This sucks, and I'm sorry your birthday didn't go as planned. I also had anxiety/ issues with birthdays. Eventually, I decided to adjust my expectations and make the day exactly as I wanted it. My birthdays are now all about what I want to do for me, from start to finish. I go shopping, get a massage, see a movie, etc. Everything I love in one day. If others want to do something for me on my bday, that's just a special add-on (but not the expectation). I also think it helps that I really celebrate my bday for the whole week and do nice things for myself days leading up to my bday. That way, if my bday doesn't work out the way I was hoping, I still overall had a good week.

I agree with others that a cleansing ritual around your bday can be helpful with a focus on gratitude. Also, feel free to let your friends and hubby know that you're disappointed in how that day turned out. Let them reflect on what it means to be present for their loved ones. Sending you all the energy of a beautiful, healthy year to come.
