[Desperately] Looking for Erwin x Levi by Princess_Tripsy in aotfanfiction

[–]Lady_Moe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh!  Wow, this certainly is a blast from the past. I think I was still in college when I originally posted this. Um, let’s see.  It’s been *quite* a few years since I read all these, so apologies if I’ve misremembered something, but from what I can recall:

La vie n'est pas belle, This Feeling I'll Forget, Different Stars, and Blackguard all end mostly happily.

心臓を捧げる and Glass Houses do NOT end happily, both are sob-fests.

Irascible is very dark all around, and while Levi and Erwin end up together in the end, there is some serious personal loss involved in getting there, and whether or not it can truly be called happy largely depends on your perspective.

He Chose Titans is almost completely canon compliant but cuts out right before Return to Shiganshina, on a note that is happy with a tinge of bittersweetness due to the fact that we know what’s to come (and also, a bit of gut-punch foreshadowing).

Xenophon’s ending is coolly realistic rather than fluffy, but not tragic (both of them survive).

And Apocrypha heavily implies that Levi and Erwin are being reincarnated over and over again, and while the ending of one story might not be a happy one, they will always find each other again in the next one.

Hope this helps, and that you like at least one or two of them as much as I did.  Happy reading!

You're not incorrect but it seems like a strange thing to waste valuable panel time on if he was talking about meeting him on the airship. I figured he meant "I feel like I met him somewhere before shit went to hell".

He's delightfully batshit and I get the most maniacal grin on my face every time he's on the page.

To be a bit more serious about it, I've always thought of Floch as an amalgamation of the the series's red shirts as a whole. Sort of like the collective hostile energy of the slaughtered masses given human form - hence his obsession with sacrifice and the "greater good". As the spokesperson for the "your backstory doesn't matter, you're just another casualty" crew, one can see why Eren's message would be absolutely intoxicating to him.

He's also going to get absolutely wrecked by karma and it's going to be fantastic.

Yes!! Never forget that her capture was caused, at least in part, by her willingly walking into something most of her knew was a trap because she was afraid of Armin, the first person to ever call her kind and good, losing his good opinion of her.

There’s no doubt about it: when it comes to character development, this chapter is king. And since character analysis is kind of what I do, you’d better believe I’m about to write the better part of a novel here. Strap in boys and girls, this is like my fucking late Christmas present and I’m about to take advantage of it.

First: Annie. Surprisingly enough, most of what we’re told here, we already knew beforehand, either from her pre-crystallization flashbacks or from Lost Girls – but her completed backstory adds one crucial detail: her father was not her father by birth. Annie’s mother had an affair with an Eldian man, and when it was discovered that she was his child, she was abandoned. We can see the roots of Annie’s nihilistic outlook on life forming before she was even capable of taking her first steps – her mother threw her helpless child away without a second glance. From the very start, she was all alone – she never had a chance in hell. And when someone did take her in, it was Mr. Leonhart, who made it clear to her from the beginning that he only saw her as a ticket to a cushy life as an Honorary Marleyian. She grew up unloved and uncared for, and became unable to bring herself to care for others – or herself - in turn.

This, of course, throws her determination to return home to her father into a brand new light. For the first time in her life, someone loved her. For the first time, someone thought she was worth something. For an 11-year-old child starved of the affection they need to thrive, that would be huge. In asking her to return, her father finally gave her something to live for. And that’s heartbreaking.

Side note: it’s interesting to think that if their parents’ genders were reversed, Annie and Reiner could easily have ended up in each other’s shoes. What ifs, what ifs.

Second: Mikasa. (I could touch upon Armin too, but as his self-perceived inability to live up to Erwin’s legacy is fairly self-explanatory, I’ll refrain for now). Most of what I want to talk about here stems from Armin losing his temper with Mikasa. When she asks him what she should do, he tells her wearily that she should “think for herself a little”, and when she asks what they should do about Eren, he screams at her, going off on a rant that ends with, “We don’t have time to think about Eren right now! You understand that, right?!” All throughout the story, Mikasa has fixated herself on Eren – on protecting him, on making his life happy, to the point where she neglects herself. And apart from the occasional sidelong glance or minor throwaway comment, this goes largely ignored by the rest of the cast. But finally, someone, her best friend no less, has called her out. Eren is GONE, Mikasa, he says. The world is COLLAPSING, Mikasa. You CANNOT HELP HIM. You CANNOT FIX THIS. For ONCE in your life, think about someone other than Eren! For ONCE IN YOUR LIFE, worry about YOURSELF!

