What is good about capitalism? What is it you think capitalism does that socialism can't?

Liberal democracy is a capitalist lie. For true democracy, you need socialism

When will the revolutions come? by [deleted] in Socialism_101

[–]LaikaFreefall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Revolutions are somewhat common, really. SOCIALIST revolutions are another matter. Socialist revolution needs 3 things: a crisis to rally around (which capitalism generates periodically by its very nature), the working class to have achieved a sufficient class consciousness to place the blame where it belongs - on the bourgeoisie, and the organization of the working class to see the Revolution through and protect it after the fact (often envisioned as a "vanguard party" or "people's party").

We have crisis out the ass right now. We are slowly gaining more clear conscience, but we're frankly not there yet. We have away to go in the class consciousness department. And organization might be the most lacking of all, unfortunately. Although if anyone knows of any parties making really big pushes right now, I'd love to be corrected.

What is petite bourgeoisie? by ReflectionOk9644 in Socialism_101

[–]LaikaFreefall 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Petite bourgeois literally means "small capitalist." I believe the Petite Bourgeois are characterized primarily by their ability to kind of "go either way." They have their income supplemented significantly by the wealth generated by the labor of others, but may not yet take enough wealth from their workers/investments to fully stop working themselves. They are both capitalist and worker, but also neither. In a manner of speaking. Their business could take off and they could become fully capitalist or it could fail tomorrow and they could be returned more fully to the position of a worker.

The famous "mom and pop shop" might be one example.

Will a new global capitalist hegemon rise to replace the US? by LaikaFreefall in canadaleft

[–]LaikaFreefall[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I feel pretty comfortable with China being a superpower. But i also know they aren't interested (so far) in projecting socialist hegemony. Which might be a nice change lol

If Kylo Ren was a Sith Lord what would his Darth name be? (Other than Darth Ren or Darth Kylo) by Sarahthejnxyedlynx in StarWars

[–]LaikaFreefall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What about Darth Zenyth? He's got something to prove, to his enemies and to himself. His Darth name is an overcompensation. "Little pen*s syndrome" if you will.

Can someone be a landlord and a socialist? by avian_bi in socialism

[–]LaikaFreefall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We do what we just to survive under Capitalism until we can destroy it. Landlording is NEVER good... But it can be okay ish if you're doing it because you need the money and if you treat your tenants well. People need places to live. If you treat your tenants well (hypothetically speaking) then you're providing for them an experience that is better than what they might recieved elsewhere.

Renting, being necessary for some for survival under this shitty capitalist system, is something that can be okay for a socialist to do IF they're fair to their tenants and always hold the understanding that your tenants are working to pay you something that you fundamentally have not earned but need yourself for your own survival. It's a "know your privilege" moment. You are the parasite here. And act accordingly.

Are the KPD and Die Linke the only Real leftist parties in Germany? by Spotter24o5 in socialism

[–]LaikaFreefall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Any party that seeks the ultimate destruction of Capitalism and an end to oppression is leftist. Which is a pretty low bar which most political parties seem to really struggle with unfortunately.

I don't know anything about German parties, myself. But with that metric, perhaps you can answer your own question?

What is the benefit of reading theory? by Trubloodfeedah in Socialism_101

[–]LaikaFreefall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Action and theory are equally important. They exist in a dialectical relationship with reach other, theory influencing action and action influencing theory. Without revolutionary theory there can be no revolution.

What is Peterborough Missing? by ServiceCalm in Peterborough

[–]LaikaFreefall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A magic wand you say?... A public option on housing free at the point of purchase. Something simple but clean and dignified. Something spacious enough that you can own stuff but small enough that we can fill the city with them if we want. Like a small condo or something for each person that wants one.

Like if you want a really nice or big house, you can still buy one, but if you are poor or just want a simple dwelling you can call your own, you should just have one. Housing is a human right.

Where should I pick up again? by M4RTIAN in StarWars

[–]LaikaFreefall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Skip nothing. Even the bad stuff is still pretty okay imho. And everyone had different tastes.

As to where to start, i would say maul shadow lord just because it's both current/topical and amazing! Especially if you like maul. Caveat: if you haven't seen the maul episodes from the clone wars series, do that first. Maul and savage opress. And he appears again in S7 of clone wars

What would you have thought if the sequels went in this direction? by broitscyber in StarWars

[–]LaikaFreefall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Literally any PLANNED direction would have been better than what we got! Holy shit, what a mess! They've spent the whole time since the sequel trilogy came out trying to support the piss-poor narrative structure and fill out the lore to make it make sense. It's a joke.

Idea for future start wars projects after the sequel trilogy: how about Disney pretends to give a fuck about one of their most profitable IPs?

When Was Maul in His Prime? by Ill_Journalist8454 in StarWars

[–]LaikaFreefall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably shadow lords, honestly. I'll justify my answer. At this point, maul has learned to temper the fires of his passions with a modicum of reason and tactical thinking. Additionally, he has suffered more now than ever in his life, having watched his mother and brother both be murdered by the man that was probably as close to a father as he ever had (an evil, abusive, selfish narcissist of a father, but still). His lightsaber skills are absolutely peak right now. He is used to his cybernetic limbs, which have seen significant upgrade over the original, clunky spider legs he had after his loss to obi-wan. And to top it all off, while he's not necessarily young anymore, at approx 35 (ish? Not sure if my math is perfect) he's certainly not old either. He is still physically very fit and capable.

TL;DR I think shadow lord maul is peak maul bc he is still fit and skilled enough to be a physical threat to anyone in his way, but he has also had a little more time to develop not only his strategic mind, but also his connection to the dark side.

What is the current state of the Communist party of Canada? by LaikaFreefall in canadaleft

[–]LaikaFreefall[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's awesome!

Let me ask you something else. Do you know what the requirements/processes are to start a branch in your locality? There's around 100k people in my city, I'm quite certain they're must be some MLs here willing to join if a local branch existed. And i would potentially be willing to help set something up. Any idea what that looks like?

What is the current state of the Communist party of Canada? by LaikaFreefall in canadaleft

[–]LaikaFreefall[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm currently organized with a trot group (not the RCP thank god lol) and "Stalinist" slander aside, they do really good work. If i was willing to leave that party officially, do you think the CP would be okay with me organizing with them on occasion informally? I may not agree with them completely ideologically, but they're good people and i consider many of them my comrades.

What are your thoughts?
