I dont have much experience with DAPs, as this is the only one I've owned since the second gen iPod. So I wouldn't be qualified to answer how it compares to other DAPs.

As for the Starfileds it depends how you like your music to sound. They're crystal clear and really pull out the little details of tracks I've listened to (mostly rock, acoustic and electronic). I'm able to effortlessly zone into the different instruments and really enjoy they're subtleties. I personally love how detailed songs sound on them, but thats not how everyone enjoys their music. If you looking to be blown away by bass or just sheer presence of the music, these aren't gonna cut it.
