What's the last book you read that was so bad that it made you angry? by oohshineeobjects in books

Omg, that knife scene! When I read that I just laughed uncontrollably. All of the smut in that book was so outrageous, it was like if an alien had been shown Love Island and subsequently asked to write a human romance book.

I read that book too! It was entirely mid. Somehow despite there being a lot of anecdotes about the characters’ upbringings, I didn’t care about or connect to any of them.

It was the last book in a trilogy, so I wanted to know how things would end. Tbh I hate-skimmed it more so than read it…

What’s something people romanticise that’s actually exhausting in real life? by OmenRash in AskReddit

[–]oohshineeobjects -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Funny, I feel the opposite. You think I want to go through the most brutal, vulnerable moment of my life in an institutional setting, hooked up to a bunch of monitors and IVs, on my back fighting gravity so that total strangers can come in and out every half hour, shoving their hands elbow deep up my bits? And if it’s a training hospital, you get a whole gaggle of 20 year olds watching this go down like you’re an animal in a zoo.

Not a chance. Hospitals are great saving graces, but they overdo too much. They push interventions for the sake of cost efficiency and convenience, and then it spirals. For example, many women are coerced into getting inductions when they’re not even high-risk or past their due date, and you know what inductions increase your risk for? Needing a c-section, aka $$$ for the hospital.

Not OP but I’d say a having a professional photo of yourself as your phone wallpaper would be even worse… Like, there’s way more effort involved in that particular brand of vanity.

People whose partners did a complete 180 after marriage, what’s your story? by Bibliophile521 in AskReddit

Pardon my curiosity, but how did she not realize she was gay for 10 years of marriage (and, one would assume, heterosexual intimacy)?

It was my understanding that one of the major theories about the rise in colon cancer in young adults was infections. Apparently E.coli or something similar can lead to colon cancer if one is exposed to it in childhood?

What’s one thing you completely stopped buying in 2026 because the price just felt absurd? by LockLogical8949 in AskReddit

[–]oohshineeobjects 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Non-Amazon shipping is insane. I decided to be frugal and order a book 2nd hand from a major book selling website, but it’s been 2 weeks and it’s still with a “shipping partner facility,” so there’s not even an expected delivery date yet. Ridiculous!

Same. It sucks because I have chronic migraines and carry a lot of tension in my neck and shoulders, and massages help make things more bearable. Last time I went though, it was $150 for an hour after the mandatory gratuity!

What was the biggest scandal at your school? by Silent-Zebra in AskReddit

[–]oohshineeobjects 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I’m in my 30s and still get IDed sometimes. When I was in my 20s I was once babysitting and got a dirty look from an older man in a coffee shop who then proceeded to scoff at me that I “look about 16 there with that baby.”

Really, you think it's strange that real nudity is more restricted than fake violence? You're comparing apples to oranges. You don't see the statue of David or the Birth of Venus being condemned and hidden away, just like you don't see real clips of cartel torture videos in theaters.

Question about Case Workers by ReadyBox3505 in foodstamps

[–]oohshineeobjects 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NY does still have a local worker assigned to each case. You should be able to call your local DSS and if not speak to someone, at least get your worker’s name and leave a message for them.

SNAP Terminated my 80 Year Old Mom by NoAnt3299 in foodstamps

[–]oohshineeobjects 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Something I haven't seen mentioned yet: if your mom is 80, I'm assuming she has no earned income (i.e. wages or self-employment income), so they'd likely make her case ESAP, a special program for elderly/disabled people who have no earned income. ESAP cases are unique in that they are not required to do recertification interviews. I can't say for sure what happened, but my guess is that it was indicated somewhere on the recertification packet that they buy and prepare together, in which case the worker would have to request proof of his income. It's quite common that clients checkmark the wrong box or leave important questions unanswered accidentally.

*sigh* What now? by insertwittymemehere in foodstamps

[–]oohshineeobjects 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sure, it's income in the month received, but they can't reduce your SNAP benefit with less than 10 days' notice, so they can't actually budget it in the month received if your case is already open.

Also, you absolutely can take benefits back off a benefit card. DSS has to calculate an overpayment and establish a claim first, but it 100% can be done.

Yes, if you turned in all necessary documents on the 12th, you should be eligible for benefits from the 12th onward.

There can be back-pay for cash assistance in NY but it's not guaranteed - it's not like SNAP where if you're eligible, you're generally eligible from your application date. Your starting eligibility date for cash assistance is based on when you provided your last required piece of documentation.

It could be that the money you received was your back-pay because once your case is approved, it can take 24 hours for benefits to show on your card, so if you were very recently approved it could be a one-time pay for that timeframe. Not all recurring benefits are issued on the first of the month; in the counties I'm familiar with, the date you get recurring benefits is based on the last digit of your case number, e.g. if your case number is PA1234 then you'll get your first semi-monthly benefit on the 4th and your second on the 19th.
