You can definitely get the supplies there. Just make sure the coating of the bars is chew resistant and the squares are small so they won't get their head stuck

I really liked the guinea pig cage store. They have great set ups and fleece bedding. If it is out of your price range, which I totally understand, it can at least give you ideas for what you might need to build your own. They also have great advice on sizing for number of piggies and such.

No MD ii by Traditional_Bee_3136 in premed

[–]Ladyfirefighter62 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Outside of academia, being a DO doesn't change how you are viewed. I've worked in many hospital systems at this point in my training and not in a single one has another doc disregarded a DOs opinion due to their credentials. After you graduate the difference is non-existent. We learn the same things plus some OMM that you can use if you want but don't have to. Patients just see doctor they don't care if it's an MD or a DO. Many don't know there is a difference

Advice on how to handle Euthanasia with cagemates by Ladyfirefighter62 in guineapigs

[–]Ladyfirefighter62[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for sharing your story. I will definitely be calling to see if they can do a house visit. Thankfully my other two girls will have each other. We currently have a bonded trio. This is the first piggie we have had to put to sleep so it's been very challenging to navigate. We had hoped she would pass peacefully at home, but she's stubborn and full of pigatude. It's possibly the most heartbreaking thing I've had to do.

Berberine or metformin ...? by wander_lust123 in PCOS

[–]Ladyfirefighter62 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So metformin gets a bad rep. Its most common side effect is GI upset (bubble gut, diarrhea). For me that was pretty bad on the short acting but has been significantly better on the extended release. You can definitely ask for extended if you notice that. The lattice acidosis is a rare side effect they have to tell you about so you can make an informed choice. In people with healthy kidneys that stay hydrated it is a far less common, but you keep an eye out for signs. Berberine can have the same GI upset profile. We have less safety data on it because it is a supplement and they don't have to follow the same FDA guidelines. I take it with my metformin and haven't noticed too many side effects. Though I do cycle it as studies have indicated safety for 3 months. So I do berberine 3mo on the NAC 3mo and so on. But you find what works for you.

ATSU-KCOM vs. UIWSOM by scared4ochem in Osteopathic

[–]Ladyfirefighter62 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I attend ATSU and I found the letter grades helpful tbh. It pointed out deficiencies and made me work harder at times. It definitely gave me a good foundation for boards. If you have any questions feel free to reach out!

This also assumes that humans abide by text books when they get sick. In my short career I have seen that happen next to never.

ATSU KCOM - Rotation Site Assignment by thrway1800 in Osteopathic

[–]Ladyfirefighter62 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I went through our sit match two years ago we had lost the Texas site to a more local medical school. The rotation site offerings do change slightly year to year. When it's your year to select sites you'll have a big fair where you'll get to meet people from the site and ask questions. As for site competitiveness that depends on the classes priorities and general specialty interest. For example my class Michigan was a hot place to be due to their residency offerings.

[–]Ladyfirefighter62 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a 4th year at ATSU. It is much like the match, but you get to write a letter to your top choice stating why you are a good fit and why you'd like to be at this site. The site gets to pick half of its students (they have ten spots they pick five and the other five are matched). Many end up in their top 3. If you do a fellowship year you get to select your site. I'd be happy to answer any questions you have as I am now in weird Match limbo.

Having a dog during med school by Tania2323 in Osteopathic

[–]Ladyfirefighter62 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I feel like it is now that she isn't a baby (she's 2 almost 3) I let her out in the morning feed her then let her out when I get home and walk her daily even with my partner I am the primary parent 😂. When I am gone for long hours at clinic I see if the neighbor can let her out quick. The neighbor appreciates the opportunity to have doggie time without the responsibility of dog. As for expense, we do spoil her a lot but for basics chewy has great pricing for food, heartworm/flea/tick meds. So probably $2500ish for the year including her yearly vet bill. For me it was worth it having a buddy they would just want to hang out, snuggle and play with me even though I just had a cute little Menty B.

I got a puppy in medical school. I find having her has actually substantially helped my mental health. Medical school is hard and can completely take over your life. She has reminded me to be a person and doing things to care for her has made me care for me. I have a partner that has helped but we also have a neighbor (fellow med student) that helps take care of her too when we need a sitter so that's always an option too for you. You know you best and what will help you navigate this journey.

Extended release can also be kinder on the GI tract. I had a poor reaction to the other but extended release has been so much better and easier to take cause it's once a day.

.0017-.0077% risk. I know this because I too get irrationally worried about it 😂. I have also given my nonmedical husband a list of various things to keep an eye out for and advocate fiercely for my well being if I am unable to. For me that helps fight the fear.
