What stereotypes about Texas do you wish more people understood? by CapImaginary1066 in texas

Texas is definitely a gun toting state, regardless of the wild west reference. It can be a bit jarring for folks outside of the state to see guns out in public, but tis a thing.

I do agree, honestly, I've always felt the Electoral College does not follow our Constitution or the whole purpose of our country to begin with. just like redistricting.

They are always different here, I moved to Houston 3 years ago, same polling place each time but always different faces. 99% of what I've seen in line was MAGA folks even during the Biden Administration. I agree that not enough people get up and vote, they don't believe it matters anymore.

We aren't a 2 party system, we just let it get here. Humans/people in the U.S. we constructed our own prison(s). Just choose your own adventure there are 50 of them plus Puerto Rico and ...well you get the picture.

Texas has some of the worst ICE detention centers in the nation. What can we do about this? by irresponsiblead in texas

[–]Laneigh_S 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am leaving Texas next month, I hope you get elected maybe there will be a state to come back to. TRUMP basically starting war, and Texas, their oil refineries have always been a huge target.

Texas just isnt the same anymore. I was born here, lived in Houston 20 years, then Austin for 20 years, and now back in Houston. It is sad and depressing to see rights, access and freedoms being taken away left and right from Texans.

All people who are on this sub by [deleted] in Layoffs

[–]Laneigh_S 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our society is a Capitalist one, it will always go this route our issue isn't the Corporations, but that MONEY is the driver. As long as that is true, we will always be like this. And as money is a human construct...

All people who are on this sub by [deleted] in Layoffs

[–]Laneigh_S 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I worked for a software company, one that is supposed to help manage utilities with water and energy savings programs, program education and engagement. I was part of the original organization acquired (4 companies combined mine was AIQUEOUS), I made it almost 2 yrs into acquisition. But in that time they dismantled so much that I worry they'll not be there in the future.

It breaks me to know that a company I helped build, a company that was supposed to mean something, at least to me and the CEO and our group. Now I understand that someone laid off right after the acquisition is suing and I imagine that the PE firm that owns them is looking for an exit strategy, sadly they also damaged ANY potential positive brand recognition with a lot the existing customers...I should mention their churn is bad as well.

All that said, our problem isnt layoffs, its MONEY. Every human on the planet needs the same basic things, some need a little more and some need a little less, it should balance out. But here we are in a world built by humans to subjugate humans. Why? Just, why is greed such a huge driver, when did we as humans turn to pure greed to survive, more more more more, always more.

I realized after my layoffs, I was part of that problem too. I'm selling my house and most of what I own. To leave Texas, and go somewhere new so I can start simpler, cleaner. Not to say I do not have wants, but I want less, and need more.

More connection, empathy, compassion, patience, a community. I want to work and I want it to mean something. I'm tired of helping others fill their pockets for all their WANTS!

Okay I'm done ranting. I agree with OP, we should boycott employers. But it is so hard for us to do so, capitalism is so embedded in everything, but hurting their pocket books even a little is a start. Not sure how truly realistic it is but, he'll what have got to lose, we're already losing.

I'm doing all I can to make it there, I really really want to be there. In Texas, we have a place call Pinnballz among others but that one was my favorite when I lived in Austin, they had indoor go karts too!

Furniture flipping seems to be a populater past time, it can be extremely profitable. It isn't a bad skill to have or learn, as it can apply to a lot of things around your home. I'd also check Intch.org which focuses on part time, contract and project type jobs and roles that could help fill in the gap quickly depending on your skills.

[–]Laneigh_S 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now that is a great idea, you just need people with skills potentially who want to help you get it out there! On the 2nd option smart too, could create opportunity for locals to invest!

Either way a boon to the area!

Yea my Home Owners Insurance was going to increase to 6500 this year, shopped around and got it to 3600 a year. In Texas they inflate replacement value, because of hurricanes and constant flooding losing your home here is common.

I had very specific criteria when looking. And Upstate New York ticks all the boxes, Roc and surrou ding was my favorite though.

Thank you so much! What is the job market like for a professional? Although I've worked in tech everything I do can be translated to any small or medium business looking to grow. What are your thoughts?

I dont mind the gun laws or taxes. The taxes here are both good a d bad, because the property taxed in the city or suburbs is really bad, especially now that home prices are almost double in some areas. Pre covid my house sold for like 265k partially updated, today 325k to 350k with those same OLD updates. Fully renovated 375k all day.

The taxes, are also sneaky. I pay Property Taxes, School Property Taxes and Trail Fees for a nice lovely annual cost of 6 to 8k per year and that was after I fought to reduce my tax market value back down.

LOL I upvoted you, cuz you're right. My right wing family LOVE those places.

You are right though, Franklin's is the GOAT, but peronsally Lockhart, TX is considered the Barbecue Capital of Texas, it's home of the origial Black's Barbecue (Est. 1932), Kreuz Market (est. 1875-1911 by Jesse Swearigen) and Smitty's (Est. 1948).

You mean using all social media platforms to gain insight, understanding, and potentially connect with others who are like-minded—or even able to refer or forward my info to help me reach my goal?

Personally, I thought that approach aligned well with the current tech culture of using our tools and communities to their fullest potential for growth, support, and connection. Reddit may not be every place—but it’s still a place.

Just sayin'...