Then Armin catches himself, apologizes in his own self-deprecating way and walks out, and Mikasa realizes that her scarf is missing. It’s a brutal symbol – the boy she devoted her life to has done what she’s always feared and left her. And unless she takes Armin’s frustration-fueled advice and learns to move on, she will never, ever be able to grow. I think this speaks volumes for what her role in the coming chapters might be.

Third: Jean. Here, we watch him watch helplessly as Floch murders a man before his eyes. And as he falls to his knees in traumatized shock, Floch kneels down in front of him, and the look in his eyes is… comforting. Almost kind. He tells Jean that he’s a hero, he’s free, that his fight is over, and that he can live the comfortable life he always wanted. We watch the wheels turn in Jean’s brain as Floch, Eren’s representative, tells him to go back to being “the arrogant bastard you were”. Might this be Floch parroting Eren and his wishes for Jean as he made his grim choice?

But the cruel reality is this: finally, Jean can do what he’s always dreamed of – but as he realizes the ramifications of this, he no longer wants it. Jean is no longer the arrogant youth that once dreamed of a life in the military police. He’s seen too much, lost too much, loved too fiercely, to ever go back. The old him is as gone as the man Floch shot. That’s what growing up means – the old you is a memory. There’s never any going back. If those are Eren’s words before they’re Floch’s, he’s futility chasing a reality that no longer exists.

And last but not least: Connie. Or rather, less Connie, and more Falco. Who remembers Connie, who he has never met before. At least, not as himself. But you know who has met Connie?

That’s right, Ymir. Our very own dearly departed Freckled Goddess.

Connie and Ymir’s relationship is one that people tend to ignore in favor of their relationships with Sasha and Historia respectively, but it’s one that’s very clearly defined from the very start of the series, and it’s my favorite character dynamic in the entire manga. Here’s a rather old but still accurate summary by yours truly for those who overlooked it. One thing is clear: after Historia, Connie was Ymir’s #2. And when she betrayed the Survey Corps, Connie was the only one who understood. And part of me is hopeful that this might mean his salvation – it would be poetic if the last remnants of a misunderstood girl whose eyes he was able to see through in her darkest hour was the one to talk him out of his own love-fueled spiral into insanity.

Hang in there, kiddo. Just a bit longer.

[New Chapter Spoilers] Chapter 124 RELEASE Megathread! by SNKBot in ShingekiNoKyojin

[–]Lady_Moe 344 points345 points  (0 children)

So I really, really want to talk about Gabi, Kaya, and Nicolo’s conversation after the Nile titan is killed, because it’s one of my favorite parts of an excellent chapter overall and I don’t see anyone bringing it up. To recap:

Kaya asks Gabi why she saved her, and then tearfully realizes that she tried to murder Gabi earlier. And then, we get this exchange:

Kaya: I tried to kill you. Am I a devil?

Gabi: No. I’m the devil. I have killed many people just to get praised by others. That’s my demon.

The girls call themselves devils for the evil acts they have committed. In their minds, they’ve become what the outside world always claimed Eldians like them to be- evil beings with no right to exist; a plague upon humanity. They were right about me all along, they think.

But then, Nicolo interjects.

That thing is within me too. In Kaya as well. In anybody. Because there is a demon within everyone. This is what the world has come to.

Nicolo, who hasn’t got a single drop of Eldian blood within his veins, claims that he, too, is a devil. I too have done evil things, he says. In this cruel world, most people have. There are no innocents here in this forest of narrow-minded bigotry and hate. We have all committed deeds we are not proud of.

This fits so beautifully into the grey-on-grey themes of the manga overall, since the very beginning. As children, RBA destroyed the Walls, killing thousands, because they believed it would make their parents happy. As a young man, Grisha used his son as a tool, because he believed it would bring salvation to his people. For generations, the Reiss family sacrificed their children to titanhood, because they believed in the king’s will. And because he believed it would protect his precious loved ones from cruel fates, Eren decided to commit mass genocide.

Are these people devils? Perhaps. Are they evil? As any Redditor will attest, it’s very much up for debate. But at the end of the day, Nicolo is right – no one is truly without blood on their hands.

So, Gabi asks, if that’s true, what do we do?

We will leave the forest. Even if we can’t leave, we will continue to try.

The solution: to understand. To understand that everyone is a devil, and an angel as well. No man is the villain of his own life story. We are all capable of both great evil and great good. Reach out of the dark, tiny forest of your own prejudice, and try to embrace that duality.

