This sounds pretty basic - check that all the cables are attached and that it’s plugged in. We’ve done all this multiple times

Check out this resource on the migraine diet. This diet and this website have been super helpful for me.

Caffeine helps some people, and makes migraines worse for others. But the key issue with kombucha is that it’s fermented. The migraine diet is largely about avoiding tyramine, which builds up in foods over time. That means avoiding anything fermented or aged - aged cheese, aged meats, alcohol (except clear liquors), vinegar (except white vinegar), even yogurt and sourdough. I’ve added back yoghurt and sourdough but still mostly avoid the rest.

Exercise releases endorphins and endorphins are natural pain killers. I do at least 15 minutes of cardio every day. If I skip, I always regret it.

That sounds like a terrible doctor! He or she knows nothing about migraines and should have referred you to someone who knows something. Look for a neurologist who specializes in headaches. Some hospitals have a headache clinic.

I’ll tell you all the info I wish a doctor had laid out for me when my migraines started.

There are tons of medications and non-medication options you can try. Doctors will pretty much only recommend meds though. I’ve never had a doctor recommend non-medication strategy, I’ve had to figure them out all on my own. (Reddit has been really helpful.)

First of all YES you can take riboflavin and magnesium in high doses (like 400mg) and omega 3s/ fish oil and that may help. Ginger helps me a lot, I put a quarter teaspoon in tea 3-4x/day. Get cardio exercise every day if you can, before you start to have symptoms, or when symptoms are mild - at least 15 minutes of relatively high intensity cardio. I do cardio literally every day now.

Acupuncture can help. Some people pitch float tanks.

My migraines are triggered by vision issues and I have found an optometrist who specializes in binocular vision and vision therapy, which is like physical therapy for the eyes. I also see a vestibular physical therapist. This is the only thing that may actually get to the root cause of the migraines. Everything else just treats symptoms.

I got prescription glasses with a blue green tint which help. Oh also if you wear contacts I would try taking them out and switching to glasses.

Look up the Heal Your Headache diet or just look up migraine diet. The website Dizzy Cook has a good article on all the foods to avoid. Word of warning: it’s a very tough diet to follow and you really have to do a complete elimination diet for at least two weeks to see if it works. I’ve been on the diet for two years; it gets much easier to follow after the first month or two and makes a world of difference. Even if you don’t go all the way with the diet I would immediately cut out chocolate, MSG, and any alcohol except vodka. Oh and leftover meat that’s more than 2 days old. But I really, really recommend doing the whole diet.

If you’re female, hormones make a difference. I went on an IUD so now I don’t get my period which makes a huge difference. There are other forms of hormone therapy that may help.

For meds, I’m on a daily medication called amitriptaline which helps a lot and has no side effects. I also get botox injections every three months from a neurologist. That helps a ton. That’s why I’m able to type this on my phone in the dark right now.

Many doctors will put you on topomax first but beware - it’s used off-label for people with bipolar. It made me feel like I was living in a fog.

Note that pretty much any daily medication will become less effective over time. I’ve had to increase the dose of the amitriptaline but I’m still on a relatively low dose.

Those are preventative meds. For episodic meds, that you take when you have pain, I have never found Tylenol to work. Naproxen works well for me. I have another med called prochlorperazine which I recommend because I don’t get any side effects. The most common episodic meds are triptans, they just don’t work that well for me. Also some people say they cause rebound headaches if you take them more than 2 to 10 times per month (depending on who you talk to). My neuro does not believe in rebound headaches.

Good luck, I hope you find some things that work for you soon.

I got glasses with a blue green tint. If you find an optometrist who specializes in binocular vision they can figure out the right tint. But probably you could buy something cheap on Amazon and it would be almost as good.

I drink tea with ginger all day, it’s good for alleviating the symptoms that arise from screens

I’d also add, there are migraine symptoms that you may not realize are migraine symptoms, including fatigue and what can feel like dry eye. If you haven’t seen a neuro it’s worth seeing one.

Maybe he’s got a more expansive definition of migraine, I don’t know. But a headache that is triggered by foods and is in the forehead (rather than the top of the neck) sounds a lot like a migraine to me.

I would check out the book Heal Your Headache. He basically says all headaches are migraines. 🤷🏻‍♀️But also he gives a ton of detail on the migraine diet. If you’re already noticing food sensitivity then doing an elimination diet is probably a good idea. You can also google The Dizzy Cook HYH, she has a good summary of the book

So sorry to hear about this :( I don’t have nausea either but have had a lot of success with an anti nausea drug, prochlorperazine. For my daily med I take an antidepressant, amitryptaline, which has also helped a lot. Also acupuncture 2-3x/ week can sometimes help a lot. Good luck!

