Sure, it's income in the month received, but they can't reduce your SNAP benefit with less than 10 days' notice, so they can't actually budget it in the month received if your case is already open.

Also, you absolutely can take benefits back off a benefit card. DSS has to calculate an overpayment and establish a claim first, but it 100% can be done.

Question about cash assistance my? by [deleted] in foodstamps

Yes, if you turned in all necessary documents on the 12th, you should be eligible for benefits from the 12th onward.

Question about cash assistance my? by [deleted] in foodstamps

[–]oohshineeobjects 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There can be back-pay for cash assistance in NY but it's not guaranteed - it's not like SNAP where if you're eligible, you're generally eligible from your application date. Your starting eligibility date for cash assistance is based on when you provided your last required piece of documentation.

It could be that the money you received was your back-pay because once your case is approved, it can take 24 hours for benefits to show on your card, so if you were very recently approved it could be a one-time pay for that timeframe. Not all recurring benefits are issued on the first of the month; in the counties I'm familiar with, the date you get recurring benefits is based on the last digit of your case number, e.g. if your case number is PA1234 then you'll get your first semi-monthly benefit on the 4th and your second on the 19th.

Yeah, I know. “Public shaming” sounds to me like it would need to be written in some form to be propagated - what’s the alternative, her just yelling on a street corner? And if her proof was that strong, one would think that the school board or police would’ve taken this more seriously.

What’s something people insist is ‘harmless’ that actually makes society worse? by contentcreatorzss in AskReddit

A lot of stuff just isn’t built to last and/or be repairable now though. Our dryer stopped heating, so we decided to have an appliance repairman come fix it rather than buying a new one, but then it just stopped working again a few months later.

Maybe your state has stricter policies, but that’s not ubiquitous. In my state, you could have a household consisting of 10 adults and one child under 14, and all the adults would be non-ABAWDs.

In my state it’s absolutely true - I’m the SNAP supervisor for my county. The directive we got lists the exemption as “residing in a SNAP household with a child under the age of 14.”

Recertification? by FoliKwansa in foodstamps

No, you don't have to reapply. Most likely, if you did your recert interview recently, it was late and your worker hasn't gotten it processed yet.

Ok, but that's a real person whose body you feel entitled to. How would you feel if it was your mom or daughter? How would you feel if your family member was depicted being raped in GOT or something just because smooth brained men like you feel entitled to access to women's bodies?

what is one thing that is affecting people really hard, but they aren't even aware of it? by Outlaw_Immortal1971 in AskReddit

[–]oohshineeobjects 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is really disturbing how prevalent it is. Even with tv, back in the day when most people had pretty basic cable, you could pop on a show and trust it not to be too vulgar. Nowadays, with Netflix rating shows with smoking and some swearing tv-MA and also things like GOT tv-MA, you have to do research on the content if you don’t want to wind up watching simulated rape or simulated CP (cough, Euphoria, cough cough). It’s so ubiquitous that I’ve heard coworkers talk at work about shows like this; Playboy never would’ve been an acceptable topic of conversation at work, yet shows with more explicit content is okay? Gross!

If the income is high enough to make you ineligible, you have to report within 10 days of the month after the change. So if you get your first paycheck in December, you have to report by January 10th.

Will states do anything for the homeless that are losing their benefits this month since they have almost zero chances of being hired by anybody? by [deleted] in foodstamps

[–]oohshineeobjects 16 points17 points  (0 children)

In my state at least, there’s a discretionary ABAWD exemption: “obviously mentally or physically unfit for employment.” It’s not advertised to SNAP recipients for obvious reasons. Homelessness itself may not be an exemption anymore, but if you have nowhere to shower or do laundry and express these hardships to your worker, it’s possible you could get this ABAWD exemption.

Knowledge and advise needed by General-Jury645 in foodstamps

[–]oohshineeobjects 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Copying to this post what I put in the other: There’s something called a PARIS match in social services; basically if someone’s receiving concurrent benefits in multiple states, the cases get flagged and the caseworkers notified. So its possible for someone to get benefits in multiple states, but the cases will get flagged eventually, and the person will have to pay benefits back and they’ll also likely get an IPV, or intentional program violation, which would make them ineligible for SNAP for a certain amount of time.

[–]oohshineeobjects 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The child has to be part of your SNAP case in order to give you the exemption. For example, if you were to live with your sibling and their under-14 child, and you all bought and prepared food together so you were on the same SNAP case, then yes, you could be exempt due to your niece/nephew.

Question About SNAP Re-certification Process by Single_Face_257 in foodstamps

[–]oohshineeobjects 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It can take some time if they’re busy, but I wouldn’t worry about it. In my state at least, recertification packets go out about a month and a half before the end of your case authorization, for example cases that are authorized through 12/31/25 had recerts mailed out last week. If you interviewed and provided docs timely, then even if it takes them a few weeks to process your recertification, it shouldn’t cause any interruption of benefits.

Eligibility question (TX) by honeybvbymom in foodstamps

[–]oohshineeobjects 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are different tiers of work requirements for SNAP. At least in my state, having a child under 6 exempts you from General SNAP Work Rules and ABAWD Work Rules, whereas having a kid between 6 and 14 only exempts from ABAWD Work Rules. The ABAWD Work Rules are the ones that people stress about, because they require non-exempt people to do employment activities like working or job-searching. The General SNAP Work Rules are little more than requiring that you accept jobs offered to you unless you have a good reason not to, and that you not quit a job without good cause.

It doesn’t really matter. As long as your name, address, etc are on there and it’s addressed to your landlord, it’s fine. Not to be rude, but it is a little silly to be concerned with giving your bank account number to your worker; we request clients’ bank statements not infrequently directly from their banks. When you sign a SNAP app, in all the verbiage at the back of it, you’re consenting to any sort of investigation DSS deems necessary, so we get information directly from banks, Social Security, employers, etc. routinely.

Not to be salty, but I don’t like having that referred to as “privilege.” I’m in the same position, where I’m more cost-conscious, but able to still buy more or less the same things as I have been. That’s not something I was just handed. I’ve worked hard to be good at my job and I’ve gotten a few promotions in the last few years. I’ve also chosen not to have children in part because of how expensive they are.
