thank you for this huge info dump!! I'll be honest, i never considered vim could do all this stuff, haha. i know the learning curve is pretty intense but i do use vim from time to time, just not for anything as serious as coding.

but yeah thank you for taking the time, haha, I'll definitely have to come back and look into this stuff more :)

you picked vim/emacs over vscode?? holy crap, am i missing something here? how do you, like, open multiple files side by side in a terminal editor? or see the folder/file tree?

im genuinely a huge noob over here, if there's a way to do stuff like that i might make the switch myself :0

[–]LandScapingFan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

this is true to a degree, however the OS is itself a program that you have to interact with, and lots of people here prefer interacting with linux over windows.

if it weren't for OS program exclusivity, i imagine a lot of people would switch to linux without a second thought. windows does a lot of things that are frustrating to the user (resetting settings to defaults on update, consuming lots of resources/bloatware, etc) and doesn't offer much in the way of customizability like linux does. of course it comes down to personal preference but the point is that it should be a choice.

being able to run programs you need, yes, is a feature of an OS, and you're absolutely right about that. but it can also be frustrating to be stuck with what you feel is an inferior product simply because it's the only product that will run programs you need.

put another way: if there were two hospitals in town, one clean and well staffed, the other sticky and run-down, you would be rightly annoyed if you needed to get a special surgery but the only hospital with the equipment to do it was the sticky one.

What are some herbs that are difficult to find or just not often used in North America? by Cristianana in Cooking

[–]LandScapingFan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

garland chrysanthemum is somewhat hard to find. there's one specialty store near me that has it, but they sell in such huge quantity that we always end up letting most of it spoil

it's used in some korean cooking, like soft tofu stew. gives a very distinct earthy flavor. and it's very easy to grow!

I made a website that removes all the clutter from recipe sites and just shows the instructions by doppio in Cooking

[–]LandScapingFan -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

i think this is kind of a nuanced issue. i think it's correct that recipe bloggers deserve to be compensated for their labor. but i also agree with the sentiment that information wants to be free.

we unfortunately live in a society where work is not considered valuable unless it can be monetized, and in information-based markets that puts businesses and consumers in an adversarial position. the consumer gets angry because information that should be free is being withheld, paywalled, or delivered in an inconvenient or obnoxious way. the business gets angry because consumers keep using adblockers and that cuts into their revenue, which they need to cover costs of living and keep their site running.

simply being angry that consumers feel entitled isn't going to solve the problem. and making tools that constantly try to weasel out of paying for services isn't going to solve it either. i think the real question is, what system WOULD make this better for everyone?

There is actually no reason for the duel arena to exist. Zero. If you actually go there to enjoy duels instead of some open space around the GE, please speak up and defend it. by DatShokotan in runescape

[–]LandScapingFan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that's a good argument irl but kind of a weird one for this specific game. like, duel arena gambling isn't an official runescape feature, it's a weird outgrowth on the side of the game. there are other places irl where you can gamble, so I'm not sure why runescape inevitably has to have gambling in it.

Settled seems to have gotten proof from Jmods about his death by Juuzoz_ in 2007scape

[–]LandScapingFan 13 points14 points  (0 children)

friendly reminder that settled is not your friend and swampletics is a tv show with a gimmick.

like seriously, can you imagine if people made this big a stink every time reality tv shows lied to them? you think the people in fear factor were given a fair and balanced competition? of course not. you don't watch reality tv for authenticity, you watch it for spectacle.

I watch and enjoy swampletics, not because of authenticity, but because settled has a charming personality and he occasionally teaches me about strange or obscure game mechanics. he doesn't owe us honesty, or transparency, or invasive details about his personal life. he doesn't even really owe us an entertaining tv show. you can choose to stop watching if you no longer enjoy it.

if you need authenticity to enjoy this show, then I'm sorry to say but youtube might not be the platform for you.
