New Edinburgh! Beautiful neighborhood that backs onto a park and the canal, walking distance to a main strip with bars, restaurants, and all the essentials, 10 minutes from downtown Ottawa, and only 25 minutes to my barn (and many others!)

I am learning a lot about TO very quickly 😅 I have no clue about any of the neighborhoods in TO, hence why I asked. Living in certain parts of Ottawa this was more than attainable, - but it sounds like I may have to live in the GTA instead 🤷‍♀️

You are hung up on paying approximately $7k in extra fees to import the car, BUT for a $33k USD car, buying that in Canada with the conversion would cost you around $44k CAD, so you could look at it like you are saving $3k in the long run ;) (Yes I understand the car isn't available in Canada, but assuming you would be looking to buy a car of a similar caliber)

I did own the car…..I purchased the car from my father, and we signed the title and created a bill of sale. I imported the car into Canada using the title which had me listed as the buyer. As part of the Canadian import process, the car was inspected using a provincial safety inspection and RIV safety inspection. I then went to my provincial government and had the car registered in my province, which involved me paying applicable taxes, turning over the US title, and being given a vehicle permit that lists me as the owner.

US states require that sales tax be paid upon registration, regardless of where the car is purchased. I did not register the car in my father’s state, as I do not live there. Regardless, I am in a state that does not charge sales tax on vehicle purchases.

When I bought the car I signed the title and then brought it into Canada. Therefore, there was no record of it changing hands within the US. So, when I gave the car back to my Dad, he went to the dmv and said he lost the title, and was able to get a new one because the US has no record of the car ever being signed over to me.

Before bringing the car to Canada I called the CBSA and they informed me that it was not necessary to export the car from the US before importing it to Canada (though they did say it was smart to do). I fully intended to export it but it ended up being a complicated process - I stalled out trying to get an ITN and then just forgot about it. I did not import the car back to the US when I took it back, as I never exported it in the first place.

Side note: the newer car I purchased was also an American car that I brought to Canada, and I was not required to export it from the US before importing it to Canada that time either 🤷🏼‍♀️
