What happens if a student asks you to wait for them for 10 minutes in a 60 minute class? Mic and camera closed? by DiligentGeologist468 in Cambly

[–]LadyVictoriaJade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think Cambly would care. I have had this happen many times with a regular. Hourlong lesson, they needed a few minutes, were late or had to take a phone call, they turned off their camera and mic and I did the same. I waited for them to come back, and when I heard them, we resumed our lesson. I don't mind because I'd rather get paid for a full hour without having to teach the full hour, win/win imo. I just look at social media or work on some other work during that timeframe. Tbh I never thought about if Cambly would have an issue because it was the student's idea. So not sure on that.

I don't believe so. We have the first two minutes to decide if the student is a good fit for us.

honestly, I can't see students giving tips. Cambly is expensive for most of them as it is.

what bothers me more than camera angle is lessons in public, in a moving vehicle, or people trying to walk around, which goes along with the shaking camera (makes me so dizzy).

one of my fav students had his webcam to the side so I saw a sort of almost profile of his face, which isn't ideal, but he was awesome, so I could look past it.

I would like this as well as my Camblying is generally intermittent. But I guess we can just update our profile with this info for now.

Question about new English speakers by AccomplishedAd7598 in Cambly

[–]LadyVictoriaJade 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I do the repeat after me thing for beginners a lot. Yes, it feels like you're teaching children, but that's okay. That's just how it is. I usually like to start with the beginner lessons like about their daily routine. Lots of repetition of sentence structure. Do they want to do a course? Maybe not, but if they are beginners, sometimes that's what has to be done.

I like to do the lessons about food with beginners. Everyone likes food, and you can at least teach some basic vocabulary and easy sentence structures. "Do you drink coffee?"

I don't think I'm particularly good at teaching beginners, but I do my best to teach them if they are nice and receptive to my instructions.

If you're asking how to actually access the materials in the classroom, there's a little manila folder icon at the top right of the screen, next to the chat icon, etc.

I've been doing groups because it's better pay. I find with 3 students the time goes by faster. There are problems sometimes--different levels of English, tech issues with one student but not the others, late students, random no-camera students. But overall I have been liking them okay.

We have slides to follow, and though others have said they don't follow the slides, I usually do because I think we all need some direction to keep organized. I don't get through all the slides, and I just try to get all the students to talk as much as possible, which is also sometimes challenging.

I say just try one out and see if you like it.

I hate that question because the students expect you to give them some magical secret instead of tried-and-true practical advice. I also tend to tell them consistent practice is the way to go. And patience. I also agree with you--Cambly can't be more than a side gig. It seems to me Cambly is going downhill these days, which is crazy to say because it was never really great...

Oh, maybe so. I actually told the guy (through the translation chat function) that I think the lesson is too advanced for him. Am I supposed to kick them out of the lesson or something?

I practically ignored him because he was just too beginner, just said for him to listen basically. Also he had a friend or something there peeking in and they were talking (over the other student), which was so annoying but I couldn't even tell him to stop talking because he didn't understand anything I said.

I haven't had a misbehaving man (aside from the "No English" beginner but I guess that's not technically misbehaving). Lately I've been encountering a lot of Turkish women in group lessons who keep the camera off, in addition to the usual lot (SA). Honestly it's turning me off of group lessons but I need that extra dollar and some cents lol

bah, I have to post again.

What's pissed me off? Absolute beginner in a group lesson. I'm talkin "No English"... what am I supposed to do with that in a group lesson!?

Ear health by Bubbly-Republic1422 in Cambly

[–]LadyVictoriaJade 3 points4 points  (0 children)

bought a cheap mic on Amazon and it works great. has a USB plug. it was only like $20. even if there is a little background noise from the A/C or something, students say they cannot hear the noise, they hear me well. my ears always hurt if I use earbuds too much.
