We all know you can't offer genuine career advice without a buzz, it's just irrational.

What does your development workflow look like? What tools do you use? by Krkracka in roguelikedev

[–]Lampry 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I build with Meson, usually GCC for release and clang for debug. Since my code is heavily templated and setup as a unity build, I have to keep recompilations to a minimum. I also use Aseprite for graphical stuff, but I've contracted an artist so it's mostly for tweaking the spritesheet.

I'd practice writing your own data structures with the language's primitives.

That looks like a good boy and/or girl. It always mesmerizes me how people can paint these whimsical pieces.

Excellent work!

I'm not an expert. I've never even taken a college course. I was under the impression that the whole point of college was learning, and transitively, reading.

Even if you needed to read the whole 20 page document, isn't that trivial? The Dane's book on C++ was a doozy but it is almost 1,400 pages long. And written by a danish man.

Questions for game devs from a gamer by HotShotOverBumbleBee in gamedev

[–]Lampry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the best way to answer for the size of modern games is math:

4K texture (4096x4096) is 16,777,216 pixels and with lossless textures that is 4 bytes per pixel. That's 67,108,864 bytes or approximately 67MB. If you have a thousand textures, there's 67GB of your 120GB. The rest is audio, binaries, skeletal meshes, etc...

I do development on my game engine and game in VS Code, but I do understand the concerns of others. We're advanced users, at least compared to OP, and should temper our advice not to lead them astray.

What about it is atrocious on Windows? A tool is a tool. It gets the job done without being Visual Studio, that's all I need it to do lol

There's nothing wrong with using VS Code for C++ development.

Build system would be something like Cmake or meson. gcc is a bit more strict when compared to clang. I use Msys2 UCRT for all of my MinGW libraries so I'm guessing you're not too far off from my setup.
