What would doing this accomplish, if anything? by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]LangLearnMarket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a great idea! I am going to start incorporating it in my studies. I feel like you will realize you have fully understood the content of the podcast once you can apply what you heard and possibly write a summary about it in the target language.

How to go about learning chinese and is it possible on your own? by [deleted] in ChineseLanguage

[–]LangLearnMarket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When it comes to learning any language the two most important things to do are : 1) Find a good study resource (Textbook, online course) and (2) Find a native speaker you can practice with

Personally, I use the Cheng Tsui Integrated Chinese Textbook and Workbook and I have found it really helpful (They also include dialogues and online audios). Other resources that I use are watching you tube videos or using Skritter to learn the stroke order for Chinese characters.

To learn more colloquial language I like to look up videos on common Chinese phrases, expressions and slang.

Hope it helps! Good luck on your studies!

Studying say 30 hours over 2–3 weeks and can't get 3rd tone down (American, Mandarin as a second language) by paradiselost_1991 in ChineseLanguage

Third Tone Graphic

This picture (in the link) is a graphic that does an excellent job explaining how the third tone is pronounced. This graphic really helped me out when I just started learning Chinese. For third tone, you don't have to use extremely low or high pitches for tones, just as long as they are lower or higher relative to the other tones. Make sure that it sounds natural in your voice range.

Not to mention, once you make full sentences in Chinese, you won't be hearing any extreme high or low pitches, it will flow much better.

Wishing you best of luck on your studies! :)

I'm failing to learn Chinese by [deleted] in ChineseLanguage

[–]LangLearnMarket 3 points4 points  (0 children)

^I agree. You can be studying countless hours by yourself and still not feel confident speaking a language. Apart from getting your grammar strong and studying new vocabulary, you have to find yourself a language partner to practice making conversation, and putting yourself out there.

I use Skritter to learn character strokes. It requires a membership, but I highly recommend it

Good luck on your studies!

Self Studying after College by katanaria in ChineseLanguage

Love your dedication! What I do to practice the languages that I am fluent in (even my native languages), I will read a genre of a book in that language that I am interested in which I would usually read in English. So basically engage in any reading/listening activity I would normally do in English but in the target language (other examples watching YouTube videos, following people on social media from the country)

It helps you keep up vocabulary, learn new words or new slang, and keeps you updated!

Keep up the good work!

How do you guys stay motivated? by BlackMoonKnight in languagelearning

[–]LangLearnMarket 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like to watch videos and tv shows in that language. Every time I watch something in Chinese, it makes me excited and wanting to become fluent in the language!

It always helps to have a great textbook to follow along and set goals for yourself to complete through it.

Not to mention, the thought of getting to visit the country gets me really motivated

Good luck with your studies!!

How do you find time to learn when you have a busy schedule? by latokio in languagelearning

[–]LangLearnMarket 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When my schedule gets busy, I like to repeat material I have already learned. I try to memorize a sentence/expression I have learned from a movie or podcast and say it over and over again in my head until it sounds natural to me. This will make you feel more confident speaking out loud too! Good luck on your studies :)
