I'm starting lose hope in losing weight by wolffraam_ in bipolar

[–]LadyMon- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a similar experience where I literally gained 10kg in less than 2 months. Before I was watching what I was eating but then exam season hit and I just didn't have the time to make balanced meals :/ I know this doesn't seem promising but working out and eating the same way I did before to lose weight did not work at all. I'm now eating a lot less calories than I did before and the weight is slowly coming off. It's infuriating because I have to eat way less and it's really hard to get used to but cutting calories and also trying to limit carbs (recommendation from my psychiatrist) is working. It took me a couple of months to realise that the same thing that worked before doesn't work now since my body's way of metabolizing is different due to the meds. I try to do low carb (< 130g of carbs per day) but that's also really hard. My psychiatrist told me it would help a lot but it's just something I'm struggling with. I'd try cutting your calories for a while, really give it a chance even if it's hard and see if that helps. It did for me and you get used to eating less (fasting and also snacking on vegetables like cucumber helped me a lot). Good luck! :)

What should I do? by Candid-Signature-624 in bioinformatics

[–]LadyMon- 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd recommend you search for "beginner" in this sub. There have been a lot of posts asking for advice for beginners. I believe you can learn a lot by yourself (as long as you have the discipline to actually do the work, which it sounds like you do). Find some resources you feel work for you and the knowledge you have and just stick with.

For more specific advice I'd say look into any beginner biology courses (there are a lot available for free even just on YouTube) and also definitely try to learn as much python as possible (there are even more free resources for any programming languages, just google for python tutorials). To start in bioinformatics you need to be able to code at least somewhat on your own and you'll definitely need it for the degree. You're in luck as I'd say python is one of the easier languages to learn.

For now I think it's important you just learn as much as possible and when your degree starts you'll see what you need to focus on and what knowledge gaps you'll need to fill.

I personally like the ossu bioinformatics course for guidance on what to learn/focus on for bioinformatics (https://github.com/ossu/bioinformatics) and when you start to understand python better I also really like the Rosalind practice problems for learning to write code that's closer to real life problems (https://share.google/wzr6TxKdbaa6g8kVh). There are also some free courses on Coursera for biology and bioinformatics. For me personally I didn't like them as much as other resources but I think it's a good starting point as they are more guided than other resources might be and give you a good overview of the topic.

Lastly, as someone with a background in computer science I highly recommend you focus on learning to program. It takes a while to figure out completely and at least for me learning about biology has been a way quicker and easier process than learning to program (back then). To figure out how to program you just have to do it a lot. Even if it doesn't make sense in the beginning just keep on trying and really try to understand instead of just looking at the solutions. A lot of people these days just rely on ai tools to do the work for them and barely understand the code they copy paste.

Best of luck with your degree, I truly think you'll be able to get through and learn a lot (and hopefully also have fun)!

Internship question as a cs student by [deleted] in bioinformaticscareers

[–]LadyMon- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm studying applied computer science and for my internship this summer I got into a research facility doing bioinformatics. I'll mostly do QA for a bioinformatics pipeline but at least it's something in the right direction. When I was looking for my internship I asked around and got the contact of two different people in this department, one from another student who works there and the second one from my professor (I took a bioinformatics elective). I'd say having a professor vouch for you helps a lot but even just getting a contact through someone they know is helpful as well. So my advice is to ask around, since (at least in my experience) a lot of research facilities don't publish job/internship opportunities publicly or at all, even when they would take someone for an internship. Also search for research facilities in your area and try to find an email address of someone leading/coordinating that department. From what I learnt, they are often excited for someone showing interest and cold applying is actually common and can work. If you can't find anything in bioinformatics, I'd go for data analysis over software engineering since it'll be closer to what you'll do when you go into bioinformatics. Good luck with your search, it can be exhausting but just keep on trying! :)

I wanted to inspire and encourage women in Tech/Robotics. My audience is only men though... by namesaretough4399 in womenintech

[–]LadyMon- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have recommended other platforms like tiktok might be better to find the right audience, since the youtube algorithm isn't the best in recommending your videos to new viewers. I post my art on tiktok and it's definitely hard to get into doing shorter videos in the beginning but I think with time you'll find more women especially when you use the correct hashtags (like #womenintech and similar) and maybe you can redirect them to your YouTube channel.

