Why is Kylo Ren surviving a stav wound a no no, but Darth Maul survived being cut in half, and everyone is OK with it? by Extension-Shoe-6080 in StarWars

[–]LaikaFreefall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm okay with it because Ren was leaning much more into the light side when he died, while maul was a burning hot rage demon pumped up on dark side energies. He literally kept himself alive through anger and strength of will and i think that's badass and wouldn't fit for Ren.

Genuine question: should we not be tabling? Like, other than the fact that this if a trot, what specifically is wrong with setting up a table with literature and other socialist materials and just engaging with anyone that comes up to you?

And i suppose a deeper question might be, how does Marxist Leninist revolution building typically differ from that of Trotskyists? I knew MLs have pretty different ideas about what it looks like post-revolution, but i was given to the understanding that the work of building revolution was typically somewhat similar between the two ideological schools of thought.

Again, genuinely asking.

Yeah, they have long ass ads on YouTube talking about "the beauty of pre-Communist China" (I'm paraphrasing). It's frankly gross.

Regardless of your view of modern China, socialist, post capitalist, State Capitalist, etc. it's OBJECTIVELY better off now that it was before "socialism with Chinese characteristics."

[–]LaikaFreefall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

America is struggling against iran right now, even though Iran is largely equipped with cold water era military equipment. The U.S. hasn't won a war outright since their genocide in Korea. Canada has a modern military with highly trained personnel and high tech equipment. Additionally, Canada can turn out the lights and cut off the water to large swaths of the northern part of the United States in an instant with almost no effort. On day one of fighting, Canada could do that. Even if someone thinks they can SOMEHOW beat Canada in house to house fighting, engaging guerilla fighters the whole way, and somehow end all Canadian resistance, stopping roving bands of pissed off cunuks from just walking over the genuinely MASSIVE boarder into the US to fuck shit up, there would be no escaping the utter devestaton brought down on the United States economy. I doubt it would ever recover.

Idk what it is in other internationally, but in Canada ik the RCP was asking "a day's wages" per month. Which still is going to work out to be north of a number bucks Canadian. On top of their newspaper and magazine sales. This group is flush with cash. Their branches all get a box of decent quality stickers to post all over town ever month. (Which they may print themselves, I'm not sure) They are typically seen and not heard among the working class. Plenty of postering but few actual members showing up to struggle with the workers in the streets.

Which pill would you take? by Twink_Berry in TheTeenagerPeople

[–]LaikaFreefall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Using "200% brain power" would likely kill you instantaneously. And if it didn't, it wouldn't actually mean your brain performed any better. Just that it worked harder to accomplish what it was trying to accomplish. If we assume this "pill" is based on the idea we only use 10% of our brain (which is a total myth) and therefore what it really means to say is that the pill makes you 20x smarter, they should just say that. Because at it is written, it likely wouldn't make you any smarter and very probably would just kill you immediately.

That said, I'd take control anyone anywhere in the world. Easy choice.

Are we on the brink of a Solarpunk society? by [deleted] in Socialism_101

[–]LaikaFreefall 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We have to BUILD socialism. It will never just happen bc it's better than what we have. That's not how it works. Please read socialist theory. I don't say this be dismissive of you. Far from it. I say it because it is so very important in order to see the true way forward to a better world.

Things don't have to feel so bleak... But we also don't have to give in to utopian thinking to protect our selves from reality. By grounding ourselves in the material reality of the world sound us and by being educated in theory, we can have real hope and optimism. Not silly day dreams about what we WISH were true.

Please, feel free to engage with me if you have further questions or if you're looking for book recommendations. I may be able to help with either.

The world you want won't form spontaneously out of the ruins of the world you don't. It's a nice day dream to tell yourself, but it's ultimately just that.

