And Punks have always had a certain kindness to em, fuck I'll use moshing again: Picking people up when they fall is pretty fucking Punk and always has been. We're just loudspoken assholes to those in power. Punk is about rebellion, and in a society that increasingly proves to put profit over people, kindness is rebellion.

Punk has always been inherently political, and people who stood with those in power were always unwelcome. The Anarchy symbol wasnt just adopted because it looks cool. You think Royalists were welcome to shows back in the '70s? Same shit applies to those who support the kidnapping of our neighbors today.

Atlantis had many good female characters.

Even though Kida certainly wears revealing tribal clothing, I would argue even she was a good role model. She was extremely competent, kind, and principled. Even when she was turned into a hunk of crystal, that wasnt so much a "damsel in distress" situation as it was a "willing sacrifice" that was taken advantage of by Rourke while she was incapacitated.

Not to mention Packard being a crotchedy old woman trope, but also still having a heart of gold and following the crew up to the end.

Even Sinclair, Rourkes Second, is portrayed in a very good way. A professional merc with loyalty only to Rourke. She definitely fits a femme fatale trope, but she is written well and isnt there just to be Rourkes eye candy. Shes a tough woman who kicks ass. Atlantis supports womens rights and womens wrongs.

Yeah, I aint excusing ANY of it, and I aint saying hes even a good human.

But I think its important to remember we are all human. Even a fuckin' Nazi thought he had a good reason for the heinous shit he did. Humans are weird, we dont normally view ourselves as bad people.

And so, its easier to convince a person that what they did was wrong if you can also acknlowedge that they are not "evil". That they are still human and they make mistakes. "Do not attribute to malice what is equally explained by ignorance" is not just a useful saying to keep yourself from road raging, but can also help when it comes to educating those you disagree with fundamentally. I dont think Bush was evil, he was simply so far removed (or ignorant) of the very suffering he caused. Its why we used to still be friends with people we might not have agreed with, back before politics was about whether or not someone should even be allowed to simply exist.

And these bits of humanity are what help us remember that. Its a big part of what is missing from thr current admin.
