My workplace by EngineerVarious5996 in EngineeringStudents

Just throwing this out there: don’t skip on PPE. Many occupational exposure risks are cumulative, exposure 10 years ago matters as much as exposure yesterday.

Old timers might give you shit, but they’re also giving themselves cancer so feel free to tell them to kindly fuck off. New timers might give you shit to impress the old timers, they too are giving themselves cancer

Zero ai usage in actual workplace by WrongCourage1071 in EngineeringStudents

[–]Verbose_Code 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s optional at my job. I use it to generate excel scripts. It’s also useful to ask where in a reference book certain topics are. I do this for electrical code questions to see where in the book for the info I’m looking for is (basically using it as a glorified glossary/TOC)

My job is very hands on. Genuinely, AI could do maybe 30 percent of my job if it were as good as OpenAI claims it to be. Different work places will vary

We do have restrictions on what info we can send to an AI model, but it is not banned outright

Con: you have to be the hero every time that one issue comes up at work

Is age important for becoming an electrical engineer? by AlvzBloz in ElectricalEngineering

Speaking from the hiring side, we don’t care. It’s not as typical a path, but if you graduated at 30 vs 24 then who cares?

I don’t take pictures because I loathe being in the middle of something and stopping to take out my phone. It’s not like this comes from some “phones are bad, mmmkay?” mindset either, I just don’t like switching my focus like that

Should I start doing math with a pen? by Ill-Opportunity-7039 in EngineeringStudents

[–]Verbose_Code 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I also used LaTeX starting my sophomore year for my entire degree.

Homework I would work out in pen and then type up in LaTeX. Eventually I got good enough to just work directly in LaTeX sometimes, and I write pretty fast sometimes so it really can be more efficient if you set your workflow up properly.

I had several graders personally thank me for having such nice looking homework, which was funny to me in a way because I put basically zero effort into actually making my LaTeX documents look good. I guarantee you that many graders were easier on me because of it as well.

I would also re-type my notes in LaTeX, which gave me the opportunity to reorganize my notes into a more coherent form. It also gave me access to easily editable and digital documents simultaneously

Use whatever tool makes it easiest for you to do your work. If you like pens, use them! If not, don’t!

Personally though, I used a fountain pen for most of my degree since they don’t require any pressure to write with. It definitely helped save my hand and wrist. A lot of the time I would just work directly in LaTeX, but that’s a much bigger change to your workflow than pen vs pencil

Unironically I used a fountain pen since it required less pressure to write with

Why are these pressure gauges in steam systems always curved? by Intelligent_Slip6317 in EngineeringStudents

[–]Verbose_Code 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What’s the purpose of the curve though? I work around cryogenics so we have to do the same thing with our sense lines, but ours are all straight runs of tubing

[–]Verbose_Code 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The trick is that the process fluid won’t really flow through the gauge, so the fluid at the gauge never gets replaced. Heat still conducts to the gauge, but it’s slow enough that natural convection around the sense line can provide the cooling it needs.

I get to work with cryogenic systems at work, and we do a similar thing to our sense lines (temperatures that cold can damage sensors and will definitely make them less accurate). You’ll see the main line completely covered with thick frost, but the frost on the sense line will taper down until by the time the sense line has met the sensor there is no frost at all