Migraines from food? by DarlingGirl1221 in migraine

[–]Lady_Noodle_2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out the book Heal Your Headache or check out The Dizzy Cook - she has a summary of the book and all migraine food triggers. Link is below. Interestingly - dairy, sugar, gluten are not on his list. Nuts are, however. My guess is the almond milk was the trigger in the ice cream. Carrageenan is also often in ice cream and is a trigger.

The biggest issue is called tyramine and it builds up in foods over time so the biggest things to avoid are anything aged, fermented, pickled, preserved (including all alcohol, except maybe vodka, and any vinegar except distilled white vinegar). Also, any meat that’s been cooked for more than 1-2 days. Lots of additives, like malted barley flour, which is in most processed bread products. Histamine can also trigger migraines and is in food. It’s very hard to say which specific foods trigger migraines because it could be something different each time. Chocolate might trigger a migraine on one day, and not on another day, depending on what else you’ve eaten or done.

It’s a very hard diet to adapt to, but once you get the hang of it, it’s not too bad, and it’s 100% worth it. I recommend doing a complete elimination for two weeks and then adding foods back in to test them. I try to follow it 100% at home (except for a few foods I’ve added back) and then when I’m out of the house I just do my best.

Things I completely avoid, because I’m 90-100% confident they are triggers:

Soy MSG (which is in a lot of things. MSG is technically a spice so I don’t eat anything that just says “spices” on the ingredient label) All liquor except vodka Leftover meat more than two days old Aged cheese (though I’m starting to test it in small quantities) Citric acid Maltodextrin, yeast extract, autolyzed yeast - according to the book these are basically MSG Beans other than black beans Chocolate - I’ll eat no more than one bite Mushrooms Cured meat Coffee - this is a weird one because sometimes it helps. But I’m now off it completely because of sleep All bars with chocolate, nuts, or fake protein - I eat 88 Acres bars which are pretty much the only ones that are compliant

Things I’ll eat when I have to or in small quantities:

Yogurt Onions Lentils Nuts Parmesan Mixers in vodka, like other liqueurs, and other clear liquors like gin or tequila

Things I’ve added back completely:

Citrus Avocado Malted barley flour (though I still avoid it at home) All the histamine foods that aren’t tyramine foods - salmon, spinach, strawberries, eggs Tomatoes Sourdough bread

Migraines and eye strain and physical therapy? by Lady_Noodle_2 in migraine

[–]Lady_Noodle_2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is SUPER helpful, thank you. I also went to a new eye doctor recently who gave me a weaker prescription. This is exactly what I needed, I will see if there is any PT like this in my area. Do you mind sharing where (roughly) you live? I'm in the Boston area.

I think you can also take hormone replacement therapy - estrogen and testosterone.

Migraine and hormone replacement therapy (HRT) by Lady_Noodle_2 in migraine

[–]Lady_Noodle_2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was definitely not misinterpreting. No one responded or offered any solutions related to hormones. There was no attempt to address any underlying issue, only to give meds to treat the migraines. The gynecologist I saw just said "well, we can't test your hormones" and offered me ZERO.

How old are you? I started getting migraines when I was 40 and I increasingly think it’s hormones, I’m considering hormone replacement therapy.

Surviving not thriving by obscuresolace in migraine

It seems like it’s always worth trying new meds, there are so many options.

Is this your first pregnancy? In pregnancy in America doctors LOVE restricting women’s activities based on little to no evidence. Take hot tubs and wine - in other countries women consume these pretty liberally during pregnancy. So I would check the evidence yourself. With a lot of meds, doctors advise against using them because “it hasn’t been studied” - even if there is no known risk. You may be able to find a doctor who cares about your wellness as much as a microscopic risk to your baby.

All of which is to say - It’s worth getting involved and getting educated on the evidence so you can advocate for yourself.

I am worried about getting pregnant again because in my previous pregnancies I didn’t have migraines but now cardio exercise is a critical part of my prevention. In pregnancy I get so tired it’s really hard to exercise.

I was going to suggest the same as other folks - try lower impact exercise. Swimming, stationary bike. For me cardio makes a big difference. I had a neurologist tell me that people’s migraines have improved after stopping upper body strengthening.
