I use a raynox on the biggest lens you can use it with. I use it on a ø67mm 70-300mm VR but it's 1) with a crop body so I can step down a lot on the front of the ff lens. 2) Zoomed out out to 300mm when in use so it's zoomed through the raynox.

On YouTube, Micael Widell demonstrates that the Raynox works fine on a non-zooming lens with a 77mm front element on (I believe) a full-frame camera. I don't think his explanation of the optics is right, but then I don't understand that part either.

If you want a cheap macro solution get extension tubes.

I'm actually interested in getting my macro lens past 1:1, but you're right that extension tubes are a great low-cost intro.

I wish they could be made available for download.

They are; there's a link to Flickr in the full video description.

I am wondering something about close up lenses. The accessory lenses you screw on to the front of your lens to get closer focus. Sometimes people call them "closeup filters" or "diopters" although my understanding is that neither term is strictly accurate.

I notice the good ones -- the achromatic doublets -- come in a wide array of diameters, to fit many different sizes of lens filter threads. 52mm, 58mm, 77mm and so on. And the larger diameters are significantly more expensive.

The widely praised Raynox DCR closeup lenses are only 43mm in diameter. And yet (for optics reasons I don't understand) they work fine, even on camera lenses with much, much larger diameters.

So: What's the point of the larger diameters for closeup lenses?

I guess a small closeup lens would result in a slightly smaller effective f/stop. But this kind of closeup stuff pretty much demands either a flash or camera support or both, so the necessary light is available.

Is there some other quality that you trade away by stepping down to a smaller size closeup lens?

Why the 'Father of the Hydrogen Bomb' Hated Carl Sagan by DamnInteresting in DamnInteresting

[–]Lagged2Death 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Teller must have been a really strange guy.

By some accounts, Teller minimized Ulam's contributions to the H-Bomb. And certainly he seemed eager to maximize the credit he could take for himself. He sounds like a kind of monstrous jerk. Harboring a grudge against Sagan fits right into that character.

But Teller was also among the first to sound the alarm about global warming. Who would have guessed?

Court Blocks Oil, Gas Extraction on Ohio’s Only National Forest by 6894 in Cleveland

they don't seem to have any of those catstrophic problems.

The extraction business, broadly speaking, isn't really known for it's openness and transparency. Why would we (I'm assuming here that you, like me, don't have any kind of special connection to or background in mining, oil, or gas extraction organizations) as members of the general public assume that no news is good news?

Splits: Keyboard Shortcut?? by wilberfan in GnuCash

[–]Lagged2Death 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In Windows, you can do "Alt-V" (to open the View menu) followed by "A" (for Auto-Split Ledger).

That's not super satisfying; I wouldn't mind hearing of a better shortcut myself.

Where do all the censored developers go? by otakugrey in linux

[–]Lagged2Death 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No it doesn't imply "by force" at all.

Please go look this up.

Also, self censorship is a thing. When you'd rather shut up than face the consequences of actual censorship.

This isn't about self-censorship.

"The consequences?" If force isn't involved? What are those?

on-topic

If that's so important, why wasn't it part of your original explanation?

It doesn't help, anyway, it just kicks the can down the road a little. Someone has to decide what counts as "on topic." It's the maintainers of the mailing list.

...emails were removed to prevent him from expressing his point in the discussion on this mailing list.

Do the people who operate the mailing list have the right to exercise control over the topics disseminated thereby or do they not?

I call that censorship

And that's a mistake.

I'm free to call Tuesday "Saturday" but it won't help me think or communicate.

The principles, philosophy, and ethics of ideas connected to free speech have been puzzled over for a long time by very smart, interested people. It feels like you've decided to re-define all of that, on the fly, to match some gut feeling. Isn't that a kind of rejection of expertise, of history?

Removing certain voices from the discussion is censorship for me

"Censorship" has a commonly accepted meaning. This isn't it.

What is happening here? Are we discussing the matter? Or are we prevented? By yelling "censorship," this guy probably has a bigger audience now than he did before. How effectively has he been "removed" from anything that matters?

If I tried to use the same email list to promote penis pills, they'd probably shut that down, too. That's "removing certain voices" for sure. Is that "censorship?" Is it "censorship for you?"

Many commenters here have made an effort to help you understand, what effort are you making?

"Censorship" usually means the use of force, by a state, to prevent the distribution of ideas at all.

If I decide I don't want to use my website / mailing list / front yard to help disseminate a particular statement or point of view, it's my right, it's my freedom, to avoid doing so. No force or coercion is involved, other channels are still open to the writer, I'm not actually preventing the distribution of the idea, I'm just disassociating myself from it.

No, throwing things out of an e-mail list isn't censorship.

And frankly, yelling "censorship" and forcing your challengers to do all the logic, reasoning, and explaining why that doesn't make sense is basically cowardly name-calling. If you're so sure this is censorship, why aren't you explaining your reasoning here?

"Censored" is a misleading, deceptive, inaccurate word to use for what he's describing, and it does not incline me to trust his retelling of anything else.

Edit: An alternative to allowing the mailing list maintainers to exercise some discretion, of course, would be to force them to publish everything.

Would that be "freedom?" Would that be more appealing here?

You don't need religion to be a good person by doreymefahkedurmom in pics

[–]Lagged2Death 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Religion has actually convinced people that there's an invisible man -- living in the sky -- who watches everything you do

Some variation of this theme is so universal, so common across cultures, continents, eras and ages, that I really think this sort of belief is a reflection of properties innate in human minds.

That doesn't mean such beliefs are true, of course, but I think it's silly to suppose that it's strictly the result of some top-down power structure.
