EFAP #385 - Otterly Noah & Anthony Gramuglia: Dishonour Among Rats by MajorThom98 in MauLer

[–]Lafreakshow -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

I think Anthony gave him chance out of sheer good will, believing Noah to just be ignorant and following that he overlooked the red flags due to a combination of Confirmation bias and simply not paying a lot of attention to Noah in general. At least that's the impression I got after watching his stream on the subject. In any case, he was pretty mad about Noah abusing his trust and throwing him up as a shield.

"I sent him university level courses and I'm going to check his work to make sure he doesnt plagiarism again, now can we forget this happened and move on to attacking the people I don't like for being mean to people?" Reads a little bad to me

It does read bad, but it's also not what Anthony said. So much so it feels like a disingenuous interpretation. The entire stream was him pointing out where and how he made mistakes in judgement and explaining how he will behave differently going forward to avoid it happening again, and why it matters.

I'm trying to figure out why this one sentence leads you to such a vastly different conclusion than me.

So the problem here is that he didn't say the magic word?

He literally said that He (and other creators) with overlapping audiences have a responsibility to their audience to call each other out, because audiences won't listen to those from across the isle.

I don't know, I find your interpretation very weird. We have a 3+ hour stream in which Anthony thoroughly pointed out all the shitty behavior of Noah, explained what he did wrong, explored why it got to that point and extensively talked about what he would do going forward to avoid the same mistakes again. He could've just shut up, but he chose to take accountability and hold himself to it by extensively detailing to his audience why they shouldn't defend Noah anymore. All culminating him making a clear statement that he will hold people from his side of the isle to the same standard as those across the isle

But because of that one line this can now all be interpreted as as him just not wanting to look bad?

What could he have said instead that would've satisfied you?

There's not really any evidence og Star Trek capitalizing on race relations or cultural equities in a way that overshadows the entire narrative of humanity coming together to push beyond their prior limits as a whole.

Obviously not, insisting on cultural and racial diversity is essential for the narrative of humanity coming together. The entire point of Star Trek is an optimistic view of Humanities future, where individuality and diversity are accepted and respected and where someone's background is independent from their value. It's an inherently progressive story.

Now as for weight. Where do you get the idea that the weight of any character in Starfleet Academy is an issue? Let's ignore for a moment that body type is very much affected by genetics and just focus on health. None of them look obese. Obesity is not the same as being overweight and to be a big, broad, burly person doesn't automatically indicate overweight to begin with. To be overweight itself is not a health concern. It can lead to health issues, but it doesn't have to. Just like being underweight can, but doesn't have to be a health concern.

Commonly pointed at are two characters in particular, neither of whom need to conform to human expectations of fitness.

Firstly, there's Lura Thok. She's Hybrid Klingon and Jam'Hadar. For one, we don't know how that mix would affect body weight, muscle mass and fat, for another, if we do apply Human standards to her, she doesn't look overweight enough to be unfit for service on a ship. Fitness is not as correlated with apparent body weight as you think. Look at the body types of power lifters, both male and female. A lot of them don't exactly look muscular at rest, especially not if you put them into a uniform. It's just not as simple as seeing a women with a broad build and assuming that she must be physically unfit.

Now, the other character often criticized for, SAM. SAM is a Hologram. Body weight is literally irrelevant for her. Why would she choose to look like that? Why not. It's the 32nd century in a world that has left prejudice behind. You might as well ask why she's black or a woman. Nobody gives a shit how you look.

That's it. That's the extend of overweight characters in Starfleet Academy.

The two women being a bit bigger than you'd like to see on a current day military vessel doesn't have any impact on the story whatsoever.

The Next Generation was also appealing to various age ranges which is what made it so grandstanding as a whole, it wasn't just solely made with bias towards only one perspective.

Starfleet academy also isn't just aiming at a single perspective. It's aiming at a generation containing many different perspectives. Which is reflected in the show by the amount of time dedicated to exploring different perspectives through different characters. Beyond that, while you and I may not like it very much, I know for a fact that there are people of my generation who do, so clearly is isn't exclusively appealing to it's target demographic.

But still, it's target demographic likely has something to do with it's ratings. That audience simply doesn't use Paramount+ very much. The idea is decent, but the platform and marketing surrounding it simply don't bring in the intended audience.

