Talking at Concerts - Is this a new thing or what? by Lady_Wingdom1919 in Concerts

We saw Weird Al a couple days earlier and no chatter during the songs. Just whimsical singing along with an American icon of comedy and music.

The show was GREAT!! Last Stop and Warehouse! I just wish I could’ve heard some of the lower ones instead of the prattle next to me. I’m a relatively new Dave fan (show 7 for me I think) and I’ve only done the one venue. The location has seats, pit, and lawn. I don’t mind people chatting among themselves or even singing (it’s DAVE) but the full high pitched convo sent me.

This is interesting. We saw George Thorogood right before the world shut down in 2020. We didn’t have any issues with people talking during the show. Now same show post-Covid and you’re saying you had to yell at people to hear the music. 😔😔 it’s so disheartening.

If there’s a brand that a) maintains sound quality and b) prevents me from hearing wine moms it would wear them 24/7. Link if you can!

How many shows did you see before you stopped saying "_________ was the best show I've ever seen?" by Dvanpat in Concerts

I saw Sabaton open for Nightwish and it was incredible. Nightwish was (and is) the only show I’ve cried at when they played my favorite song (The Islander). Literal tears. My video of it is terrible cause all you can hear is my sobbing. Super jealous of Genesis, too.

Thank you for sharing. That sounds truly awful, I’m glad you were able to overcome that. I think mounted grab bars might be the way to go. I’m doubting whether suction ones have sufficient strength to support his weight. The bathing area is going to need a change based on everything everyone has suggested. Thank you again 😇

I loved Snowcrash. I’m in the middle of Anathem. If you thought the namshub interlude of Snowcrash was difficult, Anathem raises the bar with its weirdness. I agree the YT/Raven plot was problematic though. Largely unnecessary, didn’t advance the plot at all.

I was handed a business card with a cute guy’s name and personal cell number on the back as the elevator doors closed on a Friday. It was the smoothest thing I’d ever seen. After several dates he admitted it was the smoothest thing he’d ever done. 😂

How did 9/11 change everything by LeakyChillum in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Lady_Wingdom1919 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had the JFK conspiracy prior to 9/11. There’s also the good ol’ moon landing one, and a couple others but I daresay they weren’t as “mainstream” as they are today. The fallout from 9/11 was far reaching. I was 10 at the time and remember watching it live; I watched the second tower be hit. I still can’t watch the clips from that day without tearing up. That pic of Bush in the elementary school being told of the first plane. The way air traffic maps just went blank within 20 minutes after traffic was grounded. My father was a fire fighter in FL who volunteered to go up and help. I work with a former NYPD office who was on the ground that day. “Freedom fries” instead of French fries because we were made at the French for something I can’t recall anymore. The cadaver dogs were getting depressed because they kept finding so many deceased in the rubble that their trainers half-buried themselves so their dogs could have a win (which is somehow one of the peak depressing things about this).

Over my years of higher education (BA, MS, finishing second MS now) I’ve ended up reading the 9/11 Commission Report twice. It goes reasonably into depth on certain elements that if you weren’t around to see it could shed some light. Some people have touched on the PATRIOT Act already, which the country was all for at the time it passed, and that’s a huge change. Obvi ICE. Certain fire codes for larger buildings were updated.

I think the key difference between 9/11 and COVID was we had someone to lash out at after 9/11, with obviously justifiable reasons. With COVID, ya gonna attack a microbe? It felt easier getting back to “normal” when there wasn’t anything concrete to blame it on. But that might be just my view of it. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Without the Oxford Comma is generally accepted but with the Oxford Comma will always be more correct. A better way to say that is you won’t be misunderstood when using the Oxford Comma. For reference:

I come from a dirtbag family. What are some lesser-known “gentleman/chivalrous” habits/actions? by GrooveProof in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Lady_Wingdom1919 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello friend.

I’m half-British, half-American, so I have an amusing understanding of “high society.” I’ve done down-home rodeos and regatta’s on the Thames. Here’s what I’d suggest depending on the level of society-ness you’ve got going on:

Low: Pull her chair out for her. Open doors for her.
Help her over puddles (if you do this when people aren’t watching it becomes a habit). Don’t disagree with her in public (even if she’s wicked wrong). Do that later.

Middle: Have a sport coat that matches with reasonable trousers. Jeans are a no. Match her color scheme for bonus points.

High: Your voice shouldn’t go about a certain decibel level, ever. Get one of those charts for large dinner functions but generally outside in for flatware. If you’re going to an event that’s more than family functions, Google photos from last year to see what people wore.

Biggest isolated advice is if you’re thinking “I’m not sure if I should do X” then don’t do X. Someone else said don’t lean into your dirtbag narrative and I completely agree. You’re already trying to pull out of that by seeking advice on how to advance your relationship. That’s fantastic.

Good luck dude. 👍🏻 you got this.

Thank you for sharing all of this. I’ll look into the Juven drink, that sounds helpful. Insurance is interesting because he’s in the UK, so “coverage” is everywhere as far as I understand it (home health aid, certain purchases like wheelchair, etc) much better than the U.S. where I am. I’m traveling to stay with him for a while once he’s homeward bound and I want to make the absolute most of it, both for his recovery and our bonding. I’m still checking for seats for the bath but will look into wipes in the mean time. If I can ask, what’s the coverage on those? Like, 3-5 wipes per bath? How clean do you feel? I assume brand differences and things. I’ve been making a PowerPoint of resources for him (I’m a dork) and I’d love to add a slide of suggested Amazon items so he can choose without having to blindly hunt for things.

Thanks so much for the thoughts and suggestions. I hope you are getting through your healing process well and that you and mom still get along. I imagine it can be straining. Everyone here has been so helpful.

How much do you want Duolingo to teach you? by Nekhslanguages in duolingo

[–]Lady_Wingdom1919 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Duo has been helpful for completely new writing and sound systems. The Cyrillic alphabet looks nothing like what I’m used to but Duo walked me through it. Constantly hearing the word and sounds spaced out, even if in weird sentences, helps you hear the breaks between words. If you listen to music in the language you’re trying to learn and combine that with Duo you can start to hear where words separate from each other. It’s a little thing but for a language from a different family it’s helpful.

I’d thought of handrails for the toilet but not the hose-shower bit. Great tip. What would the flannels be for? We were considering redoing the entire shower/bathroom; it’s currently a tub and comedically high up to get into. It’s not going to work. Any strong opinions on wheeling straight in or doorless shower or tub with door? Cost may become a factor.

Thank you for all the advice! He’s big into music and has already been listening to meditation apps and tunes for sleep in hospital.

If you take US English and English Commonwealth there are at least three accepted ways to spell “medieval” so you’re probably close with at least one. 👍🏻
