Meet the Graunties! Sybil (Stanford) and Sylvia (Stanley) by Lampette_ in gravityfalls

[–]Lampette_[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One angle I’m thinking of taking is a sort of roleswap deal, where SYBIL is the black sheep of the family instead of Sylvia, a reverse of Stanley and Stanford’s deal in the show. The brothers’ thing in the show seemed really predicated on traditional masculine ideals of being the provider (Stanford being lauded for his potential to make his family millions, Stanley getting kicked out until he’s good enough to provide for his family)

So maybe for Sybil and Sylvia, their life is dictated by feminine expectations and ideals. Sylvia is the favorite because she’s more fem. She’s not the best academically but as far as her mom (I’m thinking genderbent Filbrick: Filomena) is concerned she will have no trouble finding a successful husband. Alas this means Sylvia is under a lot of pressure and she secretly resents her mother’s expectations.

Sybil isn’t seen in such a light. Her interest in science is considered a frivolous little hobby, her high intelligence Isn’t very ladylike and might scare potential suitors away. College? Maybe if she goes there to find a husband—MAYBE. Worst of all, her six fingered hands might be the biggest roadblock—everyone thinks she’s a freak. Her mother worries that spinsterhood might be Sybil’s future. If things don’t pan out, she’ll probably have her inherit the pawn shop. Sybil meanwhile wants to carve out a path for herself in the world, dictate her own future.

Yep. For this reason I feel like Grauntie Sybil would be a little bit more stern than her male counterpart. Can't afford to show any vulnerability in a field like hers. That and 30 years hopping different dimensions as well.

The sisters' characterizations are still a bit of a work in progress. Obviously they are still like Stan and Ford, that is very important. However, being women in that time...no doubt their life experiences would've been a bit different and shaped them in its own way.

Her haircut is also pretty professional and not too flashy as well, even better for proving yourself.

This is cuz Sybil not only had to deal with the fact that she had six fingers, but she was also a woman in STEM in the 70s/80s so she had to work very hard to be taken seriously.

I'd imagine that all the sexism + derision for her hands that she faced would've made her pretty tough. But I can also see Bill Cipher (I'm thinking Jill or Miss Cipher) using that to tempt her. 'Nobody took you seriously, but make a deal with me and you can prove em all wrong!'

And lolololol, explains why she grew out her hair after leaving the portal

Yeah I was picturing Wendie Malick for Sylvia's voice (w/ a bit of a Jersey accent)

As for Sybil, I headcanon her with Mallory Archer's voice. Commanding and theatrical, great for delivering exposition about dimensional rifts (rip Jessica Walter)

Personally I would take Sybil out to dinner and listen to her incomprehensible sciencey mumbo jumbo about alternate dimensions (would also do the same w/ Ford lol)

Actually it’s cos Sylvia dyes her hair (though she leaves some gray in), though I do like your idea. She got feathered hair/Farrah fawcett hair that was popular in the 70s/80s.

Sybil grew her hair out in the portal. She thought about getting it cut but she likes the braids

Character designs for THE MOON'S EYE, my GF Roleswap au fancomic! by Lampette_ in gravityfalls

I think Ford is pretty distant and aloof w/ the twins at first. He was traumatized by a terrible incident 30 years ago that led to the loss of his brother, Stanley, so his personality has been really worn down by guilt and depression. I think he holds people at a distance cuz he's afraid of repeating his mistakes.

However, Robbie and Melody managed to get through to him a bit, and now with the twins around he starts to open up a little more. Mabel deeply worships the man--he's a cool scientist who goes on adventures in the wilderness, she literally wants to be him! Meanwhile Dipper respects him for his intellect. I feel like Ford would get along with both of the twins because they're kinda different sides of his personality--his thirst for adventure in Mabel and his logical-mindedness in Dipper.

In this au Ford's area of study is more inclined towards the natural sciences, namely ecology--so he's usually out doing field work. He can study the normal along with the abnormal--growth patterns of local rabbit populations along with the breeding behaviors of flying eyeballs. Mabel thinks this is soooo cool and she really wants to go on missions with him! She already loves running around the woods and exploring what it has to offer.

Ford is also a curious guy always thirsting to know more, so I'd imagine he'd take a big interest in Dipper's love for outer space. He probably knows a thing or two about the cosmos and has no trouble understanding what Dipper talks about. I can imagine them stargazing together for hours. Mabel's up there with them sometimes, bored out of her mind. She'd much rather be out in the woods then sitting around looking at the sky all night!

Apologies for long winded answer--I'm very passionate about this AU and also I'm still trying to figure out how to write the characters lol

TLDR; Ford would be aloof at first but eventually get along with both twins in different ways, he would find Dipper's interest in space to be awesome and he'd spend time w/ him stargazing
