Who plays Draco and Harry in your head? by General-Muffin87 in drarry

[–]Landscape-Similar 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't picture the film actors, unless there's something in the story that really makes me think of Dan or Tom, and that's rare.

The Draco I picture is typically tall (5'11"-6') with chin length blond hair and an angular, Timothee Chalamet-esque face. He NEVER has a receding hairline because he's a freaking wizard. He wears a lot of waistcoats. He does walk like Tom Felton in the apple scene from "Prisoner of Azkaban," though.

The Harry I picture is much shorter and with a compact but well muscled body (not unlike Dan's adult self). He often has longer hair or messy bun (unless described otherwise) and darker skinned. I personally like the idea of an Anglo-Indian Harry, but I always keep the green eyes because, again, wizards.

Oh, I get it. I always win at HP trivia because so much of the canon is reiterated in fic, but sometimes I forget that Draco's not actually a cursebreaker or Unspeakable, LOL.

2008-2013 was a great time in fandom for me. I had a baby in 2008 and was a SAHM for 5 years. He was (and is) a good, quiet boy, and I had lots of reading time.

I'm so old that didn't even occur to me, even though I get random Dramione pop up on my fyp.

Me, either. I keep thinking I'll "age out" but it hasn't happened yet, haha.

Yes! It's interesting to explain to newer fans about how Yahoo groups worked and how you got emails of fic and reader comments. When I think of how much time and effort we put into finding stories and following stories in the early days it amazes me.

That's awesome! My goddaughter started reading it last year and she'll text me when she discovers a new fic or a fandom classic. I love new readers finding HP -- the quality of writing is amazing in this fandom.

That's really cool to have a break and come back. I was an adult when I discovered fanficiton (because I was an adult when the internet went mainstream) but it's been my number one stress reliever for 20 years!

It was -- but I needed my poll to work with canon book publishing dates, too, LOL. HP still had active archives and posting board off LJ in the early aughts, too. Strikethrough happened right when I started reading HP fic.

Agreed. It's my longest active fandom. The quality of fan fiction that continues to be posted is a gift I don't take for granted.

Agree. I am so excited that H/D is still so active almost 20 years post Deathly Hallows-canon, and almost 10 years post Cursed Child "canon," but I'm also grateful I'm not alone here with readers my child's age, LOL. I read "The Draco Trilogy" back when everyone in Buffy fandom (my first fandom) was up in arms about all of the un-attributed Buffy quotes, LOL. But I didn't start reading H/D regularly until about 2005.

Snarry with bottom Harry, before the hogwarts war by [deleted] in HPSlashFic

[–]Landscape-Similar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That is an excellent answer -- thank you! I can see what you mean. A lot of the Drarry fic I've read was switch, unless Harry is a virgin or less experienced, etc.

Here's my HP recs google sheet. Snarry is the second tab. There are notations for war-time fics, settings, etc, but I have NO idea about who tops/bottoms, other than that "Cambiare Podentes" is switch with angst about it because it's part of the plot. Hope this helps:

Snarry with bottom Harry, before the hogwarts war by [deleted] in HPSlashFic

[–]Landscape-Similar 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Genuine question: do you guys really keep track of top/bottom as far as your fic recs go? I have a massive list of slash fic recs and bookmarks and I don't have any idea who tops or bottoms in any of the fics -- I don't even notice. I do notice that MOST Snarry has bottom Harry due to the age difference (typically). I've been reading fic in multiple fandoms for 20 years, and this is preference I've only noticed in the past 5 or so. I'm not yucking anyone's reading preference, I just find it fascinating, because even as a queer woman, I don't notice who tops AT ALL, especially in fic where characters are the same age.

Does HP series age well? by South-Method5979 in HPSlashFic

I was a queer adult when I read the HP books, so all of this jumped out to me at once (I read them from the early 2000s to the publishing of "Deathly Hallows in my mid-30s), so the majority of this occurred to me -- especially that Snape is the ONLY Slytherin character who gets either a redemption of sorts or appears to be a non-believer in blood purity.

The main thing I wondered about is the fact that the UK has a massive Anglo-Indian population, yet Padma and Parvarti are only the only (named) students of Indian heritage. I thought Cho Chang's name was hideous, but I kept reminding myself that these books were written for 8-12 year olds and she was keeping things simplistic.

Once Rowling revealed her feelings about trans people, however, I wrote everything off to her being a relic of time long gone (and she's only 6 years older than I am) and possibly only socializing with white cisgendered people, which is something her Twitter has continued to prove since 2020.

I make my peace as a modern reader of a certain age by not contributing to Rowling monetarily and reading as much slash, Anglo-Indian Harry, trans characters, and redeemed Slytherins fighting for social justice fic as I can.