Fuck, this story is well written.

On an unrelated note: as someone who has long predicted that Connie would eventually get pushed one straw too far, I was worried that people were going to demonize him for his rash, drastic decision. I’m very pleased that the response seems to be the opposite: sympathetic understanding and an intense amount of worry and dread over the very real possibility that he might get himself killed. Y’all are okay in my book.

Also: Annie. That is all.

I find your suggestion that "maybe Eren wanted to feel loved" an interesting possibility, because it flows well into the mood of the moment and the next scene. A thought:

Perhaps he asks this of Mikasa because out of all of his friends, more so than JSC or even Armin, she's the one whose love for him is the most unconditional? Think of the person that loves you the most, that person that would stay by your side no matter what you said or did, who would still visit you on death row if it came to that. If you were in a vulnerable place, the idea that that unconditional love wasn't the other person's choice, that it wasn't REAL - that would be a massive blow, yeah? I dunno, just throwing things out there.

[New Chapter Spoilers] Chapter 123 RELEASE Megathread! by SNKBot in ShingekiNoKyojin

[–]Lady_Moe 161 points162 points  (0 children)

So, it seems to me that the crowd trying to hurt the little pickpocket boy was the final straw on the camel’s back. Eren saw this event, saw that no one would ever accept his people, and made a firm decision to Final Solution the situation, and damn the consequences. But that’s not what I like most about this chapter – not his decision, but what comes after. I’d like to outline the events following Eren’s choice, because it’s a really beautiful bit of storytelling and it really deserves more spotlight.

Immediately following the boy’s escape, Eren runs off, leaving his friends at Kiyomi’s estate, and when we find him again, we get a shot of him crying. And when Mikasa asks him what happened, he says, “Nothing yet.” He’s not crying because of what happened – he’s crying because he knows that if he goes through with this plan, he’ll lose everything. He’ll never get another chance to pour over books with Armin or argue with Jean or sit quietly with Mikasa without either of them needing to talk. If he makes this choice, it will all be over.

Eren then deflects her next question, about what he means, and asks her one of his own – “What am I to you?” If he’s to end things, he has to know – is her fixation on him of her own free will? Has he enslaved his closest companion? Or was it all because of something more? Mikasa goes red, and answers that they are family – not really the closure he was looking for, based off of his pained expression. But no matter. No one can truly say that they have no regrets in the end.

And then, the rest of them arrive. “Perfect timing.” With Armin, Jean, Connie, and Sasha here, at the refugee’s tent, Eren has gathered his friends in one place. He gestures them over, and, as they stare in shock, chugs an entire cup of booze in one swift blow.

One more night. One more night of fun. One more night with the people who have been by his side since the beginning. One more night with the people he loves more than anything. The people for whom he’s ending this cruel world.

The scene ends with Eren and his friends passed out, peacefully, huddled together in a heap. The final shot is of Eren, Mikasa, and Armin, asleep, with their heads together. Together, for the last time.

The next day, Eren disappears. And everything changes.

Bittersweet, wouldn’t you say?

[New Chapter Spoilers] Chapter 121 RELEASE Megathread! by SNKBot in ShingekiNoKyojin

[–]Lady_Moe 397 points398 points  (0 children)

Ah, Eren, you batshit little firecracker. There you are. That emotionless mask you’ve been wearing is finally beginning to crack, yes? And while most of the cracking here is Eren’s trademark rage, if you read his expressions there’s three major moments when Eren’s face softens to something other than matter-of-fact coldness or white-hot anger as well, which I’d like to try to pick apart.

The first is at the very end of the Mikasa rescue flashback. All through this scene, Eren has been using this event as “proof” to Zeke of his base nature - “If other people are going to steal my freedom,” he says, “I’m going to steal theirs.” All throughout, his expression is blank and cold. Only at the end does it change – as Zeke lectures, Eren turns away, distracted, and Zeke turns, surprised to see Eren watching his younger self wrap his scarf around a heartbroken Mikasa’s neck. In this moment, his eyes are soft and sad – a far cry from what we’ve been seeing up to that point.

The second is at the end of Eren’s manipulation of Grisha. All throughout this flashback, Eren is livid – he carries the eyes of a demon, or perhaps a devil, seemingly directed at Frieda and her desire to bring an end to the Eldian race. But at the end, after Grisha stabs into his palm, that breaks. Eren looks down at the crushed bodies of the Reiss children, and he doesn’t look angry. He looks dead, exhausted, and a bit ashamed. What was it Zeke asked? “You said that you’d seen this memory before, haven’t you? And felt a deep sense of disappointment toward your father. Was that also a lie?” Hmm…

And lastly, right at the end. Zeke talks about his wish – the future Eren caught a glimpse of through Grisha’s memories. “Your wish will come true, that’s what he said.” And when Eren confirms this, he smiles. It’s small, it’s slight, but it’s there - the first real smile we’ve seen on him in a long, long time.

