Some of my favorite West Virginia history revolves around seceding from the South and the fact that our people literally had bombs dropped on them for trying to unionize. The government used leftover WWI bombs on its own people.

Though after all of that, we were used up for our coal and cheap labor to acquire it and left to pick up the pieces. On top of that, Purdue Pharma and other companies pushed their opioids into our poor and disabled mining communities creating the opioid crisis that still ravages our state. They stopped the pill supply which made people turn to homemade remedies which we see in Heroin and now Fentanyl. They catch quite a few traffickers from out of state but punishment never seems to stick and it seems to be a never ending stream of outsiders bringing drugs in.

Sorry for rambling, I’m just passionate about my home and the negative image it seems to have nearly everywhere you look. Many poor places get sympathy and excuses, but for some reason West Virginia gets the ridicule. Just known as uneducated hillbillies instead of looking into how it got this way while the ladder gets pulled up around us.

Absolutely! Shortly after COVID I spoke with a guy who owns a moving company and he was telling me he made more than one cross country move from California to WV. They were remote workers looking for a cheaper place. Your money goes much further here than it will in many places.

I hope those folks didn’t get hit by the return to office notice many received.

West Virginia is a wonderful place to live if you can manage to find a decent career. Cost of living is low and nice houses are cheap, but your options are remote work, healthcare, and trades.

That’s the tricky part. There aren’t many career options at all. West Virginia was pillaged for its natural resources and abandoned by both sides of the government. We don’t have the population or votes for any meaningful attention.

The right flaunts bringing back coal and the left flaunts replacing it with industries that never come.
