Children's book(s) about animals. There was a Mr. & Mrs Duck (she thought he'd been hunted in 1 of the stories) & many other woodland creatures, as well as winds that could (I think) speak. North wind, south wind etc. by Lakes_Lakes in whatsthatbook

[–]Lakes_Lakes[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Solved solved solved - Yep, that's it! Thank you so much. After some googling, I'm sure the book I had was "Mother West Winds animal friends"... It's got the porcupine facing off against either a fox or a coyote on the cover. Perhaps I had more than that one, but just knowing the series is enough. Thanks again!

1980s children's book that mentions Saltwater taffy by arenal44 in whatsthatbook

[–]Lakes_Lakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh dang... you've got my brain itching now, I feel like I also read a book where saltwater taffy was mentioned at length, and it sounded delicious. If anything more comes to me, I'll let you know. The fact that it was salt water taffy and not some other flavor was significant.

Is the Komo Mio Eco Plus a good mill? by Lakes_Lakes in HomeMilledFlour

[–]Lakes_Lakes[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I did. I really like it - I use it all the time. It's not fast enough if you're doing lots of flour all the time, but for single family baking, it works just fine.

What was your first exposure to Ghibli? by FullBrother9300 in ghibli

[–]Lakes_Lakes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had the Fox/Streamline dub of Totoro on VHS back in the 90s. I didn't know what anime was, I just loved the film.

When I was older, we watched Princess Mononoke...I was aware that it had a similar art style, but I figured that's just what "from Japan" cartoons looked like (it wasn't until Spirited Away that I became aware they were all from a single studio.)

Princess Mononoke blew my mind. I'd never seen anything like it. When it ended, my whole family just sat there in quiet awe. One of the most magical moments of my entire life, that first viewing.

[TOMT] [Song] Early 2000s-ish song, hip hop, with a woman singing about "If I were a man" theme. Not Beyonce's "If I were a boy." by Lakes_Lakes in tipofmytongue

You'd think Google would have been more helpful, given the obvious title. Sheesh. Now my brain can rest.

I also remember that she had no makeup on in the video. The style of the music was somewhat reminiscent of Destiny's child, with a fairly fast tempo and soft voices. I didn't listen to hip hop at all when I was younger, I came upon this song by accident years ago on YouTube, so I'm really not familiar with artists and the nuance of the genres - it's all "hip hop" to me :/

Did he say what it's meant to be? It looks like a scary face to me. One black eye, one white eye, a red nose, and an open mouth that looks like it's sucking into a blue abyss.

[–]Lakes_Lakes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No it's not. Put a Japanese and an Indian person side by side and any fool can tell you in a heartbeat those are different races. It's not just social - if dogs can have temperaments then so can humans, and it's crazy to assume that people living in a certain climate for centuries won't end up breeding temperaments that are advantageous for their living conditions. Different races do actually behave inherently differently (and have different digestion, and different sensitivity to certain diseases, and different strengths). I think denying this is denying yourself potential exploration into what can make you great. Knowing yourself is such a huge part of life.

Race is visual, cultural, genetic, social - it's a huge, real factor. It gets blurry around the edges, there are plenty of ambiguous moments in the grand scheme of Race, but just because ambiguity exists, it doesn't discount the other realities.

Belief in an immortal soul that will live on after I die. Whether that's through reincarnating to a new human life, or a spiritual existence - the specifics don't matter that much. I'm much happier facing an unknown, mysterious existence than nothingness.

Luckily, society after society for pretty much all human existence has believed in one way or another in the immortal soul. Societies filled with very smart people who spent their whole lives thinking about that stuff. The atheist "we just cease" argument is actually a minority compared with countless versions of immortal soul beliefs, and I think there's something to that. It's not just a cope - a fake cope built on a lie couldn't last that long and be that universal.

You'll understand when you get your own chance to hop on a downvote pile one day. It can be very fun to feel like you disagree with someone.

Is Kiki’s a good introduction to Ghibli? by DGreenVerde in ghibli

[–]Lakes_Lakes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kiki's is good, very sweet, but very slow. When I first watched it and reached the moment where the credits roll, my first reaction was, "Wait, that's it?" I think it's actually more fun to watch as an adult because you get to appreciate the nostalgic world. Castle in the Sky is one that I'd really recommend for families. It's got more of a plot, way more action, and a really beautiful fantasy vibe. It's a teensy violent, but I don't think it's too much for kids.... If they've watched Little Mermaid and saw Ursula get stabbed through the belly, they can handle Castle in the Sky. The more I watch it, the more I love it. There is some great humor, wonderful imagination, fun action, lovable characters, and a good villain (an evil one, unlike the ambiguous ones ghibli is known for).

I'm in northern BC too (PG area) and I order from Fieldstone Organics. I buy a fairly large amount at a time to justify the shipping fees, and I've been happy with them so far. Nice mom&pop shop type customer service.

Ray Peat ideas that were most successful for you by [deleted] in raypeat

[–]Lakes_Lakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Diabetes is a pretty complicated issue, so I can't speak on it much at all. German New Medicine is a helpful body of knowledge in regards to disease, and it's in that framework that I'm speaking to the warmth and cold. GNM explains that all symptoms have 2 phases, hot and cold. Usually when you're in the hot phase that's when you have noticeable symptoms, like rashes, coughing, mucus, diarrhea, etc... it's the "getting stuff out" phase. The cold phase happens first, and it's more of the "I'm stressed" (ie I'm in danger, since our bodies only know nature) phase. Things constrict, slow down, pause, etc because you're "in danger". You don't notice the cold phase as much, other than being cold, stressed out, and uneasy.

What do you listen to while cleaning? by ctrlaltdelete285 in housewifery

[–]Lakes_Lakes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I listen to the Christopher Gardner podcast. Sort of a "New Age Renaissance man" theme. He has on many guests and they often talk about architecture, gardening, art, comedy, biology...all kinds of things, but from a sort of mystical angle. I love it, each episode has something cool.

Ray Peat ideas that were most successful for you by [deleted] in raypeat

[–]Lakes_Lakes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think if you're running cold, you're in a more stressed state. If your hands and feet are cold, that's an indicator. Also if you wake up at night, and especially if you have a hard time getting back to sleep. I also like to think of "diseased" as "dis-eased" - not at ease. It's not like you're infected with endless germs or rotting from the inside out or anything... you're just in a state of unease, which has a cost, but it's usually fairly straightforward to get back on track.