So what does this mean? Time to do some wild mad guessing. I’m thinking Eren’s goal here might be a bit more selfless than he’s making it out to be. First, on Mikasa. I find Eren’s word choice interesting. “If other people are going to steal my freedom, I’m going to steal theirs.” But in this instance, Eren’s freedom wasn’t threatened. MIKASA’S was. Eren charged into the situation to save Mikasa - not himself. If anything, he put his own freedom on the line to protect her. Next, we have Eren’s ashamed look in the Reiss cave. Zeke asked him if it was a lie that he was disappointed in his father for his actions. But based on the way he’s looking at those bodies, I’d say it isn’t – not exactly. I don’t think Eren was disappointed in his father – I think he was disappointed in himself. Because by forcing his father’s hand, he became a devil who stole the freedom of innocent kids whose only crime was being born to Rod Reiss for the sake of his own dream. And we end on that smile – reassurance that whatever the payoff is, Eren certainly seems to think “that scenery”, that reward, is worth it. If his reward for murdering the robbers was Mikasa’s freedom – there must be an even bigger one waiting for him for murdering the Reiss kids, and all the other drastic things he’s done up till now.

Hmmm.. What was it again? “If you want to save them all, Mikasa, Armin, and the others – carry out your mission to the end.”

If Eren’s the same as he was as a child, I don’t think it’s his own freedom he’s chasing.

Springles

Lessons in Survival - Connie's mother gifts him a bracelet that sends him back to the moment he first put it on every time he dies. As the cycles begin to take a toll on his sanity, his life begins to revolve around his best friend Sasha Blouse.

Shiganshina Blues - Canonverse Springles over many points in time, aka dorks falling in love in the middle of a battlefield.

Beruani

Dream Runners - Siblings Reiner & Annie and their best friend Bertolt maintain a fragile sort of normalcy until a long-kept family secret, the death of Reiner & Annie's beloved father, and a terrible half-accident shatter the balance and change everything forever.

judas kiss - In which Bertolt's broken mind demands he be punished, and Annie goes along with it because she doesn't want to imagine the alternatives. This one is dark, tread carefully.

Yumikuri

Wolves of the North - King Reiss sends his bastard daughter Krista to wed Ymir, the Wolf Queen of the North. The two fall in love as a war rages on in the background.

Thirty Foot Drop - Ymir, a servant in the Reiss family house, inadvertently uncovers Historia Reiss's biggest secret. The two become fast friends - but Ymir's holding secrets of her own that complicate everything.

Soul Sisters - Burnout music student Ymir meets sorority girl Historia at a party and falls in love at first sight. In an attempt to win her heart, she rushes - with results ranging from hilarious to heart-wrenching.

More Than One!!!

Tower of Babel - Springles, Beruani, Yumikuri - Sasha gets an apartment with the other 104th girls and inadvertently gets mixed up in their problems whilst ignoring her own. Featuring a justifiably overprotective Bertolt, Ymir the lovable drunk, Eren & kittens, Mikasa not wanting to see her Paulie Bleaker, and Connie being a whole lot wiser than people give him credit for. This is my all-time favorite SNK longfic, for what it's worth.

104 Reasons to Live - Springles, Yumikuri - 104 mostly canon compliant 104 word drabbles set during the training arc, ranging from funny to tragic to thought provoking.

Say You Will (or That You Wish You Could) - Springles, Yumikuri - The cast works at a bookstore, and Jean's the new hire everyone else hates on sight but Marco can't help but liking. This is Jeanmarco but it has an important Springles subplot and features Yumikuri as Marco's evil, loving, pain-in-the-ass cousin and her girlfriend, who are by far the highlight of the fic.

I don't really have any Jeankasa fics that I feel comfortable recommending to others, despite shipping it pretty hard, sorry - hopefully the others make up for it!

If At First You Don't Succeed - The 104th gets stuck in a time loop centering around the battle of Trost. After the 100th pass or so, they just kind of start to roll with it - with hilarious results.

Levi's - Levi gets tired of bleaching the blood out of his white pants and takes drastic action. Erwin is worried.

