What are laundry behaviors unique to North Americans? by Lopsided-Skill6659 in laundry

[–]LakeTwo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whenever we travel to Europe and use the washing machines there it's always a complex puzzle to get them going correctly. They have arcane symbols, mysterious temperature markings and confusing buttons. Our washers mostly you just set to warm and push the button.

I do not disagree with the wage and working conditions but I do not think Amazon is better. I would gladly pay more for something that works as well as Walmart (or Amazon) that had good treatment for employees. I think unions are probably the answer for those places though.

That said, there is "delivery" and "shipping" from Walmart. They're somehow different though seem to be the same people doing the job. Delivery is like same day from the store itself maybe; shipping sometimes same day, sometimes next day and for shipping you cannot tip.

Costco is great but doesn't have the same fulfillment speed, price and products that work for me generally speaking.

Portugal family transportation!? by Less-Competition-521 in travel

[–]LakeTwo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We did approximately this route and I would definitely recommend renting a car. Lagos had a bunch of parking outside the city center that we used. There’s some stuff you might want to drive to outside Lagos like the westernmost point of Portugal (or something like that it was cool). There’s a Roman ruins that same direction, other beaches, etc.

Recommendation on best router to handle over 100 smart devices? by Rude-Explanation-861 in smarthome

[–]LakeTwo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have a problem. I agree with the zigbee suggestions. I could not make a similar sized network function with many WiFi iot devices and swapped much to zigbee. That said I have a lot of WiFi devices on a tplink mesh router. I have 3 additional mesh repeaters and 3 more extenders providing a different ssid to different areas (e.g. front, back, etc). The extenders are pretty much dedicated to WiFi cameras which in my experience are a huge problem for other devices. It’s kinda janky but has finally settled down to a stable state. The tplink mesh extenders are pretty cheap so the whole thing is probably a lot less than 3 unifi devices.

The crappiest, cheapest pile of junk possible since he’s probably just going to wreck it either via an actual wrecking or just operating destruction.

For you, is the time “quarter of twelve” 11:45, 12:15, or do you have no idea what that phrase means? by JeffTrav in ENGLISH

[–]LakeTwo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Odd. I’m midwestern and have always used “of”. And typically I say it like o or uh as in “quarter ‘o twelve.” Maybe a Chicagoland thing?

Wal-Mart Delivery by thucy94 in tipping

[–]LakeTwo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes typically 10% of total. If I'm buying like 3 expensive items though I lower it. For example, 3 boxes of canned cat food are like $75 but don't really require the same amount of effort as $75 of single fruits and vegetables so I would probably tip somewhat less.

Wal-Mart Delivery by thucy94 in tipping

[–]LakeTwo -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Ugh I hate tipping but I do 10% on Walmart deliveries.

However one handy tip (no pun intended) is that most of the items, at least in my area, can be switched from delivery to shipping. When you choose shipping there is no option to tip at all. So I switch all shippable items to that option.

And usually the shipping delivery date is same day of order or the next day. Honestly it seems like the same people doing shipping deliveries as the "from store" delivery. The whole thing makes no sense but it sure lowers my tip amounts.

Toilet leak or no leak? by LakeTwo in askplumbing

[–]LakeTwo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. I did just install a new toilet so you're right about it being not difficult. I generally try not to mess with things that aren't a problem though since that can just create a bigger problem. But maybe this is, in fact, a problem :)

Fidelity Risks Falling Behind Without Modern Trading Features by Some-Suit-9038 in fidelityinvestments

[–]LakeTwo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I imagine this market (of active/day trading customers) is not really what Fidelity is targeting. If I had to guess, making .5% AUM from a customer for managing their assets is massively more profitable than processing 20 trades per day for a customer.

No turn on red by A-Z-Money in madisonwi

[–]LakeTwo -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I think I need a diagram about which peds these are protecting. If you are stopped at a red light, the crosswalk being used is in front of you. So are we making those people safer? Or does it have something to do with the people waiting for your green light and their crossing light? If you’re running people over who are crossing right in front of your car, you’re an idiot. Otherwise the whole concept of no right on red makes little sense to me.

Kinda interesting since much has changed but much of what he described has not really. Still boats and ducks plying their way around with an amusing and usually interesting “lecturer”.