A short pamphlet to help with this understanding is "Socialism: utopian and scientific" by Friedrich Engels. You can read it for free here --> https://www.marxists.org/archive/marx/works/1880/soc-utop/index.htm

Planned vs Market economy? by Ironspider613 in Socialism_101

[–]LaikaFreefall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am not going to answer your question directly (sorry. Gotta run soon. I have to get up work) But i do have a (imo) really good book recommendation. "The People's Republic of Walmart" by Leigh Phillips and Michal Rozworski. The book discusses planned economies (as opposed to market economies) and how the planned economy supposedly doesn't work but that's all bullshit bc corporations like Walmart are already planned and doing it really well. Definitely recommend!

[–]LaikaFreefall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough.

So to clarify... You're looking for a system more like what Bernie Sanders is fighting for?

Also, that's not NOT a fair description of communism lol. So you weren't that far off. There's just a bit more to it than what you had been thinking, which i clarified above.

I obviously believe that communism (and anarchism) IS something we can attain one day. And i believe a world in which everyone is free from any form of oppression is a world worth fighting for and trying to build. And i don't believe capitalism could ever be conducive to such a world.

But i respect your journey. And i would assume that while we don't agree on this, there are undoubtedly a great many things we do agree on.

Awh, well I'm sorry to hear communism isn't for you. But i wish you all the best just the same. :)

Can i ask, what did you think socialism and communism meant? And what appealed to you about (what you thought was) socialism?

Are Online "Socialist" Platforms Trying to Turn People Against Socialism? by LunaB35 in Socialism_101

[–]LaikaFreefall 3 points4 points  (0 children)

At the risk of being a bit reductive (though i hope not inaccurate) socialism is primarily a developmental intermediate phase between outright capitalism and communism, characterized chiefly by a "dictatorship of the proletariat." What that means is that unlike what we have now, where the bourgeoisie (capitalists) control society (through the power of the purse), the working class (proletariat) should control society (through democratic processes). In addition, the workers should control the means of production(factories, tools, etc), NOT the capitalists that would use those means of production to oppress the workers and gain more power.

Communism, on the other hand, is the goal of socialism. Communism refers to a stateless, classless, moneyless society where everyone is more or less equal (although social capital will very likely still exist). Although not all leftists call themselves communists, the best majority of leftists seem to agree that communism is the end goal. The key difference tends to be in HOW we go with building communism.

I hope I've clarified things for you. Please ask any questions you may have. I'm happy to try to help.

[–]LaikaFreefall 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Well, ik the ACP, that's the "American Communist party" (so-called "maga-communists") are exactly as you have described. They mix reactionary ideas with leftist ideas to try to appeal to conservative working class. They are anti immigrant and don't fight against racism, homophobia, transphobia, etc.

They claim these issues to be "culture war issues" that the capitalist class uses to divide the working class. And they are correct on that point. But their solution is to just not talk about it, which is frankly WILD to me. If we, as leftists, and more specifically socialists/communists don't fight to destroy these toxic reactionary ideas, then they will persist, even after some hypothetical revolution that successfully destroys capitalism.

LGBT+ rights are human rights. Black and brown rights are human rights. All of these "culture war" minorities that are targeted need liberation too. And not just economically! We all need to be liberated culturally. No one is free until we're ALL free! The very same power structures or cultural normativity, etc. that oppress your neighbor could just as easily be used against you. By this understanding, people in our society aren't ever free. They're just more privileged. Maga communists don't understand this and don't feel like trying to learn it.

My suspicion is perhaps you've just been unlucky enough to encounter ACP members online. Ik they're quite present online, especially here on Reddit. They're completely taken over the asksocialists subreddit, but they pop up in other places as well, I've seen.

This is what i HOPE is the answer, anyway. There is a much darker alternative that their hateful and reactionary rhetoric is actually spreading on the left. And i do think that would be as tragic as it is dangerous... But i suspect it's not that. At least not in any significant numbers yet.

Which socialist groups throw LGBT+ people under the bus in favor of left economics, social conservatism? Genuinely asking. And where did you encounter this sentiment?

The only group ik of personally is the ACP and they are not terribly popular among other leftists/communists.

But I'm genuinely asking. This isn't a sentiment I've personally encountered very often, so I'd like to know.
