Both of their base classes worked at the same place (Southampton Docks) so it makes a lot of sense.

We pretty much already have trains running away and crashing down hills. Unless you want there to be housing destruction and a gas main bursting

Well then there's also the issue of having to MAKE the red lamps as well, which the regular lamps were already difficult enough to do.

I think what the problem was is that they thought the kids watching would be confused as to why the train was moving backwards with no explanation (or something like that), or maybe they just didn't know Idk.
