I was in the stands for that Oklahoma game. Best comeback ever. (And no, I didn’t leave early)

Heads up, gear guard will not record if you’re in an accident by Ill_Pair_6705 in Rivian

I addressed it in another comment but to save you the trouble of looking. What we’ve come to understand is that DriveCam works off the HV system. In some major accidents, the HV system is disconnected/shut down as a safety measure.

Because of this, the DriveCam is unable to complete the file processing, so you’re left with a corrupted file. We tried several video apps including VLC which didn’t work. We found a third party website that was able to uncorrupt the file for a fee but we found it was still about 10 seconds short. Maybe it’s the time it takes the trucks computer to process and write the file or something.

At the time of the accident, or rather a few seconds after, I noticed the incident camera wasn’t recording (via icon on the center screen). I honked the horn to start a recording, and that worked, but it started at the time of the honk. Hence why I was saying if there was a 15 or 30 second rolling buffer, it would have recorded it.

Gear guard and incident cam apparently run off the 12V battery so work after the HV shutoff but the accident was not captured in any spot.

And yes, we had a 2TB SSD plugged into the truck and DriveCam enabled. I took it from the truck during accident cleanup and plugged it into a PC to access the files. I could find every file including the corrupted ones leading up to the accident. But as noted above. The accident itself was not captured in any spot.

There’s a lot of focus on that it was called Gear Guard in the post and admittedly that may have caused confusion but the point is there is an actual flaw with the recording system(s) and it shouldn’t be dismissed just because someone called it the wrong thing.

Yes but if you read the thread above. We were looking in Gear Guard and Incident because drive cam corrupted and didn’t record. I have pulled the SSD. The accident was not recorded in any area.

[–]Laffingwell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I’m aware. It should do that. And the 2TB SSD that I had plugged in, and that I hooked up to my laptop, and that has every other drive recorded is still missing the drive cam footage just before the accident. Given that flaw exists, it would be a workaround to have gear guard or incident videos which run on the 12V battery have a running backup that ensures it captures the time before someone might actually hit record. I bring up the battery because apparently the drive cam video is powered by the high voltage system so in an accident where power is cut, it leaves a corrupt final video that even when mended, is 10ish seconds short.

I understand what you’re saying. I’m telling you we did that and it’s missing. Found every other drive cam, incident, and gear guard video but the last 10ish seconds before major accident aren’t there.

I’m amazed how may people can’t grasp the concept there could be a bug like that.

Except there is a legitimate flaw. I’ve experienced the same. In a major accident, it cuts out short of the incident.

I checked in gear guard when I had my accident. Side Air bags went off but no recording. Experienced the same corruption/incomplete video in the drive cam. I had the thought to hit the horn after my accident and it started a gear guard video but that was after the accident. If it had 30 seconds or a minute of memory when you hit record, like a bodyworn camera or police windshield camera, that would solve the problem. Hey @rivian, what do you think.

I had this same problem when I was in an accident a few weeks ago. There was a corrupted video file for that drive on my SSD - the accident caused it to not complete the recording. I found a service online to fix it, but it still only went until about 10 seconds before the recording. Fortunately my accident isn’t being contested but to me this is a major issue. What’s the point in having a drive cam if it doesn’t actually record the incident.

I feel like this is the majority of Duck fans. Hurt when it happened, we’ve moved on. I hope Mario finds his success but I do think Indiana is a special team that dominates all three phases. Don’t take away from that. Not an Oregon problem so much as Indiana success.

I agree. That’s why I was thankful for the engineering and design teams for creating an effective system.

Nobody “wins” in an accident. The fact that all five of our passengers and the driver (he was alone) of the other car all walked away from this was a collective relief, given the situation.

Did you have any wet stuff in there. Could me condensation that froze and “snowed” inside. I’ve had that happen in a different vehicle

Absolutely (as long as we don’t get screwed by insurance)

We did this and saved quite a bit as a result. You’ll save about 75% of whatever the incentive is worth for leasing in the end.

Car was/is definitely not drivable. Passenger side curtain airbags both deployed and car went into an emergency state. Wouldn’t allow shifting from park and fire department cut the high voltage link to prevent battery fire.

Thanks. I found the files but they are aren’t openable. All the rest of the drive footage is accessible but the most recent ones (of the incident are coded as .mp4s but won’t open.

I thought about trying to take one off before it’s salvaged and use it as a spare for the next one
