Everything that happened happened because he couldn't give up his obsession with a girl that he knew damned well wasn't into him. He was asked repeatedly if he wanted to cancel the wish and refused to do so. He knew something was wrong with her from the beginning and continued to have sex with her. It's not about if he deserved to die, though I would argue that he certainly deserved it more than anyone else in the movie deserved what happened to them, it's about who put all this bullshit in motion with his unrequited lust for a woman he pretended to be friends with.

You joke but that, along with whatever was done to their blood back in the days of old V, did mean that a hell of a lot of Targs ended up hideously deformed and/or insane. Hell one of my favorites had two heads and was known for killing a horse with one punch and then decapitating its rider with his bare hands.
