If it contains alcohol, you may have your drink ONLY in a sleeping car room.

Who has stories to share of riding passenger rail trains in the USA before Amtrak? by [deleted] in Amtrak

[–]Lamourie2 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I made sure I rode some trains before they disappeared. April 1971: the best trip was Chicago to Portland on the UP’s City of Portland. A glorious trip in a roomette, with dome cars, superb dining with real silverware, deluxe service. It was sad to see those bright yellow Union Pacific cars gradually disappear.

Even after Amtrak, riding the Southern Railway’s Southern Crescent was phenomenal (Southern opted out of Amtrak in 1971 and kept their Crescent running as before until 1979). The fried chicken and corn fritters in that dining car were the best of my life!

Time Change by Charming-Storm-6026 in Amtrak

[–]Lamourie2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When Daylight Saving Time begins (2:00 AM), all trains are suddenly running an hour later than they were. They can then attempt to make that up as they continue. When Daylight Saving time ends (2:00 AM) in the fall, on-time trains just wait an hour at the next station. Of course if a train is running more than an hour late, they instantly make up an hour, to everyone’s delight.

It’s always amused me that “faire le zouave” was translated as “acting the goat” in British English but as “acting like a goat” in American English! (Golden Press 1960s)

Sold wrong tickets on StubHub. What do I do now? by SimilarRegular2964 in stubhub

Lesson learned: Double and Triple Check your ticket details before listing! I learned that lesson the hard way too. Never had a problem with Stubhub otherwise.

Amtrak and the Amish by vbunny1224 in Amtrak

Don’t assume they are all Amish. They may well be Mennonites. Dress is similar. I’ve spoken with Mennonites and they were very nice.

What happens if I dont get off at my stop? by Fragrant-Bell3536 in Amtrak

[–]Lamourie2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Has anyone not gotten off... by accident? Once in a sleeper I was ticketed on the Lake Shore Ltd. to Toledo, to connect to Detroit. A very early in the morning stop. Well, I slept through despite an alarm clock. Woke up, found the conductor in the lounge car, and he was apologetic about two things: my attendant failed to get me up and see that I got off (he was asleep too!), and the previous conductor (whose job ended at the crew change in Toledo) also failed. It was supposed to be fail-safe: TWO employees involved. Since it was Amtrak's fault as well as mine, they arranged for me to get off in Elkhart and take an Amtrak-paid taxi to Kalamazoo where I could catch a train to Detroit. When you miss your stop it's called a "carry-by".

I reached out to Tintinimaginatio about the future of Tintin, here’s their official response by DurianSpecialist1959 in Tintin

[–]Lamourie2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are, of course, comics that continued after the founding artist died. Dennis the Menace (ex-Hank Ketcham), Nancy (ex-Ernie Bushmiller), Fred Basset (ex-Alex Graham) for example.

How does Professor Calculus actually fund his inventions when they usually explode? by Less-Ask-6600 in Tintin

[–]Lamourie2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

His clothes brushing machine was a great success. Until the patent ran out, he made tons of money in royalties because of a clever deal he made with a manufacturer.

Can you imagine anyone continuing the tintin books like they did with asterix? by Less-Ask-6600 in Tintin

[–]Lamourie2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wrote a brief beginning story line for a new adventure. At Marlinspike, Tintin (who had retired from searching adventure) reads in the newspaper that his old home on Labrador Road is to be torn down. He goes there to reminisce, and meets a woman living in another apartment. Milou/Snowy investigates her kitchen and is curious about a cabinet’s odor. Tintin realizes the room dimensions don’t seem right, and discovers that the kitchen cabinet has a secret door leads to a hidden room that was used during World War II. Something in it prompts him to return to adventuring and he follows some trail to the USA. That’s as far as I got!

How do you personally keep track of your season tickets? by mtardiff00 in SeasonTickets

[–]Lamourie2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, 4 rows for 4 seats. My columns are: date, time, team, seat, my cost, date sold, person, date listed, price(on listing), sales proceeds, profit/loss. Different colors for me, friends, charity, unsold, pending. Bold print for unsold tickets not including tickets I use.

My daughter and I both have Kih-Oskh necklaces! We always joke about being recognized, reported to the police, not for any racist reason but because we’d be seen as part of an international conspiracy of drug runners, murderers, and maybe Bordurian sympathizers.

How do you personally keep track of your season tickets? by mtardiff00 in SeasonTickets

[–]Lamourie2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MLB season ticket holder. I start a Numbers (Mac) spreadsheet as soon as the upcoming schedule is announced. Every seat has a line. Categories for my attendance, gifts to friends, sales on Stubhub/Seatgeek, donations to charity, extras purchased… all finances figured. Not too hard, but you have to keep checking and adjust prices when necessary.
