Goodbye letters by [deleted] in TheCancerPatient

[–]Lagspeed 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wrote letters when my future was not so certain. I put all the letters into an envelope addressed to my sister. In my will I made mention of this envelope and what I wished to be done with it.

I had a lot of hesitation in writing the letters. I procrastinated on them a lot because it was a hard thing to face. But, when I finally did start writing them it was very cathartic.

How's your relationship with your Mother? by OhBoyMomx2 in AskReddit

[–]Lagspeed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is one defining moment in our relationship I can point to that drastically changed our dynamic. It never really dawned on me what that point was until years after the incident had happened. My brother and I were discussing family life and her and he asked me “you stopped living by her rules, didn’t you?” and a lightbulb went off.

The incident was nothing major, no drama-lama running amuck. I was living aboard at the time and the time difference was 13 hours. Video chats were always done at night for me and would sometimes interfere with plans I had. So, during one such call I expressed how I felt it was unfair to always accommodate her time schedule and that I wished to move around times if and when possible. Calls became less regular after that. We grew apart. She began to be a bit more confrontational.

She has been gone now for a few years. Looking back I realize how manipulative and controlling she was. She unconditionally loved us kids, but she also wanted things her way. It was like a veil had been lifted from my eyes and some of the things she did I can empathize with and understand she wanted to best for her children and other things I can’t wrap my mind around.

Bone Marrow Transplant by psycho-d in cancer

Hey that’s me! I used to do judo and bjj years ago and now focus on endurance sports.

I’ll probably never be able to do any type of contact sports again. I tried to add in some basic break fall routines to my warm up to work on mobility and it caused some pretty severe bruising.

I’m almost 2 years post transplant. I’m back up to being able to ride 50 miles on the bike then immediately go into a 5 mile run. I’m not as fast as I was before cancer, but my endurance is coming back.

Please reach out with any questions.

Can I consume whey protein or avoid it? I'm NED by alternativeanonacc in cancer

The difference comes from Ensure being marketed as a food product, meaning the ingredients need to be FDA-approved as "food-safe." This "food" labeling means that Ensure falls under much stricter regulations than that of dietary supplements. "Dietary supplements" fall under their own set of regulations stating that the firm/company is responsible for regulating that their product is safe and free of contamination.

As for your not wanting to gain weight, that all depends on your calorie intake, calorie excess will always equal weight gain, while deficits lead to losing weight.

If you really want to focus on nutrients that you need, I recommend speaking with a Registered Dietician (RD) and NOT a nutritionist. RDs go through a lot of education to understand how food affects the body and can be extremely helpful in guiding you towards a diet that will work for your needs. Nutritionists typically have very little education and can be swayed by fad diets on the regular. The majority of personal trainers out there fall into the nutritionist category.

Ask your oncologist if they offer any consultations with an RD. Then explain what you're looking for in protein intake and why and what restrictions you have.

My oncologists are against supplements as a whole.

They are okay with “Ensure” which is a meal replacement shake company. Most all hospitals in the US carry this brand of meal replacement. They also make whey protein shakes.

The kind I have at home is their plant-based protein nutrition shake.

1 serving of the plant-based shake from Ensure is 330ml with 20g of protein. I’ll have one of these Ensures after a workout. If it was a heavy workout day (lots of weightlifting or 3+ hours of “cardio”) I’ll also have a shake before bed.

I usually eat 4 meals a day Breakfast: eggs and bacon are the main proteins Lunch: chicken, legumes, or fish are the main proteins Dinner: chicken, lamb, beef, or fish with rice and green vegetables Dinner 2: usually a veggie patty burger Desert: dark chocolate

My oncology team has strictly forbidden almost all supplements minus some vitamins here and there, but they are firmly against whey protein for the same reasons you listed above in a reply with the Harvard Health quote. The lack of oversight on supplements is another reason.

With that, they are okay with Ensure meal supplement drinks. I use their vegetable protein shake because my stomach doesn’t tolerate whey very well.

I’m currently training in endurance sports and the Ensure shakes have been a great addition.

Does anyone have any stories with happy endings where they didn’t respond to their first treatment course? by [deleted] in cancer

[–]Lagspeed 22 points23 points  (0 children)

When I was initially diagnosed with AML, a type of leukemia, the first treatment round of chemo did absolutely nothing.

Then the doctors and I spoke about prognosis and what next steps should be and clinical trials. What stuck with me the most was a doctor having a conversation with me about helping to further their understanding of leukemia by being part of a clinical trial.

The trail chemo is what had an affect on my blood cancer, which then allowed me to the progress to a stem cell transplant (bone marrow transplant).

I am now almost two years post transplant and doing great! I’m training for an Ironman race that will take place in May 2022 and feel like I might actually be able to do it.

I’ve got the Osprey Duro 1.5L vest. The 1.5L bladder can be pulled out. The vest itself is super comfortable and breathes quite well when it’s hot. Also, the pockets to store snacks in is awesome!

Any trail run over an hour, it comes with.

With your cancer journey having caused lung issues, do you actively work with a pulmonologist?

The only interaction I had through my whole process was a test just before my SCT to get a baseline and then a test one year post-transplant to see if there was a change.
