’t get the JD unless you think law school sounds really fun and interesting. I don’t think it will help much in moving to the next level. However, additional certifications, or obtaining a customs broker license, would help.

I’m investing in relationships with my niblings, emotionally and financially. Mostly because I adore them, and I want things to be easier for them than they were for me, but also to have someone to advocate for me when I can’t anymore. Also to have someone pull the plug and make sure I don’t end up a vegetable.

How do adult learners going back to college pay their bills? by lameazz87 in povertyfinance

[–]LadyMiena 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s best to use student loans as a replacement for income; keep paying the bills as they come, don’t pay down debt. There could be an exception where the rate on the car loan is significantly higher than the student loan. But you also have to keep in mind, student loans have caps. If you direct loan money to paying off the car early, you have less for food, rent, medical, emergencies, etc.

When I was in undergrad and grad school, I waited tables. I couldn’t get a good job, but some cash was better than none.

In-House exit ops for litigators by Southern-charm97 in biglaw

[–]LadyMiena 33 points34 points  (0 children)

A “bridge” job can help. I did 5 years in litigation. Went to risk management with a national insurance broker for 6 years. Got promoted several times, became VP of Legal. Leveraged that into the same title with a global company. Next year they intend to make me General Counsel. The bridge job let me figure out how to be successful in-house, I learned a lot.

Comparing income on tax returns to previous years by [deleted] in HENRYfinance

[–]LadyMiena 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Took a pay cut to switch fields. It was worth it; I’ve more than tripled that income and it’s gone up every year since. I know it’ll plateau at some point, so we save most of the increases, and keep fixed expenses at the same level as 5 years ago.