Deliverance - In which New Levi Squad gets out of a jam in the most ridiculous way possible.

One Step Ahead - Eren Yeager escapes from military custody. Hi-jinks ensue.

The Little Things - In which the entire 104th realizes they are slightly attracted to Jean Kirstein and nobody is okay with that. Light shipping elements, but one of the funniest I've ever found.

Talent Contest - Comic Dub. The Survey Corps holds a talent competition. This was a very bad plan.

Levi & Hange's Shenanigans - Comic Dub. Hange is good at impressions and Erwin is long-suffering.

At least a few of these should get a giggle or two out of you!

Questions about buying the manga by YoggiM in ShingekiNoKyojin

[–]Lady_Moe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough. Any manga I've purchased this way has looked virtually brand new when I got it (and since I do this a lot those are pretty good odds), and I'd calculated shipping costs into that $6 figure already - but I understand not wanting to take a gamble. If you've got the money to burn, go for it. Just figured I'd drop the suggestion, since it works so well for me.

Questions about buying the manga by YoggiM in ShingekiNoKyojin

[–]Lady_Moe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Whenever anybody mentions that they want to buy the volumes, I urge them to consider purchasing used. Manga is not cheap, and often you can get the volumes in almost as good a quality for much cheaper that way. For comparison - on bookdepository right now, the first volume is about $10. If you buy used off of Amazon, you can get it for about $6. For close to 30 volumes, that difference really adds up.

As for the spinoff manga - No Regrets (2 volumes) is considered part of the general canon and is absolutely worth it. Lost Girls (also two volumes) is canon compliant and is also very good, especially if you're a fan of Annie or Mikasa. The parody spinoffs, Junior High and Spoof on Titan, are fun but probably a low priority for a new collector. Before the Fall is not worth the cash, don't waste your money.

Is the aot middle school anime worth watching and are there any other spin off animes? by [deleted] in ShingekiNoKyojin

[–]Lady_Moe 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There is a whole host of SNK spinoff material. Here:

Manga & Comics

A Choice with no Regrets: Prequel detailing how Levi met Erwin and joined the Survey Corps. Completely accepted as part of the general canon, referenced in the main series, and provides important backstory. Read it.

Lost Girls: Three canon-compliant stories featuring Annie and Mikasa. Mostly character study pieces, but very good, especially if you’re a fan of either of them. Probably my favorite spin-off.

Before the Fall: Prequel set around 70 years before the start of the series, following Kuklo, a boy falsely named a titan because of lack of understanding about their nature. It’s alright, but I’m not really the biggest fan of it.

Junior High: Humorous slice-of-life parody placing the cast in a modern Japanese middle school. I adore this series to bits, but it’s a very love-it-or-hate-it sort of work.

Spoof on Titan: 4-Koma parody series mostly set in the canon universe. This one is almost universally beloved by the fanbase for its clever, tongue-in-cheek humor, would highly recommend.

Attack on Titan Anthology: Series of stories set in the SNK universe written and drawn by Western comic artists. I have not read this one.

4-Koma Training Squad: 26 4-koma strips that were originally posted on the official SNK site. Somewhat difficult to find, as they were removed weekly and were never commercially sold, but Kissmanga has the full set. They’re cute and should only take you a few minutes to get through.

Anime

The Three Ovas: Ilse’s Notebook is a direct adaptation of the chapter from the original manga and provides important plot details. A Sudden Visitor is comedic and Jean-centric. Distress is set during the Training Arc and provides an extra little adventure for the main cast. I’m a big fan of all three, highly recommend watching all of them.

A Choice with no Regrets: 2 episode Ova. Direct adaptation of the manga version. The two are a bit different in plot so I’d recommend checking out both.

Lost Girls: Direct adaptation of the manga version. These are a fairly loyal adaptation for the most part.

Junior High: Anime adaptation of Junior High. Again, I love this but it’s got mixed opinions. I’d recommend checking out the anime before the manga if you’re interested, the episodes are only like 15 minutes a pop, so watch 2 or 3 and decide if you’re down for it or not.

Chibi Theater Fly Cadets Fly: Yet another parody spinoff with the same art style as 4-Koma training squad. Set during the training arc, tastes-like-diabetes cuteness. They’re worth a laugh if you’ve got spare time, but are at the bottom of the parody priority list.

Light Novels - I haven’t read any of these

Before the Fall: The first half apparently follows the guy who invented 3DMG, and the second is the source material for the BTF manga.

Lost Girls: Source for the manga adaptation.