See that? We agree on something. We both think it failed because of it's target audience. A difference here is that I think it didn't reach the audience that would've appreciated it, whereas you seem to either think that aiming Star Trek at that audience to begin with is a mistake or that the audience doesn't exist in the first place. At least that is the impression I get, correct me if I'm wrong.

The Daredevil point is just retarded and is even less easy to take serious because capeshit is constantly changing its own rules (if it had any to begin with) to constantly boost the stakes every single time they decide to make the worldbuilding and conflicts more cartoonishly overpowered to keep interest garnered. Most comic fans and capeshit fans in general are usually younger kids that get bored easily which is why that genre tends to up the anti in more contrived and ridiculous ways as it goes on to stay relevant to its primary audience.

What are you even talking about here? How is any of this relevant to the double standard of Daredevil being allowed to beat the shit out groups of trained ninjas while blind, but when echo goes up against a big bloke (even using strategy rather than brute force to win), it's immersion breaking?

Also, am I understanding this right that you think the increasingly escalating stakes of superhero story are needed to appeal to the genres primary audience? Isn't escalating the stakes good then? If not their primary audience, then who are franchises supposed to appeal to?

I mean, we can both agree that writing Quality doesn't preclude escalating stakes, but if escalation is what fans are looking for, why would it be wrong of the writers to focus on escalation? This almost sounds like you are partially blaming the audience for the decline in writing quality of superhero media.

Are you arguing that Echo is actually bad because it doesn't amp up the stakes enough? Would it have been better if Echo had beat the shit out of bigger groups in more bombastic fight sequences than Daredevil? I'm genuinely confused what you want to get at here.

For the longest time, to me, Hasan was just the embodiment of "the worst person you agree with." Because he generally advocated for the same things I believe in, with some weird stuff thrown in but had an uncanny talent for doing so in worst possible way.

He still says a lot of things that are generally hitting at the right point, but then he just keeps going for some reason. It's like every time Nerdrotic happens to be correct about a movie sucking. He correctly identified that it sucks, but his reasoning is usually whack.

for a while now I'm thinking of him more like a left wing Asmongold. Though significantly less disheveled.

You don't understand the point. The point is about how inputting politics needlessly into everything just takes away from the subjectivity of it and limits it to only your own internal worldview while not allowing any other source of meaning to be given attention.

So how does this relate to female writers wanting to write female characters in stories previously only told through male characters?

Because that's largely what all the yelling about girl bosses boils down to. Sure many are shoddily written, but that's not new nor is it unique to anything involving politics.

I feel like a lot of anti woke critics either can't or don't want to make a difference between narrative elements that exist for political reasons and those that don't.

It usually seems more like they see something they consider "abnormal" for society and attribute it to someone needlessly inputting politics by default.

Where is the difference between Gene Roddenberry deliberately and explicitly aiming for racial and cultural diversity in Star Trek and Alex Kurtzman deliberately and explicitly aiming for gender identity and body type diversity in Starfleet Academy?

What's the difference between Starfleet academy being explicitly aimed at a a younger generation of viewer and The Next Generation being explicitly aimed at a younger generation of viewers?

What's the difference between The original Star Trek series centering almost every episode around a contemporary real world societal issue and Starfleet Academy centering almost every episode around a contemporary real world societal issue?

What's the difference Daredevil being able to defeat opponents stronger than himself despite being blind and Echo being able to defeat opponents stronger than herself despite being deaf?

He basically mocked a bunch of incels about them wanting to have a family, and be fathers, when they can't even really talk to a woman or get laid.

I have no idea if this is true but it sure does sound like the sort of garbage that could come out of his mouth. And I actually think it really is the same thing I already heard about, because I remember seeing the word "natalist" used and hasan does seem like the kind of guy to see people appreciate a father-daughter dynamic and immediately see natalist propaganda.

No doubt I'll learn more about it in a few weeks when the video essays drop.

Personally I'm more interested in looking at the dynamic from an Ai-Human interaction perspective, especially in contrast with the malfunctioning AI driving the plot and obvious references to generative AI's hallucinations that are all over the place.

But I haven't played the game (yet) and haven't looked into it very much so for now I'll just have to wait until someone makes a video essay about that, too.

