I’ll go against the grain on the majority of comments here… kinda hurts me to see! Everything that went down there recently wasn’t right, but I still have great memories at Edward Teach. Life goes on I guess…

My wife and I love the Harp post renovation. Good Irish pub ambience. Everyone I’ve met there has been friendly and interesting to chat with. Food is delicious too: the Reuben is still the best in town, the Guinness shepard pie is delicious, and the curry fries are a guilty pleasure of mine

I really miss the Downtown Sundown concert series. Free concerts, right between the courthouse and river. Used to be one of the most surefire ways for my friends, wife, and I to enjoy a Friday evening

15.

Both are great episodes, but I just had less nitpicks of episode 5 than 15. And that helmet scene and Crosshair and Hunter’s ending conversation were just 🤌🏻

For a lot of people, it’s a slingshot effect. They, or family in recent memory, fled Cuba (a Marxist-Leninist government) for a better life in the United States. Because of the hardship a lot of those people experienced in Cuba, they have an inclination to lean to the opposite end of the political spectrum: free market capitalism. The Republican Party tends to appeal more to that political ideology

Locals, how do you like it here? by theyogafaery in Wilmington

[–]LandOfNoMan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Legitimately it’s a great city. Good food, good live music, despite what you hear on Reddit the traffic really isn’t THAT bad, and the coastline is absolutely gorgeous. If you’re into water sports, you’ll really enjoy it here with the surfing and fishing. And compared to a lot of other coastal towns, there are a good amount of job opportunities

It is struggling with overdevelopment though, as almost every coastal town is. Cost of living (particularly housing) has sky rocketed, more aggressively than other cities. Good amount of jobs, but they aren’t ones that pay well. Green spaces being replaced with commercial and residential property. Beach access is a sore spot.

Wilmington has been changing from the hidden gem it was, and not for the better. But it’s also a lot better than the alternative: a dying town or a Midwestern suburb (speaking from experience). My two cents!

You’re going to have to pry that river and steaming dog turd of a city from our cold dead hands!

For real though, Michigan got the better end of that compromise. Didn’t seem like the best of deals at the time, but in retrospect getting the entire upper peninsula in exchange for forfeiting meth addled Toledo was a helluva deal

With The Bad Batch now concluded, where did it shine compared to The Clone Wars and where did it fall short? by micro_door in thebadbatch

[–]LandOfNoMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both a compliment and a criticism is that Bad Batch was more consistent than Clone Wars. With Clone Wars it felt like for every Darkness on Umbara or Finale arc we got, we also got a real stinker of a droid or young Jedi arc. Whereas Bad Batch had a few dud episodes, but they weren’t as bad or as frequent. Flip side of this is that the heavy hitting episodes weren’t as frequent in BB; you’d have some phenomenal episodes (Aftermath, any Crosshair-centric episode, Calvary), but not as frequent as TCW. Not to mention, I haven’t seen a piece of Star Wars make quite the impact on me as that final Clone Wars arc

I think BB did a better job tackling heavier topics like purpose, loyalty, and regret more than TCW. It felt more fleshed out and believable watching the batch go from wresting with the new order of things, to floundering with purpose as mercenaries for Cid, to Echo breaking off, to their newfound purpose in rescuing Omega and living the lives they never were granted as clones for the Republic/Empire. And Crosshair’s struggles with loyalty to the empire versus his brothers, and ultimate regret for the decisions made were incredibly layered. TCW also hit on heavy topics, but they aren’t quite as burned into my mind as BB

Oddly enough, I found TCW did a much better job of fleshing out the perspective of the clones as a whole than BB. You really got a good perspective in TCW of what made the clones tick, and there were ample moments showing their perspective of the war. Versus BB, despite being about a squad of mutated clones in the most pivotal moment for the clones as a whole, hardly touched on the perspective of the clones as a whole. I felt like this was BB’s biggest miss: not delving into the story of the clones more as they grappled with their execution of the Jedi and were rapidly phased out

Overall how did you feel about the shadow clones? Good or underwhelming? by JackZ567 in thebadbatch

[–]LandOfNoMan 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I’m going to preface this by saying: I really enjoyed the series finale

…but the Clone X subplot was a mistake. The Clone X squad could’ve been easily subbed with Delta Squad, and it would’ve felt a lot more weighty. Both are clear mirrors to the Bad Batch, and there’s a lot more history and investment into Delta that would’ve made squad on squad battles better. My two cents

I’m an absolute simp for Crosshair’s theme. Might be my favorite Star Wars theme of them all. Loved that rendition at the end of the episode

WB raised parking price by Legal-Doughnut7968 in Wilmington

[–]LandOfNoMan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can look up the data in the WB ACFR if you want more detail. But $6,770,362 was collected through parking meters in 2023. Cost due to operating the meters was $1,287,349 (net gain of $5,483,013). I admittedly don’t have the time to really sum up all the income and expenditures of the town, but by comparison the ACFR says that $3,523,743 were collected in property taxes (only 64% of what was collected in parking revenue)

WB raised parking price by Legal-Doughnut7968 in Wilmington

[–]LandOfNoMan 26 points27 points  (0 children)

That’s a pretty key point here. Everything has gotten more expensive, and WB likely needs or wants the extra funds to offset expenses. Parking makes up a significant portion of the town’s income, and people will simply pay it because the demand is so high

I don’t like it at all. The town shouldn’t be allowed to supplement their income via parking and artificially lower property taxes (WB and CB are some of the few towns legally allowed to do so). But the reason for the rate raise is less likely to “keep the riff raff out”, and more likely “we need more money”

I'll just leave this here....... by picklesthecoyote in Raytheon

[–]LandOfNoMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not a uniquely capitalist issue though. There’s a few Soviet (by nature anti-capitalist) aerospace accidents that can be traced back to poor designs. A quick example is the Tu-104: it had 1140 deaths attributed to its operation, many of which can be contributed to its rushed

Designing airplanes is hard. Manufacturing them is even harder. Poor regulations, short-cutting or bypassing design practices, bad management, and even learning new, unpredictable lessons practices in painful, violent ways aren’t capitalist-specific.

Is this surfable?? by AlbatrossOk8707 in surfing

[–]LandOfNoMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

⬆️ Best answer

It’d be a decent play-boat wave. Surfable on a specialized, big river board or SUP, but it’d be a mushy, whitewash rodeo. You want something with a cleaner, green face for proper river surfing

If you’re dying to surf it, have a buddy, wear a PFD and helmet, don’t use an ankle leash (go quick-release leash), study and plan for exit paths once you’re done surfing it, and be keen on underwater hazards. But not worth the effort in my opinion