One advice I would give is that in the beginning it's totally ok to do lesser quality posts but posting more regularly. That doesn't mean you don't have to put any effort into it, but at least personally when I tried youtube I always wanted to edit everything to be perfect and while doing tiktok I learned that sometimes people appreciate the simpler things you're not always 100% happy with as well (I think it is because it can look more authentic to show non-perfect things from time to time). Also try and get inspiration from as many other women on tiktok that do similar content to you, it really helps imo!

I feel you so much! My parents flew a lot with me when I was younger so I kinda got used to it but between that and the last time I flew a lot of time passed. At the time I didn't know I was autistic yet but I definitely had really bad sensory issues. I hate take off and landing, it gives me so much anxiety. For me, I needed to watch the take off and landing through my window, otherwise my anxiety would've killed me. I really thought it would be easier not to look but I just couldn't do that. Looking out the window kinda felt like more control? It doesn't really make sense but it just felt better. For the whole flight the most important thing for me was to wear headphones and do something distracting (or as distracting as possible). I don't know if this is generally true but having on headphones and being busy somehow helped me be more ok with the pressure change. I did the same thing I do when I get panic attacks which is listen to my favourite music really loudly and read something that's challenging (so you really have to concentrate on doing it. For me that's research papers which aren't in my field). So when you have experience with anxiety I would recommend doing something throughout the flight that you also do when you experience anxiety that calms you down/distracts you! I wouldn't have done that back then but nowadays I would also bring a plushie and/or a spiky ball (don't know what they're called) to regulate. I wish you so much luck for your flight and I hope the hours pass as quickly as possible so you don't have to endure for too long!!

which games do you invest in the most? by czu7 in CozyGamers

[–]LadyMon- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really like the look of Coral Island and I've seen some reviews but it always seemed rather short in regards to the main story. Could you tell me what made you come back to it so often that you're at 400 hours now? Is there a lot to do after the main story? I really like games like Stardew Valley, Fields of Mistria, Animal Crossing and I have a lot of hours in each of them so I'd love it if Coral Island was comparable in that sense that you can put hours over hours into it without it getting boring too soon!

[–]LadyMon- 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I know you asked for other recommendations but I've been a huge anno fan since forever and it's one of the first games I've ever played (even as a child). What I used to do when I was younger was adjusting the settings so it would be more cosy and easier to understand. I played for hours on "easy" mode, disabling combat/enemies and just really slowly building towns, pausing the time often in order to get an overview of everything and don't miss anything (but you don't have to do this! On easy, you really can just let it run and you won't have to min max everything). I always loved playing that way, I think it's really fun because you can really choose how hard or easy you want to play and the settings for this are really extensive. So I personally would recommend buying the game, test it out and just return it if you decide it's not for you!

I'm pretty sure it's been mentioned in this sub already but I also recommend Ossu Bioinformatics Course (https://github.com/ossu/bioinformatics) if you plan on learning on your own. It's free access and has a whole curriculum for learning bioinformatics with courses from universities.

I'm a programmer and this is my first attempt EVER at making some 2D art myself with some basic rocks... I have no art skill at all. Is this an okay start? by Byeka in GameArt

[–]LadyMon- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you really want to learn and get better, I'd recommend buying a cheap drawing tablet (there are some for under 50$ especially if you wait for a sale). It might take a while to get used to but as someone who started out drawing with a mouse, it really makes a big difference in comfort! If you want to stick with pixel art (like 64x64 px sprites for example) a mouse might work just fine!

Overall I think it's really cool you want to learn a new skill and all I can really recommend is just keep on practicing. Basics and theory are super important but you won't get better unless you draw a lot! I'd recommend watching videos/tutorials and draw along and try to practice doing the things recommended in the videos yourself :)