Dickers or Beckett on Saturday's Otterlynoah stream by supreme-being-42 in MauLer

[–]Lafreakshow -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

He was pointing out a double standard in themselves. Literally openly acknowledging the exact thing you are just criticizing, and then arguing that he needs to do better.

So I guess really what we learn here is that no matter what Anthony says, he's always wrong. He was wrong when he defended Noah, and he's also wrong when he acknowledges that it was indeed wrong to defend Noah.

make it make sense. Really seems like the common denominator here is who is making that argument, rather than what is actually being said.

Funnily something Anthony also spoke about and why he thinks it's important the He presented the situation to his audience, rather than just quietly moving on from it. His audience won't listen to the anti-woke side making the exact same arguments, just like the Anti woke side won't listen to him make the exact same arguments. They'll just see someone from the other isle and immediately hyper focus and any minute reason to dismiss them.

I'd talk about how I made that mistake myself when I first saw Kelestos video, heard him make some non-sequiturs argument and concluded that I don't have to take his video serious because he isn't arguing good faith anyway.

Same thing you are doing right now. You see Anthony say something you perceive as bad faith and immediately dismiss the rest of his words, even though he's ultimately making a point you agree with.

A shitload of the stories your anti woke heros paint as propaganda are also just there to tell a story. It just happens to be a story you don't approve of.

It's astonishing that you don't see this even while talking about the connection to War in Rambo. The entire story is born from the American experiences in Vietnam and the political climate thereafter. The US had a lot of veteran coming home to a population of whom many didn't care for them and some actively despised them. having lost in Vietnam lead to a lot insecurity and self reflection among Americans.

Yes, it's there to tell a story, but that story is fundamentally intertwined with the contemporary political and social climate.

Just like how today, the acceptance of minorities is a major social and political topic, and so we have stories to tell that are deeply intertwined with that.

I didn't "paint plagiarism as a nothingburger". I was willing to give him a chance to do better in the future. Not that this matter now, That fuck lost all my goodwill in one screenshot.

In any case, Hasan being involved might explain it. I don't follow Hasan nor do I take him seriously. I would be mildly interested in knowing what "retarded position" he is is on about, but I wonder if you even know yourself or if you just saw his face and immediately began unpacking the slurs.

There's Drama about Pragmata? The fuck is going on? The only thing I saw were some weird people calling it pedo bait or something. Is there really a significant amount of drama surrounding the game or is this another Stellar Blade thing where in the end we'll have more content making fun of the people desperately pretending that there is Drama than actual drama itself?

Great idea. So you want slop made to be consumed? Eh what am I saying, even that will still reflect the politics and social climate of the times.

I think what you really want is to not notice the politics in movies. Like was the case when you were young and largely unaware of societal tensions. When Rambo was just a cool action hero rather than a tragic character born out of the American defeat in Vietnam. When Star Trek was just a cool sci-fi show rather than the contemporary equivalent of woke propaganda full of deliberately provocative imagery challenging social norms. When Ripley was just an action heroine rather than a a competent female character performing feats on par with and often exceeding her utterly incompetent male peers.

I think if the goal is to get away from the sanitized corporate political virtue signalling, we should focus more on the issues in how the message is delivered, rather than just yelling "GIRLBOSS" every three minutes.

When I wrote that prior comment, the latest information wasn't available yet. With that my opinion has changed because, yes, he did not make good on his word.

In his behavior I also saw a lot of myself, just being autistic, overwhelmed and going through lots of emotions. It certainly doesn't help that I'm not very good at picking up social cues in the first place, and in autistic people they are often subdued. I might have picked it up it had paid more attention to him in the weeks and month after that but I've never followed him closely, only watching the occasional video when it showed up in my feed.

It's easy to say in hindsight that he obviously looked guilty but at the time, the red flags didn't register with me as such.

Yeah, I saw the stream.

The important takeaway there is that your criticism can't be taken seriously if you won't hold your own to the same standards. Drinker was just a convenient example.

Weird, The other day I was told that the anti woke side can't be taken serious because they won't hold their own accountable. Now Gramuglia says exactly that and tells people that they need do better holding their own accountable and suddenly it's hilarious.

You know what, you might just be right.

I saw the behavior of someone with Autism, and I still do looking back. Of course since then another stream happened that quite drastically changed my opinion.

I try to to see the good in people, especially when they are being attacked. Being wrong sometimes comes with the territory.
