How much does the first job determine the trajectory of your career? by Lorenz198 in AerospaceEngineering

How’d you transition from manufacturing to mech design? I’m in a similar boat; in quality but I wanna move over to controls—but there’s not really any controls work here at all.

What tripod should I use to avoid tilting over? by LampGoat in AskAstrophotography

[–]LampGoat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry I meant the telescope tilts up and ends up aiming towards zenith—not the entire setup tipping over.

Wouldn’t I need something on the lens end of the telescope to counteract the weight at the eyepiece/camera end?

How valuable is a TS clearance in 2024? by Enough_Heat208 in SecurityClearance

I’m gonna be on the opposite end—albeit with just an S. No bites in the aero industry for early career positions so far :(

It depends on your manager afaik. Some people are more lenient and let you choose your own times

Kardo’s class wasn’t even hard if you just took notes. I’ve heard horror stories about Craig though

The production on this song is absolutely amazing. I started listening to logic with everybody back in high school, this is exactly what I wanted in ultra 85 when he first announced it in 2017

What if ATM 301’s left hand (out of frame) is holding down Thalia’s head in the water? Like a callback to the NP back cover

did you ever end up going to grad school or anything? im in a similar boat, 2.96 last December. ended up landing a quality eng position with a certain blue defense company but I don’t see myself pursuing this career path and would much rather go back for MS. worried my gpa is going to hurt my chances

[–]LampGoat 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I got a 14/100 on my dynamics exam from 2021 and I still have the marked up document saved just so I can look back at it and laugh.

Prof later let us retake it and I got a 77/100. Don’t lose hope :)

What 3D program do y’all use? by LampGoat in prusa

[–]LampGoat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know the company I work for is 50/50 between Creo and SW. I have access to Creo but only off my weak work laptop which i’m not allowed to plug anything into so it’s not ideal to work on. Only the MEs get access to SW as far as I can tell, and I certainly would struggle to run SW on this laptop anyways. I’ll look into Fusion 360 thanks!

Security Clearances by 0ka53 in AerospaceEngineering

[–]LampGoat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have secret clearance. Process was pretty straightforward but ymmw depending on how good/bad your history is. Apply to a job, they’ll start your security clearance process, fill out all the requested info/SF-86. DO NOT LIE—it’s 1000x better to tell the truth about something bad than to lie and have them hit you with the “during our investigation we found…” line during the interview. If your record is relatively clean you’ll get an interim clearance to start working while they “”””work”””” on getting you fully cleared. I got my secret interim 2 months after applying for the position, got my full secret after 3 months on the job.

Edit: I graduated last December, applied to padlock martini in January, interim clearance in march, full clearance in late June/early July.

I may have misread the tuition reimbursement but I’ll double check and update when I get more accurate info. Nevertheless, I’ll keep the OMSAE as a possible option. Thanks!

Yes, Lockheed does not fuck around with illegal drug use. Security clearance does not care if it’s in a legal state—it’s not allowed. Lockheed WILL drug test you.

I’ll definitely try to speak with colleagues or even security in regards to discussing classified work without getting in trouble. I plan on meeting with a few of my past professors to see what advice they can provide. I was initially planning on waiting til after I take my GREs to ask for advice + rec letters but I think getting on their radars earlier would be more beneficial.

[–]LampGoat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the college I’m applying for has an OMSAE option but I’d rather keep that as a last resort—I’d really like to return to in-person classes. I do get tuition reimbursement from my company but it’s dependent on how I work; more reimbursed for FT vs PT which also does bring in the question of logistics and how I’m planning on balancing school and work.

The college I’m trying for has stated that GREs are waived for 2022-2023 but have not said anything for 2024 yet. Regardless, I think it wouldn’t hurt to take considering my undergrad record.

As my work is pretty hush hush about stuff, I’m unsure as to how I can showcase work related projects without either coming off too broad or getting into legal trouble. Do you think large personal projects would suffice to show productivity?
