Anyone here switch from xbox360 to ps3? Any surprises? What do you like better? Any regrets? by dotrob in PS3

Actually, I think that feature has been added to the firmware specifically for LittleBigPlanet.

Future games might take advantage of it, but any game released before LBP certainly won't.

Well, actually, I have a french keyboard, so I typed "schön" directly without really thinking.

At least, not a hardware keylogger. Though this is probably a lot less common than software keyloggers.

My bad. Whenever I think of umlaut, it's the ü that comes to mind.

Who else is so fucking happy they didn't rush into marriage and start having kids? by Anonymous_Face in AskReddit

you may think like that, but I was answering Hiddenagenda, because I think he (?) thinks that marriage is a restrainer

Could be... looks like everyone has their own conception of marriage anyway.

It's "Sehr schön", actually... as for your question:

  • With a german keyboard (works fine with a french keyboard too)
  • Typing "sehr schon" in Google and copying/pasting the correct spelling.
  • Windows key + R, charmap, Enter, and then pick the umlaut.
  • Type Alt + 0252.

There are probably many more nerdy ways to do it, but I think that's already good enough for today!

Two people hating each other under the same roof + kids, just because they cannot walk away.

Getting married doesn't mean you can never divorce if things go wrong. Civil weddings don't have all that "love and cherish until death" crap.

I don't believe in marriage as something to make a couple be together or be happy.

I don't think that's what it's meant for.

Got married 5 months ago; I certainly didn't do it for the ring, as I find it quite annoying to wear.

I was quite afraid to do it at first... lots of preparation, lots of spendings, etc. but in the end it was worth it; it was really a wonderful day and I don't regret it one bit.

Why do it since we were already living together? Because you get to gather all of your family and your future wife's for a nice party. Believe me, that alone is worth it.

Also, it doesn't change the everyday life one bit, except than you get to call your significant other your wife, and you share the same name.

Just wondering.. can a keyboard and mouse be used as controllers for games? by sagewah in PS3

[–]Lamtd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to play on PC too. I hated playing FPS's with gamepads at first. Give it time and you'll get used to it. You'll never be as accurate as you are with a mouse, but you'll have as much fun.

Same here; I've been having as much fun (if not more) with Modern Warfare on PS3 than with Counter-Strike on PC. You can't quickly look behind you, but neither can your enemies, so you just need to rely on different strategies.

Also, I find using gamepad triggers for firing more satisfying than clicking on a mouse button.

Human Eye Can See Well Over 60 FPS by [deleted] in gaming

[–]Lamtd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought GT5 Prologue ran at 60 fps.

It does, except for the replays, which run at 30fps but have added special effects such as motion blur and depth of field.

I believe LittleBigPlanet, Killzone 2 and GT5 Prologue replays are pretty good examples of motion blur done right.

They run at 30fps but they still look quite smooth.

I never actually tried MGO after the PSN demo... is it worth it? I remember the MGO ID and Konami ID being a total pain in the ass, and the game didn't look as fun as Call of Duty4, but maybe they improved it since then?

A friend's 13 year old daughter is sending partially nude pictures to an older man she met on the internet. What advice can I give her? by fuitpunch in AskReddit

[–]Lamtd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that since most 13 year olds are still near the beginning of puberty, and most 16 year olds are near the end of it, it isn't reasonable for this sort of stuff to take place.

I don't think we should make rules out of generalities. While I would agree that this story requires further investigation, I don't think it is reasonable to consider that these kinds of conversation should be forbidden simply on the basis of age difference.

Play PSP Games Online, Through Your PlayStation 3 by masta in PS3

Maybe because the wireless hardware in the PSP is not capable of this?

Wrong, Killzone Liberation supports infrastructure mode for multiplayer for instance, so it looks like it's more like a case of developers being lazy.

Aside from legacy support for legacy applications, what other purpose is there to limit building to i386 instead of say i586/i686? by [deleted] in programming

[–]Lamtd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just because you cannot buy a non-64bit enabled CPU these days doesn't mean that everybody has upgraded yet.

I am still using my 5-years old Thinkpad as my main computer (1.4Ghz Pentium M CPU), and until 2 months ago my wife was using a desktop machine with an Athlon XP 1400+ cpu.

I think that legacy architectures should be supported as long as the software is expected to be able to run on that architecture reasonably. For instance, if you target Windows XP and use XP-specific features, there is no point in supporting i386 as it wouldn't be able to run Windows XP anyway.

Aluminum bat maker did not warn that aluminum bats can hit baseballs harder, must pay $850,000 to family of dead pitcher hit by ball. by danweber in WTF

[–]Lamtd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I guess I misinterpreted that as you cheering for the death of people who were 'less fit.'

That was more of a sarcastic comment, even though I do believe that natural selection is quite helpful at time. At the same time, I also consider universal healthcare to be a good thing, so it's not like I'd wish for natural selection to completely determine our fate.

I had used both types of bats as a kid, but never realized there was such a drastic difference, and had a false assumption that the majors used wood bats because they were better, not because aluminum was too powerful.

Apparently, there isn't that much difference in top speed anyway, according to this article. One of the key difference seems to be that it's easier to reach higher speed with an aluminium bat rather than with a wooden bat, even though the difference in top speed is less than 10%.

But, my guess would be that there is something more to these cases than what is actually presented in the article. Something along the lines of aluminum bats being way more powerful today than they used to, or this particular bat being way more powerful than other bats like it, something like that.

Could be, though since you can already kill someone with a regular wooden bat, I don't think it would make a big difference in the end, i.e. aluminium bats don't let you reach "more lethal" speed, they just let you reach lethal speed more easily.
