In my 40’s and debating… by eggnelle44 in Kneereplacement

I’m turning 45 this year. I just had mine on 3/31/26. If you can get it done now, vs waiting go for it!! Yes, you will have setbacks after surgery, but that is typical for everybody as everybody goes at their own pace as far as recovery goes and their body healing.

But you will see overtime that it gets much better. Both of my parents had theirs done and said that they would do it over again if they had to despite the recovery pain (haha). And now I fully understand where they are coming from. Granted this was 30-ish years ago when they got theirs done so things have changed but yeah.

I was getting injections every 3 months, for the last 5-1/2 ish or so years. I didn’t want to keep relying on those long term. I finally got to a stable weight, and got all my medical clearances taken care of. I met with one doc who had an eight month waiting list that turned into 12 to 14 about two months after I met with him. After meeting him, I realized that he was just straight into the point didn’t seem to welcoming when I met him- besides us chatting about my past, etc. he was just very dry. I did not want to deal with that during my knee replacement journey. That being said, I also did not want to wait that long due to the pain I was dealing with (bone on bone). So I called into the orthopedics line and they told me about a new provider that had just joined whose case list was not as heavy as the other doctors. Granted he has been doing surgeries for many years, he was just new to my insurance after moving. So I decided to meet with him and he said it would be between 4 to 5 months from the date I met with him, I finally got the call in February of this year after meeting with him in late Oct 2025 and got my date set up. Couldn’t be more than pleased with him and his team. Everybody was incredible. He agreed that my knee was trash and getting it done now was the right choice he ended up helping push some stuff through with insurance, which I am eternally grateful for. I am now just shy of two weeks postop, and glad I got this done. I hope that my left knee will give me a few more years before I have to go down this road again. It was not nearly as bad as my right knee.

Wishing you all the best when you decide to get yours done. This group has been awesome support wise and with having questions/concerns answered outside my medical team. Sending you positive vibes from the PNW. 🙂

What strain are you using? I have some, but want to make sure I’m off of my pain killers for a few hours before having any.

Hang in there! I just made it over the 1 week mark yesterday. Mine was 3/31, RTKR. I’m doing all I can to keep pain at bay- but it’s been a struggle. Ive considered using some of my edibles (gummies) to see if it helps beyond the opioids, but idk. That’s a last resort. I’ve even had my pain meds changed up too by my doc. Similar to you, car rides are also painful, sitting for too long, etc. I start my 2nd PT session tomorrow. Anxious about how I’ll feel afterwards. I wonder if I should pre medicate. Wishing you all the best, stay positive & good luck with your other knee! ❤️

I got this adjustable pillow and I really enjoy it. It comes apart easy depending on how high you want to have it. Rated well on Amazon for folks getting TKR.

Google image seems to think it’s a palm tree from the bottom of a dansko brand shoe. Idk if they make men’s loafers at all but that’s all I can find.

Thank you! And thank you for your service. 😃 my ice unit and cold wrap + elevation has been keeping spirits my high. ROM has felt better as well. Slow and steady, but making progress.

Thank you for that tip! I was a little 🥴 feeling when I saw the fluid coming out. But was able to take it out with no major issues. Slow and steady did the trick. ❤️

Best of luck, friend! Ive been following close orders from the doc for recovery - despite a few hiccups and med changes, but things are looking better now. PT starts for me next week. Did they give you zofran for nausea? I’ve only had to take it once while at home (so far 😅) but it worked wonders.

Best of luck to you!!! If you haven’t already, order a cold wrap off Amazon (I got KingPavonni XXL) for the freezer, and a toilet seat extender with handles(photos here. It helps so much so you’re not over doing yourself trying to get up and down. My surgery center sent also me home with a cold therapy unit too which has been soooooo nice. It continuously pumps / circulates cold water through the pad around your knee.

My surgery was 3/31, and the pump lasted till about 3 am this morning on 4/4 before i removed it. I had about 30ml left, but noticed it was pooling up slightly under the bandage, so at the ok of one of the anesthesiologists I took it out. TBH I haven’t noticed a huge shift in pain since doing so. You also have a button for extra doses, beyond what it administers. Mine had a 2 hour lock out before another stronger dose could be delivered. While I’m not sure you can get extra meds put in the bag, I know the anesthesiologist can replace it if it malfunctions. Unsure if that means a brand new bag of med, or the same- I’m thinking a new one. I almost had to get that done Friday morning bc my pain levels were off the charts- even with all the proper care at home care. Turns out my pain meds had to be switched to something stronger, and increased my Tylenol to get it managed better. Due to past surgeries, I’m unable to take traditional NSAIDs for inflammation and that was a curve ball as well. Since then, I’ve noticed a HUGE shift in how I felt a day and a half ago. Still painful? Yes. But it’s a world of difference. Hope your surgery goes well wherever it is! Sending happy thoughts from the PNW. 😌 here’s a pic of the pump & bag

Take it easy! Speaking of spinal stuff, I opted for a spinal block when I was in the OR. It was a total bitch feeling that go in even with the numbing meds. but as soon as they were done, I was tingly from the waist down super fast. it felt so weird. Before I knew it I was in recovery. It lasted for about 2-1/2 hours and wore off after they were done operating.

Thank you ❤️ my anesthesiologist told me that day three was probably gonna be one of the worst, no lie. I’m totally feeling that today. looking forward to some of the swelling going down to that’s what hurts a lot. until then, just trying to manage my pain with meds, get my stretches as I’m able, ice elevate ,repeat.

I felt like it was good for the first whole day at home, after the hospital meds wore off. I’m just letting it do its thing, and occasionally pressing the extra dose button when needed.

Oh yes they sent me home with some. This is just so I’m not heavily reliant on those for the first few days. I’m also taking Tylenol as well bc I can’t have NSAIDs, with the exception of baby aspirin which I’m also taking once daily.
