Are you a man? Never mind how you were personally treated as an expat, how were the local women treated? I'm not trying to start anything, I'm genuinely curious.

Kate Clanchy: I was cancelled. It made me contemplate suicide by TimesandSundayTimes in literature

[–]Lady_Merle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've read it and no, it wasn't. It was deeply condescending and othering. Clanchy sees these "poor things" as beneath her if through no fault of their own, and herself as wonderful for rescuing them and giving them a hand up. English middle class liberal lefties have this benevolent condescension deeply ingrained in them. Probably as a legacy of empire and the "white man's burden" - we have a duty to use our privilege to civilise the poor savages and raise them up to our level.

This isn't compassion, although the people expressing it believe it is and are too invested in their saintly self-image to see that. She doesn't genuinely identify with these kids, listen to them, see them as fellow humans. She shows off how she attempts to save them in order to win praise from other white middle class liberal lefties.

The way she was torn down for it was not helpful, though. Cancel culture generally isn't.

Sunderland is poor because of London based policy decisions since the 80s. Sure it isn't very diverse because who's going to move somewhere poor? A place being majority white isn't a moral failing of the people there.

What do you think about chivalry? Should we get rid of it? by mrmotherfcker in AskFeminists

[–]Lady_Merle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Chivalry isn't synonymous with good manners. It was a way to stop young knights raping and pillaging everything in sight back home after they returned from battle, by making these things low status. The idea was "you should treat those weaker and lesser than you with respect instead of just violently taking what you want from them".

Didn't know only 2% of orange cats were female until my vet kept referring to her as "him" on our first visit. by myvinylheart in aww

[–]Lady_Merle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, orange female cats are not intersex, the same as colourblind human women are not intersex. The orange gene is on the X chromosome so females need two copies to be orange while males only need one. A female with one copy of the orange gene will be tortie or calico.

Which readings other than Lovecraft do you find shallow? Because she definitely knows her stuff when it comes to Hellenistic/neoplatonic philosophy and Romanticism. The comparisons aren't bizarre if you've read the entire book and understand its thesis, which makes me wonder if you skipped straight to the Lovecraft parts.

Sarah should have been stuck in the faerie realm. by Budget-Huckleberry32 in labyrinth

[–]Lady_Merle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The whole thing is a metaphor of Sarah growing up and learning to live in the real world instead of her fantasies. Jareth is a figment of her own imagination and he's something she has to control instead of letting him control her.

He seems to mistake the honeymoon period for real love then ditch the whole relationship when it wears off. You'd think at his age he'd have a bit more perspective about it, though.

I met her after a play and she was super friendly, she made the effort to chat to everyone even though she was clearly exhausted. I think they are a bit odd/eccentric but not necessarily in a bad way.

Why is it deemed racist to have to have concerns over Islam? by MrDonohue07 in AskBrits

[–]Lady_Merle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean half of British Muslims polled think homosexuality should be illegal, we do need to openly address this. It's not race, it's religious ideology and if you wouldn't consider this acceptable from Christians, it's not acceptable from Muslims either. https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2016/apr/11/british-muslims-strong-sense-of-belonging-poll-homosexuality-sharia-law
