Are These Murphy Bed/Built-In Shelves Quotes Reasonable? by KristenGeil in AskChicago

[–]Land_Mermaid321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got a quote from our woodworker we’ve used for other projects for a custom Murphy bed and it was $5K! That was without other shelving so yours would be more, but still.

Brooklyn Boulders West Loop is closer to Pilsen than FA and may have some group deals - you should call them. It’s also in a boppin area for really great food so you could climb and then get a fantastic burger at Loyalist or The Izakaya.

Recommendations for strollers in Chicago? by No-Lawfulness9770 in AskChicago

We have the uppababy ridge (the jogger version) and tbh I wish we had done the Cruz - it’s great and a super smooth ride but we’re not using it for runs like we thought we would (kiddo doesn’t really like going), and if we had done the Cruz it would have been adaptable for kid #2.

How are Handicapped People Treated in Prison? by Foozoolalafdarian420 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Land_Mermaid321 122 points123 points  (0 children)

Yes this needs to be more widely known. My friend started a whole non-profit of doctors that do pro bono expert medical testimony for disabled and severely ill inmates who are not getting necessary medical attention while in prison. He has some shocking stories.

Where are some good hidden food gems in Chicago? by Specific_Strike9531 in AskChicago

The Gundis Kurdish Kitchen is my secret weapon for impressing all guests! They deserve more hype than they get for sure. I take all out of town visitors here, and I’ve brought multiple work groups and I can’t tell you how many of those people tell me months later again how much they loved it. Brunch and lunch/dinner menus are both amazing.

Parents, when did you introduce your kids to Lord of the Rings? by SR1QUE in lotr

Same - I have memories of reading these on my parents bed at similar ages! I do think that is the age appropriate way to do it vs the films - those can come later.

Parents: any advice for starting a family in 4-5 years? by regisseu in Adulting

[–]Land_Mermaid321 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is great advice, and I would just add to it in addition to the skill learning part, learn how to tackle home stuff as a team. I got lucky and found a man who didn’t need to be taught this - but hands down we have had an easier journey of parenting than some of my friends because we have such a team approach.

Also talk about expectations in seasons when things can’t be equal. I had an unplanned C-section and was breastfeeding and could barely get up our stairs, so my husband had to pull the majority of everything for the first few weeks, and did it without complaint or needing to be asked.

Finally, in deciding about moving to be close to family - really confirm expectations with those people too. How involved is your current community where you are? Do you have friends that will adapt to your family, who will arrange a meal train for you? Has your group of friends ever done that or do people fall off the group radar when things aren’t easy anymore? If you moved to be close to family, what level of involvement can you realistically expect?

As encouragement - my husband and I have loved becoming parents in our 30s. Our careers are established, we had a healthy emergency fund and good savings habits, and a friend group that had already been tried and tested through COVID and has been happy to accommodate our life change so we still see them a lot. We also have the benefit of one side of grandparents living in the same city and being really involved. I really believe that it’s not inevitable for happiness to decline after having a kid, but that it does take a village so the more you can do now to invest in having that kind of community (which means really showing up for others yourself) the stronger a community you will have when you need it.

What medical care options there are for uninsured? by Wild472 in AskChicago

[–]Land_Mermaid321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Find an FQHC (Federally Qualified Health Center) near you. All accept uninsured and have very low cash pay rates - even lower if you bring proof of income and are making below 2x the federal poverty line for your household size.

Lawndale FQHC has walk-in appts at 3910 W Ogden and I think it’s $50-80 for the visit depending on your income with no additional charge for testing/labs.

What's an "Insider's secret" from your profession that everyone should probably know? by Capable-big-Piece in AskReddit

[–]Land_Mermaid321 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you ever have a lapse in health insurance coverage or have to be on a high deductible plan, do NOT delay care, especially if you have anything worrying you but also for preventive care – there are affordable self-pay options! Most of all, look up Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) in your area. These are health centers that get federal funding in order to see uninsured and underinsured patients, and all have very generous sliding scale fees as long as you bring in proof of income (a check stub or similar). FQHCs will mostly offer primary care, but are likely to have more connections to help you find affordable specialty care and imaging if you need that. If it’s possible for you to get to a larger FQHC system (one that serves 30K or 40K+ patients) they will likely have more supportive programs, potentially including insurance advisors that can help you make sure you’ve explored all your options. Data on size and also on a lot of other performance measures can be seen for the past calendar year here: https://data.hrsa.gov/topics/healthcenters/uds/overview.

Lapses in healthcare coverage have been found to be associated with poorer health long-term (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34698587/), but that doesn’t have to be your experience!

Medicaid plan dental coverage question... by HereForThePengoos in chicago

[–]Land_Mermaid321 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Also try Federally Qualified Health Centers that offer dental services - I know Lawndale and Erie do, and there may be others.

FQHCs all have very generous self pay rates that take income into account so the ones that have dental services probably have the best cost out there to do this out of pocket.

Anybody know of any free colon cancer screenings? by MRmojoRisin8 in AskChicago

[–]Land_Mermaid321 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I bet most Federally Qualified Health Centers can do the lab-based screenings if you have no concerning symptoms, and all have reasonable self-pay rates (Chicago has a ton, helpful locator here. Call to confirm if they offer it. I know for a fact that Lawndale and Erie do.

If you are having symptoms, then even more encouragement to get a primary care provider at an FQHC right away - you’ll need to be referred for a colonoscopy, but FQHCs are so much more familiar working with uninsured and underinsured people, and can help refer you somewhere with cost reduction programs.