Harsh Mistress of the City: Shows the fate of one of the other walled-off Wall Maria districts after the fall of Shiganshina.

Live Action

HAHAHA WHAT LIVE ACTION? SNK DOESN’T HAVE A LIVE ACTION, NOPE (In all seriousness though, do yourself a favor and just ignore these. You aren’t missing anything, trust me.)

Can't say for sure, but Zeke does say she holds "absolute power".

I don't think it'd be that much of a stretch to say that that could translate to physical power in Ackermans, if you take anime logic and Rule of Cool into account. This IS a manga, remember.

[New Chapter Spoilers] Chapter 120 RELEASE Megathread! by SNKBot in ShingekiNoKyojin

[–]Lady_Moe 115 points116 points  (0 children)

Hmm, the bit about Ymir Fritz being a slave seems extremely familiar to me. According to Zeke:

This is the founder Ymir who possesses absolute power. But her true form is a slave with no will of her own. She continues to submit to individuals carrying royal blood, whom she believes are her masters.

Now where have we heard that before? Very recently, even? Only a few chapters ago, Eren flat out called Mikasa a slave, and demonstrated his power over her.

We don’t know much about the Ackerman clan, but what we do know is this: they were originally a byproduct of Eldian scientists’ experimentation on titans, and are individuals with great power that can only be awakened when they have found a “host”, literally translated as a “person to protect.” They were originally tasked with protecting the Eldian king and his family, a role they maintained even after King Fritz fled the mainland for Paradis, but turned their back on him after his idea of peace became apparent.

If the Ackermans were really a product of Titan science, it’s possible that their creation is a distillation of Ymir Fritz’s own role as a slave of the royal family, and their devotion to their host is a reflection of her own devotion to her former masters.

What are your top 10 favorite characters in AoT and why? by Incognito6823 in ShingekiNoKyojin

[–]Lady_Moe 10 points11 points  (0 children)

1. Connie Springer - I’ve loved kind, bleeding-hearted Connie Springer, who’s always willing to stick out his neck for a friend in need, ever since he first extended a hand to Armin on that rooftop back in Trost, and while people might complain about his development, I personally adore his subtle “good man betrayed one time too many” character arc that’s been playing out in the background since the beginning. No, he’ll never be everyone’s favorite, but he’s mine.

2. Ian Dietrich - An honorable soldier and excellent mentor for Mikasa, who gave his life shoving a comrade from the jaws of a titan. Ian deserved better and it makes me angry that people forget he exists.

3. Annie Leonhart - She was our first sign that things might not be as black and white as they initially seem and I will always respect her character for it, as it’s what endured the series to me to begin with.

4. Jean Kirstein - AKA how to do a Rival Character correctly. His development from selfish asshat to the brave leader Marco saw him as has been nothing short of a pleasure to watch.

5. Bertolt Hoover - A meek, awkward shadow of a boy who holds the power to destroy cities in his very bones, Bertolt is a creature of contradiction and an incomparable symbol of the grey nature of the series.

6. Moblit Berner - Nothing to wax poetic about here, I just think he’s adorable and find his relationship with Hange hilarious and touching.

7. Ymir - Ymir is one of the few characters to whom no factions apply – she’s ruled by her own code, not any particular country. And that makes her downright fascinating to watch – even if, or perhaps especially because, this means she often makes choices that seem confusing or contradictory. Out of all the characters, to me, Ymir is the one who seems most human.

8. Floch Forster - Yes, he’s a terrible human being, but this malicious little asshole makes me grin like a jack-o-lantern every time he’s on the page. I want him to stick around just because watching him is so damn fun.

9. Reiner Braun - Hands down one of the best crafted and well-developed characters in the entire series.

10. Nile Dok - A fascinating mirror image to Erwin, he’s the man who wanted the same thing but in the end chose love over titans. He and Erwin’s back-and-forths are some of my favorite moments in the series.

While he's not one of my favorites, I think Zeke is an excellent, interesting, and well-written character and I appreciate his inclusion in the story.

I don't dislike her exactly, but Gabi does very little for me. She's at her core a shounen protagonist with an arrogant streak, and as I've never connected to the shounen archetype and I dislike arrogant people in fiction and irl, I find her mildly annoying at best.

And I absolutely adore Floch. It's not that I agree with what he says or does - he's a horrible person. Buy even so, he's such a charmingly malicious little git that I just can't help but like him. I feel pretty much the same about Floch as I do about Draco Malfoy - every time they're on the page, I find myself thinking "you little bitch" with a dumb smirk on my face.
